Forget the mythological figures and focus on historical records.
Why do you find it hard to imagine that some people (Yoruba) would want to copy the super power of their region (Benin Kingdom) ?
Did Dahomey not rename itself after the Benin Kingdom ?
This is how powerful the Benin Kingdom was:

https://www.britishmuseum.org/PDF/british_museum_benin_art.pdf

Opiletool:

How can it be true? The title of their kings was not oba until the arrival of oranyan at their place. Yoruba already have the oba word existing in the yoruba names and lexicon since forever. The likes of obatala, obalufon, obaluaye which are among the leaders of the so called 14 clans in ife before the decision to unite them under one king, which began the power tussle between oduduwa and obatala. So how was it theirs? They should give proof of how the word was theirs.

If you continue with insults, i'll leave this thread for you. I'm not forcing you to believe this but there is a pure Edo woman who lives close to my house, i know her mum and i can testify that their language are not related to Yoruba. She got married to an Hausa man last year and she gave birth to her first daughter this year.

During the naming ceremony; christian, Yoruba, Edo names were given to her daughter. I confronted her mum and asked why, her mum said that's how Yoruba names are given at their village even though they ain't Yoruba.

Don't mind them, Even davido naming his child Imade, they tried to claim it as Yoruba, just imagine, Imade a classic Edo name, not knowing that Davidos mom is Edo and the child was named after her...

This Yoruba ppl I don't know why they like bringing ridicule on their selfs

I have told you people already, it is illogical to claim that a name is yoruba if it is bared by Edo and yoruba.
Besides, your story makes no sense, I am a full blooded Edo and I have only two names: Efosa and Jude.
Stop trying to make yourselves the mouthpiece of our culture of which you know nothing !

I presume you are Igbo, so now because I met an anambra man bearing Okon or Effiong is that enough to say Igbo's are Efik.... Or the other day one of the aspirants of the just concluded anambra election bears Osekola is that enough to say he is and Edo man?.. Even if that is clearly an Edo name!

PrinceOgun and the other guy, like i said who am i to force my opinion on you?

History can never be change just because we are ashame.

My tribe was invaded by the Nupes but that does not mean my tribe still pay tribute to Bida.

Let history be history and let us face the future because there is no point argueing what will still bring division amongst us.

My uncle before his death wrote my family history, in that book my great-grandfather was one of the greatest personality in the history of Yagba people yet was taken into exile by the Nupes but does that mean i should hold grudges against the Nupes? We have okuns in Niger state due to the Okun-Nupe war yet they still live in peace.

History is History, let the future be our glory.

My friend the real problem is the way you reason, just type my name on the nairaland research motor, you will see that I am providing evidence for my claims. But still you think that your yoruba unsubstantuated claims which I have incidentally proven to be lies are "history".
Use your brain !
History is not about opinions, it is about facts and logics. Opinions have no place in a science !

i used to think just like this before but never again will i deceive myself that there is special bond of love between Edo and yorubas.
The division is not from us but from them, and since they've chosen new identity for themselves (especailly their youths on this forum) we have no reason calling them our brothers or saying we are same lest they start suspecting us or thinking they are special. Just slight difference between them and igbo in terms of suspicion and hatred for yoruba.
Did you even see the interview one of their elders, Ajayi bembe granted to punch newspaper last week concerning lagos? If you've not seen it pls do so quickly and tell me why we should keep believing yorubas and Edo are same.
May your days be long

The ones on this forum are nonentities, the important ones are the royals. They are custodians of the culture and laws and they know our connection even though they have a new identity. Àjàyí was just rambling, his Awori assertion proved he doesn't know what he is saying. He claimed and he is not Yorùbá, if you aren't an Awori you are not Yorùbá if you are then you are Yorùbá. Just because we ruled Dahomey doesn't make it our very own land

It is Oseloka. How is that an Edo name? What does it mean in Edo? Because you saw 'Ose' (which, I agree was borrowed from an Edoid word for God) in a name then that name must be an Edo name? What about the rest of the name --- what does Eloka mean in Edo?

It is like a Cross River man saying Nwobasi is a Cross River name because he saw Obasi in the name.

There is no need trying to stretch hands of brotherhood to these people if their known Oba of BINI could politicised our history by claiming Odu'a was their lost and a weakling ogiso only son. The same Ogiso called king of the sky within Edo world that has nothing to link him to maternal lineage but gave birth to another man by himself..... They are not worth the trouble. Thank God, we are more populous than them .Else their story might be seen as true rather than the grandeur lies to distort history. Yet the BINI knows Ogun or Oguum as god of iron . They are not worth it at all...
