The claim of the Ijaws over parts of Gelegele has been contested in Court up to the Supreme Court level where they lost the claim. This present state issue is only a strong-arm twisting to acquire Benin land, and it is simply unreasonable, mindlessly adventurous and our people will not let it happen.

He added noted that judgments of courts of competent jurisdiction on the ownership of Gelegele, and that one of such judgment was the one delivered in favour of Benin by Justice Ekeruche on December 22, 1978 at the High Court of Justice, Benin, in Suit No B/44/1970, expatiating that in the judgment, Justice Ekeruche held as follows:

“Finally, I enter judgment in this case as follows: for the avoidance of all doubts, argument or controversy. we have been living in peace with our ijaw brothers all these while and we have never had any issues with them. This issue first came out in the 70s when oil was discorved there, the ijaws because of royalties they will be collecting from oil companies started laying claim to the land and like i posted earlier on 3 courts gave the binis victory. Well everything went back to normal, then the seaport issue came that did not really take of smoothly as FG did not really put money into developing it. We the Edos are the only land locked state in the Niger delta which is so unfair, we even have this matter on the floor of the senate regarding our boundaries. Now God blessed us with a new governor and new monarch who are so economically minded and the first point of call was creating a seaport. The Oba of Benin later told the governor that creating a sea port would be slow and the FG wont really support the idea so it was changed from a seaport to an export zone. ( The Gelegele EXport Zone ). This Export zone is meant to attract manufacturing companies around the Gelegele axis which will then trigger the seaport. Wonderful economic ideas, government started mobilizing then all of a sudden our ijaw brothers said they own gelegele again. We did not even take the issue serious only the BIM and few groups in Benin took it up. To us, once the export zone comes to life, we all will enjoy it be you ijaw or edo. The ijaws there felt if companies would be coming, then these companies would pay royalties to the OBA of Benin, hence they rushed in making the son of the late chief priest of the Egbesu order Pere of Olaidama kingdom. The young Pere of Gbaramatu who has been traveling from state to state visiting ijaw clans has been causing confusion here in Edo state. The Late Pere of Gbaramatu would never have done what this one is doing. This pere of Gbaramatu has used his mouth in creating 5 ijaw kingdoms in Edo state. We want peace, nobody can develop in an atmosphere of violence, what has all the violence brought to many ijaw communities. They feel because they have guns now they can fight everybody. They have had issues with the itsekiris, they have had issues with the urhobos. When we are doing things we should look at the future, getting guns for a tribal would not be difficult at all for the Edos but after the fight, these guns will fall into the hands of foolish people. When the ijaws recently made an SOS call the president concerning this issue, they did not refer to this Godwin as Pere of Oloidama KIngdom, they refered to him as pere of Oloidama clan. One would wonder why the sudden change of title. Let us shun violence and come to the table and discuss. The Oba of Benin is magnanimous enough to allow Godwin be the leader of his people within the Benin Kingdom not as a king of another kingdom inside his kingdom. God bless the Edos and the ijaws.
