I commend you for the selfless help you are offering here.

Please could you suggest school that would fund me for an Ms program in ECE( computer systems &networks specialization)?

Here is my profile
Gre : Q161/V150/ 3
Toefl: 100+ (expecting result in 12days)
GPA: 4.67/5
2yrs experience
No paper

Thanks

Georgia State University
Uni of Texas Dallas
North Eastern
UTArlington

Your GPA is very competitive but still there is no guarantee. You should really be looking out for schools that have your area of interest first and foremost then you can prune your list down to what seems realistic considering your profile.

Thanks to scholastica, ponpon and other contributors here

Had my GRE after less than a month serious prep...thanks to hints on this thread
Q 154
V 152
AWA 3.5 ( funniest thing is I prepared for AWA two days before the exam)

In short, my advice if you intend to write GRE...Take time to practice, practice and practice (say two months). Gonna rewrite later, buh definitely not now.

My Profile

Course : Construction Management
CGPA : 3.89/4.00 ( WES)
Publications: 5

I'm applying to University of Florida( PhD Construction mgt), but the acceptance rate is 38%...Nonetheless, I'm optimistic.

Min Qualifictn. for the Department
Verbal- 146
Quantitative- 148
TOEFL- 80

Average is
V = 150
Q = 159
CGPA = 3.6

I have a supervisor there already who is very willing to supervise my thesis....

I plan to write TOEFL by December hopefully...

Kindly help out with schools suggestion.

You should be optimistic; you have the GPA UofF looks out for and that you have a potential thesis advisor ought to be a good sign.

I won't rest on my laurels if I am you. You can Google "construction management grad school rankings" for example. Then look through the whole list for which school has your area of specialization or interest. After that, you can scour their site for possible average GRE scores (as I am sure your GPA will qualify just about anywhere).

Take note that average GRE score does not mean they never accepted anyone with scores less than that. So a school that might have 161Q as average could still accept you same as a score of 162-164. The ones above this, not so much.

It is always better to look for schools based on your interest first, before profile, as you could find advisors in your proposed schools that may not care about your stats so much and just be really keen on working with you.

If you have any issues finding out the average Q score of the shortlisted schools, come back here to ask me and I can help you with that.

hello People, good day to y'all ...
Although I've been reading this thread and following religiously for a while, i just registered for it today (I'm still unfamiliar with its usage)
I have a few questions to ask, better still i need your input even if my questions seem banal.
I just graduated from unilag about 2 weeks ago and wrote the gre last week..
My scores were not so good, as i wasn't really entrenched in my studies as i was still working on my project.
I got a 315 , Quant 158 Verbal 157 (i plan on writing another exam in january, i didn't really read for this one i guess scores were fortuitous )
My questions are:
1. I graduated with a Gpa of 2.96 (terrible i know), but what are my chances, if any, of getting a scholarship..
2. I applied to random schools on that day, because the test was paid for by my Sister a week before without my prior knowledge and I didn't really Check it proper , what schools can i now apply to?
3. As I have no chance of getting my transcript till early February , do i still have a chance of applying for 2018
4. Please I'm in need of a mentor if possible to put me through, i may sound Ingenious, but please help my cause..
Waiting on your auspicious responses, God bless

Congrats on your GRE.

Your chance of getting anything you want boils down to applying to the right schools. But to even do that, you need to know what you want to study and I cannot glean that from your post.

When you say you have no chance of getting your transcript by february what do you mean? You need a scanned copy for most of your applications already as most schools will not accept a students copy.

Anyways, these sort of things are usually case by case.

Good profile Yildiz.

Most PhD programs to the B-rated programs are actually funded. So it is not the "funded" ones you should be looking for, but where you can work on the research interests you have and also where your profile can be super competitive. The funding is almost an unplanned consequence of that - for a PhD that is.

Great!!
Thank you for the swift reply, Much appreciated.
I studied Geography and Regional Planning in the University of Lagos Right now I'm on a 2.92 but my 2nd semester results although not been released has been very good, over 3.0 is a guarantee (Class 2017 as aforementioned )
About the schools i sent my scores too, i honestly have no interest in them i just copied from people i met at the centre, thats why i want to start anew
Syracuse
Mary Washington
Baylor university
Rice university
Honestly , I'm one bad procrastinator as I've skipped writing the Gre 3 times this year, until my sister just got angry and paid (I only had to do it because i no wan waste her 50K )
Now, i plan on applying for masters in Geographic information systems, population, transport or geography related courses. i believe i have a chance to apply to new schools but i'm of the notion that I cant get a full ride of at least an assistantship because My people at home cant afford it.
This is all me with a new beginning...
I just saw someone write about auburn, for me any good school is okay, im not so witty to be picky.
Finally, i apologise for my long post.. im not really a gragarious fellow so my writ says my mind.
Awaiting your reply, thank you.

Start by Googling your course/interest and attaching grad school to it. See what turns up. It is better to look through the list on your own to know which school has what you are looking for. Your list should be whittled down by you and nobody else if you really want to change your moniker from lazy folk to hardworking folk. grin

I would only chip in 1 or 2 things if I see effort on your part. Many on here are looking for handouts while they sit idly probably twiddling their thumbs.

Pls house,
I need schools in the US with january deadline that offer funding for Chem Engr. PhD or MS. I dont think I can meet the December 15th deadline of most schools. My GRE is next Thursday and I'm yet to write TOEFL.
My UG CGPA is 4.83/5 (ChE).

Your GPA is something.

I know for sure that msinus.com contains a list of schools and the concomitant deadlines for spring, fall or summer. That list will help you.

Funny enough, I found it, when I was looking for deadlines for schools for myself.

Good day scholars,
I just did my GRE exam last week, and it was, indeed, a very disappointing result (Q-150 and V-148 AWA-Pending).

Though my preparation was for a very short period-- less than 3 weeks combined with business (so as to raise funds).

Is there still any possibility of getting a direct PhD in US or Canada?

Here is my profile:
CGPA: 4.51/5
IELTS: 7.0
Publications: 1
Course: Agricultural and Environmental Engineering

Kindly help with suggestions please

Ofcourse, there is a possibility with that GPA of yours. Especially in the USA.

Now Google schools that have this course and check for faculty that are into your preferred research area.

Check the admission requirements for your schools and course. Some good schools do not have much regard for the GRE for certain courses. Find out if yours qualifies in your prospective schools.

I believe your GPA, publication and IELTS are good enough so in a situation where the GRE is not highly regarded or better still, where even your scores qualify you, find out if they fund their PhDs (they most likely will). Then apply.

Try to look at Auburn and University of Iowa as well.

Your GPA is so high...
Do your best in your coming GRE.
You can use this weekend to browse the internet extensively to search for schools.
You can use www.usnews.com or www.4icu.org to search for schools in USA state by state. Taking into account the program requirements, application fee, deadline, faculty research interests...
Is important you do this search this weekend so you can shortlist atleast four schools you will send your GRE scores to immediately after the test.
If you have additional money, is good you register for TOEFL too.
I appreciate your response, would check the links as advised.

Thank you.

I know LSU will be in January. They fund MS for ChE but it is competitive as a result. Toledo too can be a safe school for you.

Personally, I would advice you to look more into direct PhDs. So Delaware, Boulders will also be good schools for that. Look at TUFTs too. They have been funding people left right and centre with your type or GPA.

Aim for toppest Q scores. It could open you up to more schools like North Carolina State in Raleigh and Ohio state.

Hello house. In keeping with tradition, Here's my:

GRE EXPERIENCE

I wrote my Gre at JKK yesterday by 10:00 AM. had a not so great score.

I started serious prep two months ago. The first thing i did was take a powerprep test as my seniors here advised. The powerprep score was
Q 140
V 161

I reported the score here and i was given advice on how to improve my quant score. Here is how i prepared:

AWA
I read a few essays on essay judge 2 days to test and read the commentaries as well. I also made sure i answered all AWA questions in all the practice tests i took.

VERBAL
I did not have enough time to prepare for this, since my quant score was the most important. I basically ignored this but i also answered the questions for all practice tests.

Quantitative

This was basically all I did for two whole months. After the first powerprep, the first thing i did was Study the official guide and answered all practice questions. I then moved on to the Manhattan 8 series where I only used the first 6 books. I took the manhattan practice test after these and my score was still 142. I felt I was not getting anywhere so i came back here looking for a tutor but the gurus here advised me against that and suggested more study materials. So, I moved on to watching and actively practising with all the quant videos and questions on the magoosh premium account. I would watch the videos, pause and practice and answer questions where necessary. I also solved the questions, and made sure to watch the explanation video and understand the workings on any question I missed. About 2 weeks to test, I moved on to the Manhattan 5lb book. I was on leave at the time so I was able to fully focus on studying. I skipped all the verbal questions on the 5lb and moved right to quant. I was able to solve all questions and study all the answers, especially the ones I missed.

On the day before the exam, i didn't do anything GRE related. I also made sure i got a good night's sleep so i woke up refreshed on exam day.

I got to jkk a few minutes to 10, did all the necessary things and was assigned a computer. I got my issue essay prompt and almost peed my pants, i was that scared. I sha did something sha and moved on. The argument essay was easy, was able to answer that effectively. I had VQVQV which was what i was praying for. The first verbal was a breeze, I couldn't answer 4 questions in the first quant before my time elapsed. I also didn't leave my seat during the 10 minutes break, just sat there and cried because I knew i had already failed quant. Second verbal was tougher but i pulled through, 2nd quant confirmed my suspicion that i bleeped up on the first. third verbal had like 10 RCs which is the question type i hated most. I got my score:

Q 150
V 161
AW- still expecting

I didn't report my scores to any school because i felt it wasn't good enough. My profile:

CGPA - 3.03/5
GRE - 311(Q150 V161)
TOEFL - not yet

I want to apply for Masters in Finance. Would you recommend that i rewrite GRE or are there programs that can accept such poor quant score?

My initial shortlisted schools were:

UMD
University of Oregon
Georgia State University
Hult international Business school

No vex say my post long o.

Congratulations and thanks for this detailed account of your experience.

Personally, your composite score is very good and you improved tremendously from your first tentative test Q-score to your main day test score. 10 marks is huge in the GRE.

I don't see anything wrong with your schools and I believe you could get in based on how you package yourself. The only reason you would need to write another GRE is if you are aiming for way higher schools or if you got rejected now after trying.

The real question is, are you aiming solely for funding? If no. Then I think you stand a very good chance.

You can check TAMUK and Western Michigan Uni at Kalamazoo as well since your Q score is within their range. I believe anyone can get funded but not at the same time; while some might get that GA/TA/RA before leaving for the US, others might get it after a semester.

I pray you smile come fall 2018. Good luck.

Thank you very much. I will check out the schools you mentioned and add them to my list. I honestly thought my Q score would be too low for any school, but I'll try as you've said. I am not really concerned with funding, my sponsor-dad- is willing to pay. (yes, the $65000 for even UMD), though funding wouldn't hurt too.

Thanks for the uplifting comments.

I plan to write TOEFL next month. Do you think 2 weeks preparation will be okay? What materials can I use to prepare? Thanks as you oblige.

If you can pay, you would most likely get in to atleast 2 of your schools. Your Q-score is not as bad as you think. It just depends on the schools you are considering. I guess UMD is your ambitious school and that is splendid. Congrats ahead.

2 weeks might even be too much because I got bored after studying for a week. I know I can say that to you with a straight face because your V score in GRE (even from your practice tests) were very good.

So just work on the listening & speaking parts. I wager you could get the full 30 in the reading (but please don't trivialize it). I am also pretty certain your writing won't have issues so 1 week will be sufficient or atmost 2 weeks. Not a day more.

As for study materials, people used NOTEFULL (and it is well celebrated and widely recommended) but I did not. I looked at the TOEFL official guide and cracking the TOEFL - Both materials I got from that selfstudy link on page1.

Regards.
