Perhaps, you were oblivious about it sir. Your offence was a classical suarez, subtle yet lethal. I had to play Vidic, considering the research time I put in it. Lol

Anyways, I now know that acing the GRE is a very major determinant here. I just needed to know if a low GP could get funding. Thanks for that.

And yes, Penn state and university of Arkansas have GAs for MSc students.

Going by your assertion that most schools rarely fund MSc, do you think a great GRE score can get me a Phd?

Best wishes.

I think so. But vying for the M.S in Arkansas is also not out of the way. It is school by school really.

LOL @ subtle yet lethal.

Depends on the school. So you may need to check the requirements of your school. Some schools will evaluate the application with just uploaded versions but others will insist they must receive the official ones to deem your app complete.

boss please what makes a full funding different from a GA/TA thing? does it cover travel expenses and accomodation blablabla? Just curious

I have been applying to MFin programs. The elite programs (think MIT, Vanderbilt, WUSTL, Texas@Austin) do not fund. What they do give is some partial scholarship based on the overall profile you will bring to the class. These programs are uber-competitive with GRE averages of over 320 to even begin to look like a contender, and they really like candidates with undergrad internships. And, these are pre-experience programs, meaning they want people with little or no full-time work experience.

The mid/lower tier programs (think UMD, Ohio State, Florida, MTSU) have some really good funding opportunities like you would find in an engineering or science program. I have a friend who is fully funded at Ohio State despite having an underwhelming profile. The downer with these kinds of programs is that the big banks and financial institutions do not recruit there, so do not expect to see JPMorgan or Goldman Sachs on campus.

You should also look at University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business; they have just launched a new MS Finance program and it looks good.

Yes it is. Very very very possible. Just do very well in the Q section of the GRE.

Consider El Paso as a safe school. Word is, they funded every maths student that was accepted.

Hi bro, quick question. Is there any school you're aware of that's funding compt sci / info tech/ cybersecurity just like @bolded

My GRE is in a couple of days, I will be sending my test scores to ETSU, USF, UTSA need one or more schools that has high funding probability for the program despite its competitiveness.

Thanks

Hmmm. UIUC and Carnegie Mellon are highly funded for CS although mega-competitive. But you could try Cleveland State also.

Yes you need to. It helps sometimes because the adcoms will relay your app to said people who could (on liking you) influence the adcoms to accept you.

Yes! as scholastica16 has rightly pointed out. Try and mail the prof. in your research area. Introduce yourself briefly and express willingness to join their team.

However, due to volume of emails they normal received from prospective students, it can be very disappointing at time, not to get the reply soon. But here is the catch!

When mailing the prof. Try and read one or two things about them before, and make the subject of your email some thing that showing appreciation like: Thank you sir, etc. The goal is to make them open the email, and by extension see your profile. The first paragraph should reflect the subject of the email. Then in the second paragraph, introduce yourself along with your profile, and express willingness to join their research team, which hopefully will entice them.

This has worked for me. I just got a reply from a prof. in GaTeach expressing interest in me, if am admitted into any GT graduate programs. Though, am just prepping for my GRE and TOELF, hope to write the exam early Jan. God willing!.

GSU grad coordinator also tell me to start talking to any prof. I will be willing to do research with, because I'm also considering that as well. So, its a good thing if you can get in touch with any POI in your research area, as soon as possible. All the best bro!

Hello NLander,

I need advise urgently, I really don't have a wonderful profile but I'm seriously looking for funding.

I had my first degree in Petroleum Engineering
UG CGPA - 5.5/7.0
WES Unofficial GPA (last 60 hrs) - 3.51/4.0
GRE Score - 301 (Q159, V142, AW3.5) Terrible I know
Work experience: 2

I saw that the GRE requirement for MSC in PE at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette is 285. I saw that one can apply for a PhD in Systems engineering with concentration in any of their engineering options with a Bachelors. Does anyone here think I have a chance? I would have applied for their MSC put it seems with PhD, the chances of getting funding is higher. Someone who know about this school should pls advise.

I'm actually not interested in PE anymore, I'm more concern about funding. In fact, if I can take any program related to my field so long I can get funding, the only thing it will cost me is the time to tweak my motivation letter to suit the field.

I am also considering MSc in Environmental engineering at Purdue University and University of Massachusetts . The application deadline for the former is 15th Dec so I need to act fast. I just need someone who probably have idea of this schools to either encourage or dissuade (so I won't waste the application fee) me from experience.

Finally, looking at my terrible profile what does anyone advise? I know it's difficult to tell, if I one can get funding in most these schools. But if one is to take a risk, take a risk where you have chances. I need someone to make recommendations for this confused fellow.

Thanks a lot.

arTiculaTe01,

I believe I recognize the original post but the moniker not so much. I could barely make out your post perfectly but I think I understand what you are driving at.

Your GPA is your asset, coupled with your now MBA degree, and 5+ years of work experience. Don't downplay these aspects as the GRE - as we have said ad nauseam - is just one aspect.

Personally, you are selling yourself a bit short. You should combine Direct PhD apps with some MS apps. You really could get funded. I wonder why you are not as optimistic for yourself as I am for you.

And yes, Texas is good and reasonably cheap to live in but I would advice you to look for departments in various schools that have your program/interest, across the US. Don't settle for just Texas.

Have you looked at Texas Tech in Lubbock? Anyways, UTD is also a good school. And if you are keen on your Telecommunications research area, restrict your search to it. See, the thing about Computer Science is, in the US, it is MIGHTY competitive.

Look at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill as well and maybe Arlington. University of North Texas too. Since you are big on Texas.

I know you alluded to TAMUK in your post but they won't fully fund you perhaps except for a direct PhD. I expect you to have made enquiries by now about it. I know for certain that for M.S, perhaps you would get some partial funding in form of instate tuitions but if you need strong financial aid, the direct PhD might be your best bet.

Good luck.

Thanks Bro. U da man!

Without much ado, let me reiterate one of the questions I asked on my former post, which you (nor any other guru) failed to throw light on:

Is the TOEFL exam compulsory? What are the merits/demerits of sitting for it/having a TOEFL score if it isn't compulsory afterall...

Urbana Champaign is a top school. Consider Q163-165, GPA 4.2/5 (In Nigeria) as starting points to be competitive. The general area around it in Ilinois, Chicago is even expensive to live in so that is for that.

You should definitely look at B, B- and C+ schools as they could fund you for your program since your GRE will ably compete in such schools. I know your GPA in the 4 point scale will just land at 3.0/4.0 and in most schools in the US, that is sufficient for an MSc or direct PhD (if you really want to be sure you would get funded). Here is a list of schools that your GRE is better than their averages. You can continue your correspondences with their grad advisors if they have what you are looking for;

UNewMexico, Dayton, Arlington, Witchita State, UT Health Science Centre, Wayne State, Texas San Antonio, Lamar Uni, Morgan State, Prairie View A&M.

Are you insinuating a good GRE score is the basis for getting full funding?

TOEFL is compulsory for some schools but not for others. The merits of sitting for it include the chance of getting a TA. Schools like to use the speaking score to guage if someone might be a good TA (amongst other things ofcourse).

An overall strong TOEFL score can make up for a weak V score in the GRE as well. In summary, TOEFL bolsters the application and could tip the scale when both candidates are neck and neck.

Funding simply implies; We really want you to come to our school to study and contribute. We see value in you and feel you would add something special to our program and school by extension. We don't want to lose you to another school. Please, pick us.

Now the question you should ask yourself is, what factors can make any school come to that conclusion about someone?

That is what I am insinuating. smiley
