If we are to use the ranking of the last 4 years then Poland shouldn't be in the top 10 neither should Wales be among the top 20s.
True over the past 2 years the only matches we lost was away to Egypt and a home defeat to SA not like we were on a free fall. I still don't get why our draw to Algeria would mean we'd fall down the ranking.
Cameroon ranked above us drew to a Zambian teams that are 30 spaces below them but were not on a free fall.
Fifa shouldn't use an accumulated year to rank but the year in review. From September 2016 till date Nigeria has 5 wins 4 draws and a defeat in the 10 games played.

They maximised their points from the European games which carry more points than African games. Mind you Wales got to the semis of the last Euros.

Baba icon, you hit the nail squarely on the head. I mean, you put it a lot more eloquently than I ever could. Hence, based on your crystal analysis, I think the key is for the NFF to start organizing friendly matches with many of these overrated Euro and South American teams especially in the year preceding the world cup.

I mean, try and organize friendly matches with countries like Poland, Portugal, Peru, etc and see our FIFA ranking jumps before the next world cup. And that might get us a pot 2 or even a pot 1 .... then if the draw favors us, we can stroll thru the world cup and won't play any top top teams until we reach the semi finals. That's one way for us to win the world cup!

I mean, Poland has shown that FIFA ranking can be manipulated.

O pari

Icon4s:

You and I know that if we face Poland in a competitive game it is not likely they defeat us. In fact it is either we beat them or the game ends in a draw.

What a team like Poland benefitted from is playing against teams that are highly ranked.

Get a couple of victories in the WC qualifiers in Europe and you see your points jump. Besides, games involving UEFA and South American teams in WC qualifiers carry more weight than those of Africa and Asia.

Two major setbacks for African teams are:
1. Our results don't carry as much weight as those of Europe and S/America.

2. Most African teams have poor rankings. So if you like beat Cameroon 4-0 and Zambia 6-0. You just make little progress. And worse still if you lose or draw with any of those poorly ranked African teams u see your points come crashing.

By and large I think the major opportunity we have towards having good seeding for the 2022 WC is to perform very well in the 2018 WC.
The WC results carry the heaviest weights of 4points!

If we can beat at least 2 of any of those teams ranked in Pot1 it would really be a good booster for us. And if we can follow it up with winning our remaining 2019 AFCON qualifiers and also winning the 2019 AFCON. We also need to follow it up with at least an excellent showing at the 2021 AFCON.

2022 WC draws would be made around December 2021. It means results of 2018 WC down to late 2021 would be part of the factors in the ranking points (FIFA uses results from the last 4years).

To be realistic, that Pot1 would be difficult for any African team. Even from my analysis above we may just be in pot2.

I know a lot of people want to get Poland from Pot 1, but I sincerely hope we avoid them for that reason.

So my prefered group would be:

Portugal
Peru
Iran
Nigeria

OR

Argentina
England
Costa Rica
Nigeria

Here you go again.

It is not simple straight arithmetic calculation.

We lost over 70points from that Algeria draw. The Argentina win redeemed us a bit. Maybe na 60th position we for find ourselves.

When you draw or lose to a team that is less than you in ranking. It will negate your points. The further the team is behind you the more the deduction. Algeria were about 20 places behind us. You draw with such a team and you get a massive deduction. It was a case of 3 steps backwards and 1 step forwards for us.
Or more precisely 70 points deduction and 20 points addition.

The Algeria game carried 2.5 points while the Argentina game carried only 1 point.

cc: Bascovanveli

I think this ranking is actually for the previous month (October) and so matches played in this month we reflect next month.
If my thought is correct then there's no point blaming the draw against Algeria as affecting our ranking or thinking we shud have moved up because of beating Argentina. All these will be considered in the next ranking. I stand to be corrected though...
