The fact remains that NO Nigerian Programmer is paid by another company very well ( 12M NGN Net pa) just to program( or even design Programs). In my 10 or so years of working in IT in this country I am yet to see one.

I cant blame these companies, why pay a Nigerian such a figure for a Digital ( non physical) Asset creation when you can pay someone from IIT HALF of that and basically get MIT/Stanford grade quality work. Especially when they appreciate the fact that 99% of the Technical Decision makers in Nigeria are greedy and selfish and borderline technical illiterates.( and we have not even delved into the Legal issues which is also discouraging)

Like everything in Life, programming (value) in Nigeria is based off Demand and supply, and there is too much programmer supply from China and India ( not to mention the US, Australia and Europe) to be training a Nigerian on the difference between O(log n) and O(1).

This makes Programmer demand very low and, in turn, remuneration.

Sad but true.

Widen your reach, think whole of the internet, and the exchange rate makes working outside for people outside Nigeria more lucrative. If you are a programmer with ability and creativity you can canvass people abroad. USA or Europe. Obviously the name of the game is customer services plus a decent portfolio.

If you don't believe that kind of money is possible go to sites like Guru.com and freelancer.com speak to some of the programmers who are canvassing for clients their and people who are looking for programmers to handle projects for them then get back to me.

Remember this is freelance not a monthly salary paying job. each client you receive will be different, you are self employed. Just have a look around the net to see what I am talking about. Then if you doubt you have what it takes to make that kind of money, simply upgrade your skills with a pro online course. The money you spend will be well worth the investment if you are a programmer at heart and the certificate providers are reputable and accredited.

Well! I am a software engineer here in the United Kingdom and just graduated, with a start salary of £30,000 which means after deduction I still go home with £1989 = 900,000N at the time of post. But its so because things are very expansive here. House per month is £1200 at most and a lot of bills which depends on the individual. So for me a developer who is earning 200K in naira still live a posh live compare to us here in the UK. When I was still in Nigeria my House rent for a year was around 250K which means I don't have to worry for the rest 11 months.

Many other skill types would increase your worth, knowledge with modern tools like Docker, kubernetes, Continous integration etc.

Even UX folks who know their meta learn above 200, though front-end coding knowledge would always increase the worth of a UI/UX designer

I did about 4 interviews in some core tech coys (mostly some of our super-startups) and the average salary they offered me was 120 to 130k. Although i consider myself an intermediate programmer and i do mostly web programming (php, JS stack, and small python and java).

I personally don't know why people like hiding their salary or where they work(it's not a must u state it exactly) cos if u visit sites like glassdoor, payscale, indeed and co, u will see d average salary someone with your skill-set earns, but here in 9ja, everyone behaves as if they are working for EFCC or CIA when asked about their salary or work details online! smh. That average of 120 or 130k is roughly $500 usd. Thats very poor for a 30 days full time job. Any good developer can earn that weekly working with foreign firms online.

It's mainly cultural. Nigerians are not as open as onyibos.
In many homes children dont even know how much their parents earn - people they've lived with for decades!!
We're very good at flaunting our wealth though- or creating an unreal impression.
knowing how much one's peers earn can help people bargain better. Or know how what they should be worth.

I see people not stating what they earn. So I work for a startup in Lagos as a mobile (mostly Android using react native) developer. Salary is 386k/m (with lots of other bonuses).

Every new developer in the company earns an average of 180k/m (lowest level). Salary depends on skillset and how much you can sell yourself. Interview is handled by the CTO himself, so he decides how much you earn on the spot, no HR. Work is flexible and most times I work from home. This also gives me more time for side hustles.

I also do remote gigs with an average of $3000/m.

Once you have the right skillset and work smart, you attract the right offers

I agree with you.

True, there are lots of programmers right now, but there are very few programmers with the right skillsets. At least for the past 2 years, I've been in the forefront of recruiting developers for the company I work for and it is sad to admit that 90% of all programmers in Nigeria are shitty. They all shout "I am a developer" but don't have a clue what it takes to be one.

Regardless of the influx of programmer supply from other parts of the world, I've worked with several guys who are smart and very badass in programming and earn more than 12M NGN gross pray and are here in Nigeria.

My point is, companies will pay you if you are good enough, can sell yourself well, be very smart and don't give a shit about burning rickety bridges.

For those reading this thread, Do not be intimidated by the salaries you are hearing or reading.

Everything I write here is applicable globally, but any number you see here is based on Nigerian economics and Nigeria specific

I'm a Software Engineer, and I very much know some numbers out there.
When people come out and tell you that they earn at least N500K/month as a developer, you must learn to see this through a different angle; There's a lot of ego being portrayed online about Salaries. While the reality is that some do earn up to that and more,

A few factors do come into play:
- Irrespective of how good they are, there's a factor of Time and Chance of getting their current Job;
- They are likely to posses a particular skill that fits the needs of that particular company, and are considered mission-critical to the company;
- There's local economics; You don't expect same salary for a company in VI or Ikoyi, Lagos, to pay the same as a Company in Ojota, Lagos

Again, when it comes to earning money as a remote developer, online, its a bit of a different game... the earnings are high because somehow we in Nigeria avoid paying taxes on that, the most popular remote jobs Nigeria's take are Web development, Support Engineering or some form of DevOps...

If you earn N100K/month, do not grumble about the pay, but take more time to build yourself. Specifically in Data Structures and Algorithms, then Systems Design. Find a way to make yourself visible online (participating in Stackoverflow, Hackerrank, Leetcode, or careercup)

and in some months of sucking up frustrations, you are likely to land an interview with fortune 10000 companies and get a job that will skyrocket above the Ego-wielding N500K/monthly earners. (don't think this is possible in 6 months, it takes some time)

Do not compete with those who earn more than you, try and learn from them just in case they know something you don't (a lot have bad ego, be prepared for this);

There will always be people to talk down on your pay anyway;

I cannot mention the company , but I earn 180k per month.

I worked with an ISP company 3weeks after NYSC, was earning 75k per month, Just switch jobs last month now earn 180k.. I am currently 26 years old.. I am an android and IOS developer and my apps have been downloaded by more than 10k users. I hope I have inspired someone out there. cheers
