Hello everyone.
i have been on here long enough and i have noticed the odd way most of you talk about first class graduates, the way you abuse, insult, bully, shame and condemn people who make the slightest attempt to mention that they have first-class. my cousin had a similar experience last week; when during gist with his friends he told them about the grade he graduated with, and to his suprise, he was not only shamed, he was insult heavily. Talks like 'not as if you will become rich', 'first class graduate with third-class Job' ,'you think its by grade' etc caused him to quietly leave their presence embarassed.

But seriously, why do most people react with explosive anger if they find out you are a firstclass, telling somebody about it is tantamout to saying you are boko haram member or you are gay. Why is academic excellence not celebrated by nigerians? is firstclass a curse? should a student delibrately skip class work, exams or test to prevent him\her from getting the evil curse called first class? would you discourage a sister or brother of yours who is at the verge of excellence to give up?

Methinks it's just pent up frustration. Just like the story of the Grapes of Wrath. Since you can't have it, you begin to think it's evil or irrelevant.

True we live in a country where your grade points on leaving university don't mean anything other than a paper certificate. Still that is not enough reason for people to hurl insults at people who make one. Forget the story of not getting jobs and stuff, but I feel such academic feat should be encouraged.

Then again I feel if one doesn't have anything good to say, a closed mouth is the best option.

The truth is, students who aspire to be first class have a single goal: to be gainfully employed. They do not develop the mindset to use their intelligence to develop themselves. This is the reason they concentrate all their lives in book during school. No connection with friends who can help after school. No additional skill that will help in after school. The mindset of other students is to widen out. Most learn other skills employers like. A first class graduate who studied a medical course may not be able to fix a light bulb. It is as bad as that. Someone from that same level may be able to do that and other valuable life skills like service a generator. These are skills employer like to see. And managerial skills are very lacking in most first class. They do not like investing in business for fear of the risk

A croacoach can not be innocent in a gathering of fowls, That's what happens when you announce to a group of Embittered third class graduates or those whose results weren't up to that grade , That you have a First Class, some of them try as much as possible to make you realize that your academic achievement Is worthless, since they couldn't get it, they will as well make those who got it feel like they've wasted their precious time. (Operation pull him down).

That aside, it's really baffling that Nigerians celebrate Entertainment over education. No one is passionate again about achieving much academically, when you look at most Nigerian youths all you see is a potential wizkid, davido, lil Kesh and the likes, where are our Einsteins and Teslas!

Even among the Nigerian students in school, you will see that their only passionate about money e. g when you ask an average Nigerian structural engineer and an American, why they Chose their course, it is very likely that you will come across the below.... .

American Structural Engineer: well, from my teenage years till now I've always been interested in structures, how an object could serve an aesthetic purpose and yet functionally serve a different one, how can something be useful as a work of art and still do other things... what is behind this multi diversity? these are the questions I seek to answer, and also why I took up this course.

Nigerian structural Engineer: Heh! Structural Engineering! no go near that course oh, money dey na, once you graduate na shell straight, infact top ten best courses in Nigeria na structural engineering be no 3 or 2, nai make me pick the course oh. Smh.

Here lies the problem...
Majority of graduates with the First Class grade here in Nigeria, have absolutely nothing to show which can benefit the society.

Hence, they are seen as better 'Crammers' of the copy and paste and get your paper.

Please it will be better, if you showed statistics to prove this point?

So that it wouldn't seem like you arrived at a Hasty conclusion without bases.

I don't understand, First class candidates are always victim of this. I so much respect the first class candidates but the truth of the matter is that they must prove their self out there. Candidates who graduated with third class, especially those who were close to second class upper always counter the first class and 2.1 candidates.

My advice, let him or her be ready to take challenge and show him or herself stronger.

Thank you.

First Class graduate will always have my respect any time any day. These guys rock if not for some of them that are a bit unfortunate. And that can be attributed to the fact that life is unfair.

Statistically, the number of first class that are living a little bit above average is far more than people with a third class grade. I didn't make a first class but i can categorically say that all the first class i know are very much okay and are making waves in their various field expect for one that I know that his testimony is on the way.

Pls let us appreciate them. It isn't easy.

people would naturally hate you when you have what they can't have.

I used to have a friend, he acted like he never liked being a first class student, he would call first class students all sort of names, then suddenly in one of our semesters, he happened to hit a first class GP, hehe. you need to see the jubilation that day, he was so happy about his result. he felt good. and I learnt a lesson that day;

people do not really hate first class, they only hate the fact that they can't make first class.
