Scholastica16: Thanks for the prompt reply. I will get the materials suggested and go through them. I think Dec 2nd is still available, I could register for that day. So I can go to work on my SOP as soon as possible. Thank you for all your help. |

Scholastica16: Thank You for the reply, id like to expound on my previous write-up. Accoding to what i hear from school, Unilag is trying to make a policy where students can only get their transcripts after graduation (in this case 21-23rd February 2018) As for study motives , i am leaning towards Geography or Geographic information system, Right now, schools considered are university of Illinois UT el paso University of British Columbia Syracuse university... My Main problem is "finding funding", although i have spoken to their graduate advisors , they have not been forthcoming .. So if there are other schools that can be listed here, id be grateful .. id rather hear from those with experience |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by LazyFolk: 1:16pm On Nov 26, 2017 |
Scholastica16: Haha, Lazyfolk is only entailed when something disinterests me. Quite the contrary is the case now. Course to apply for Geographic information system or Geography related courses... Schools checked; All schools in Texas, Syracuse, Illinois , Alberta, Montana, Etsu, Cleveland and about 10 others.. When i mean checked, i mean i wrote and got a reply from almost all.. Now, 90% of texas schools have my intended study course, My Koko is now to get funded. Is it prior , with, or after admission ? Does anyone on here know about uni Illinois urbana? Or any other uni, that i can work on? Please you've gotta chip in, as you can see Lazyfolk is a paradox. |

Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Scholastica16: 1:39pm On Nov 26, 2017 |
LazyFolk: UNILAG is presenting a real conundrum now. This is because most schools will not act on the uploaded copy of a transcript if it is not the "official" one with the associated stamps and signatures that it should contain. Some schools may allow you upload a student's copy but they are usually few and far between. Then, as for funding, nobody can truly predict it but gettting funded by UIUC for your master's is almost impossible. They also do not accept direct PhDs. UBC in Canada maybe too ambitious for your profile (your GPA in this case). Syracuse is a private University in NY whose tuition and fees are pretty prohibitive. You could get funded but that is usually at PhD levels and getting direct PhD admits into such a school is competitive. In all your school choices on this list, El Paso seems to be the only realistic one but then I am not God. I would give a list of schools to consider in my response to your next post. |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Scholastica16: 1:52pm On Nov 26, 2017 |
LazyFolk: Urbana Champaign is a top school. Consider Q163-165, GPA 4.2/5 (In Nigeria) as starting points to be competitive. The general area around it in Ilinois, Chicago is even expensive to live in so that is for that. You should definitely look at B, B- and C+ schools as they could fund you for your program since your GRE will ably compete in such schools. I know your GPA in the 4 point scale will just land at 3.0/4.0 and in most schools in the US, that is sufficient for an MSc or direct PhD (if you really want to be sure you would get funded). Here is a list of schools that your GRE is better than their averages. You can continue your correspondences with their grad advisors if they have what you are looking for; UNewMexico, Dayton, Arlington, Witchita State, UT Health Science Centre, Wayne State, Texas San Antonio, Lamar Uni, Morgan State, Prairie View A&M. 3 Likes 1 Share |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by LazyFolk: 5:11pm On Nov 26, 2017 |
Scholastica16: UNILAG is trying to make collection of transcript a full online process , no more individual appearance .. thats probably why so its students can send and receive transcripts easily.. Well Constructed .. Exactly the reply i was expecting .. Thank You UIUC has a BS-Phd program though 5 Years straight. (For those interested )

Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by gokuu(m): 8:13pm On Nov 26, 2017 |
HOYINDARMORLAR: I have been applying to MFin programs. The elite programs (think MIT, Vanderbilt, WUSTL, Texas@Austin) do not fund. What they do give is some partial scholarship based on the overall profile you will bring to the class. These programs are uber-competitive with GRE averages of over 320 to even begin to look like a contender, and they really like candidates with undergrad internships. And, these are pre-experience programs, meaning they want people with little or no full-time work experience. The mid/lower tier programs (think UMD, Ohio State, Florida, MTSU) have some really good funding opportunities like you would find in an engineering or science program. I have a friend who is fully funded at Ohio State despite having an underwhelming profile. The downer with these kinds of programs is that the big banks and financial institutions do not recruit there, so do not expect to see JPMorgan or Goldman Sachs on campus. You should also look at University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business; they have just launched a new MS Finance program and it looks good. 4 Likes |

adetola007: Thanks brother. I did not go in September/ October like you guys. I stalled in faith and it yielded. That is the simplest way I can put it. In latest December I should be in the USA for a Thesis-based masters as planned. In due course, I would explain my journey. I understand you went to Imperial College which is good, but I am a bit crestfallen it is for Petroleum Engineering though. Anyways, good to hear from you. 2 Likes |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Scholastica16: 9:16pm On Nov 26, 2017 |
Karo168: You are getting good scores, which means you have all the basics. Perhaps, you are just making some silly mistakes and falling for some of the traps. You are in good hands. You will do well. Very well in fact. I believe you could clock 320+ on the main day because your Q score in Manhattan means you would do better with the actual test. As for the V, your 2nd PowerPrep is very encouraging. What other tips are you looking for? I think you should also take the tests on the ETS guide in a proper simulated manner as they would most likely tell where you exactly are - preparation wise. |

Permit me to quote my very first post here: "Great house it is! I have been following this thread silently and ardently. Please let me take centre stage. I will be as objective as possible. My profile goes thus: Course of study in Undergrad school (in one of the Federal Universities in the South-South): Electrical/Electronic Engineering CGPA: 4.488 GRE score: *In God's able hands*. Lol Work Expeience: 5year+, in one of the major GSM service provider companies I am currently a 2nd/final year MBA student in one of the State Universities. Dunno if CGPA here would count towards increasing the strength of my application tho. For records sake, I had a 4.500 in my first year. I have some certifications, most relevant to my field would be the famous but recondite CCNA and CCNP-route certifications. As it stands, all I want is to get admitted into some engineering school in the US, REGARDLESS of its ranking. Oh yeah. Lol 1st CHALLENGE (FINANCIAL AID): I need a school (preferably in Texas) where I could study and work on campus if possible; also where I would be offered Graduate assistantship, plus any other financial aid available. I do not really know much about studying abroad as virtually 70% of my knowledge-base on this subject has come from this thread. 2ND CHALLENGE (COURSE VS SCHOOL OF STUDY): Choosing the right major has been a very serious challege. A friend in the US gave me an inside scoop as to a certain 'safe school' with a high acceptance rate (especially of int'l students) I could apply to. The only shortfall is that Computer Science is the only major I could go for in this school. I intend to apply to UT Dallas as well, since they offer Masters in Telecommunications Engineering which I crave for, judging by the hands-on experience I have bagged from my current job already. Computer Science is very cool to me but I have no rudimentary programming skill or knowledge whatsoever. My target is spring 2018 - dunno how feasible this is. I intend to start intense preparations for the GRE in July (my MBA final exams would have been over by then), sit for it in August so as to beat the application deadline of September 30 stipulated by most schools. Special regards to all folks who scored 150 and above in the Verbal section. That section of the exam no easy at all oh. God help us grin angry Any sort of reply is most welcome. Please help a brother's plight... " Work has been really distracting, but I eventually sat for the GRE two days ago. I couldn't maintain a clear head all through the test and it did impact negatively on my score. So I'd advise future test-takers, in addition to the numerous admonitions available on this gracious thread, not to overlook the psychological aspect of things. Drink less water in the morning of the test day and be ready to use blunt pencils also (wish i knew this before hand - missed my special pen ) Q154, V154 (scored better on all practice tests prior to test day, with higher Quant scores definitely). Subpar performance I know, but I do not intend to sit for the GRE again AWA...available in 10days Sent scores to: TSU, Nashville (Computer Info Systems, direct Ph.D intended) PVAMU, Texas (Computer Info Systems, Ms - no Ph.D) UT Dallas (telecoms) Working Exp: approximately 6years in the telecom field UnderGrad CGPA: 4.488 (3.59 WES unofficial, still under review) Done with the MBA now...: 4.36 (transcript not available yet) Preferred/Intended grad school major (Fall 2018): Computer Info Systems. *Do I really need to retake the GRE? *Is it compulsory that I sit for TOEFL? Most int'l admission requirement pages of US schools that I have perused seem to have Nigeria on their proof of English proficiency exemption list, especially as our native language is English (that's me being lazy too) *What other schools can I apply to, with funding and a direct Ph.D in mind vis-a-vis my profile. I am disinterested in the ranking of schools so any suggestions will suffice---as long as they can fully defray my tuition et al. lol @Scholastica16 and other great men in the house... |

Scholastica16:Wow, congrats bro. So happy for you. For the petroleum engineering, that's the only admission I have in UK, just applied to Imperial just to fulfill righteousness, never expected ptdf will be transparent and the list came out too late to start looking for admission |
