Even with dress codes stipulated by most companies, guys still find a way to express their sense of fashion without breaching the code. Gone are those generic office wears replaced by stylish ties, designer shoes and the likes. While comfort is encouraged, some people may tend to over do things in the name of fashion or being unique and trendy and as such, cause fashion problems. Here are 4 style setbacks for guys at work

The major problem though is that we may have evolved with regard to our fashion sense but a lot of people (unfortunately mostly HR) are still stuck in old beliefs and values. This poses a problem for guys who want to be ‘hip’. The problems might escalate to the point of costing them a chance at promotion.

Tattoos and piercings

No matter how trendy tattoos and piercings are, they are still frowned upon at work places especially in our country Nigeria. Having visible tattoos is a major turn off for most people who might just happen to be on the HR team. The idea of guys piercing their ears or nose is yet to be fully embraced in the country.

Guys with visible tattoos and piercings are considered indecent. In most cases they are suspected to be touts or criminals which isn’t so but in the corporate world, is an unspoken no-no.

‘Sagging’

How it suddenly became fashionable for guys to lock their trousers below their waist line will forever be a mystery. It’s even more annoying on those ones who wear jeans or trousers that are a size smaller than they are (skinny pants). They now find a way to wear these low waist trousers to work. Sorry to disappoint but most of the people who ‘matter’ at your place of work are not as stylish as you are in that sense would not appreciate it.

It’s called a waistline for a reason. Please make use of it. Don’t leave your ‘behind’ hanging in the open for people to see your designer boxers. Having your shirt tucked in does not make it any better. You may not know this but people are judging you based on your appearance.

Facial hair

You must have noticed by now that every guy has picked up the style of leaving massive facial hair. They’re referred to as the ‘beard gang’. It seems if you haven’t joined the gang yet, you aren’t fashionable. The gang is not for everyone. While I can appreciate it on some guys who go out of their way to keep their beards trim and neat, if you can’t maintain a neat and nice-looking beard please leave the gang for people who can.

Don’t forget that facial hair makes you a lot older than you look. I’m sure you aren’t looking forward to seeing your name on the retirement list anytime soon. Keep your facial hair trim and neat, it makes you look responsible.

Weird haircut

There are so many decent haircut styles out there but of course these guys go for the weird looking ones. Apart from making you look weird, it takes the attention away from your person to your hair. Guys go as far as changing their hair color to awkward colors. Weird haircut styles and brightly dyed hair make you seem irresponsible. It may be classy if you work in the movie or music industry or even as a footballer but for an office environment, you need a decent haircut.

No matter how laid back the company you work for is about dressing, make it your personal mission to always be dressed professionally and decently. Trendy does not necessarily mean good. Maintain high dressing standards if you want to be held in high esteem.

OP not entirely true though
That's why I prefer the marine world
Nobody cares about your dress code and sheet even when you come to the shore office.
While at sea, Put on the damn coverall and head gear

The boys weave their hairs to any style, put on the durag and hard hat and do the goddam job.

Pity guys on suits and tie all day everyday walking the hot streets, not easy at all undecided

That moment when you want to charge your phone at a football viewing centre and you mistakenly unplug the DSTV cable when they about taking a penalty, that's when you will remember what your mom used to tell you that your phone will kill you one day.
