It's Not Government's Role To Provide Jobs -Presidency Drops Bombshell by Dreyxam: 12:17am On Nov 30, 2017 |
Nigeria’s Senior Special Assistant to the President on Industry, Trade and Investment, Olajumoke Omoniyi Oduwole has said it is not the government’s obligation to provide jobs for the masses. Speaking in an interview with Newsroom, Oduwole made known that President Buhari’s administration is not obliged to provide jobs. https://newsroom.ng/presidency-drops-bombshell-says-government-is-not-obliged-to-provide-jobs/ In a quest to affirm her statement, Oduwole stressed that the role of the government is to create an enabling business environment for everybody to thrive. Disregarding claims that it is the government’s failure to provide jobs is why entrepreneurship studies in tertiary institutions are compulsory, Oduwole said the government is not the major driver of the economy. Her words; “Entrepreneurship is actually global best practice. In the US, we have so many entrepreneurs and that is how it is everywhere around the world. The government only employ a small amount of people. The private sector is the driver of any economy, it is not the government. “What the government is obliged to do is to make sure there are regulations, laws, amongst other things to make business thrive in the country.” Cc lalasticlala Mynd44 2 Likes 3 Shares

True, the governments job is to provide an enabling environment; by making the economy look attracktive to investor, and also reducing the intrest rates to favour business operations in the system e.t.c. but my question is this: how far has this government achieved this? Is their a noticeable increase in NSE from 2014-2017. although i'll give a kudos to this government, for reducing the cost of registering a business this year. The new youwin project is also a commendable project but I must falter the Npower initiative because this doesn't support growth and cannot be termed as a longtime project I was quite impressed tho with the Npower agro et al but really after the Npower how does the government intends to establish this youths enough of all this propaganda of much talk and little impact. sometimes it doesn't hurt to accept the fact that you don't know how to run a business, by seeking for help. Moreover there's no ego in learning from people that have ran such kind of ventures. our politics needs to look beyound party affiliation, and start honoring inteligence beyound religious backgrond/political party. Party doesn't build a nation, is the people that build. in other news FTC enhen... 1 Like |

She is right, it's not the government's role to provide jobs, rather the government's role is to provide an enabling environment for business to thrive and that is something that it has not done. 1) It's very difficult for small businesses to thrive if they don't have uninterrupted power supply. 2) It's very difficult for industries to thrive when one of the country's main industrial areas (Apapa) is overwhelmed by traffic gridlock and neither goods nor workers can easily move in or out of the area. 3) It's very difficult for agricultural businesses to thrive when farmers are scared that their crops will be eaten and farmland trampled by herds of cattle. It is also very difficult for agricultural businesses to thrive when herdsmen are afraid that their cattle will be stolen or killed. 4) It is difficult for businesses to thrive when foreigners are scared to invest in many parts of Nigeria because they are afraid that they will be kidnapped or killed. 5) It is difficult for businesses to thrive when it is difficult to move goods across the country. The railway system is not yet efficient and you have to move goods across the country by road. You also need to pay various thugs on the road, including uniformed thugs, before you can move your goods to many parts of the country and you also need to navigate over many bad federal highways. 24 Likes 7 Shares |

I agree. It is the job of government to provide enabling environment for job creators and the govt is performing poorly. Govt is suppose to provide/assure us of power, security, roads, protective regulation and policies but we all know the story with these things. 3 Likes |

Yes,I agree with her. It's not the duty of this government to provide jobs. It's their duty make millions lose their jobs. It's not their duty to enact good economic policies. It's not their duty to provide stable power supply (the major driver of industries). It's not their duty to strengthen government institutions. It's their duty to provide security. It's not their duty to improve the ease of doing business. It's not their duty to reduced the cost of government. It's not their duty to reduce recurrent expenditures and increase capital expenditures. But, It's their duty to spend more than 1 billion naira for Buhari and Osibanjo to travel (are they going to space?) It's their duty to spend 17 million naira on cutleries. She has only educate the ignorant who refuse to update themselves with the truth. Even as this government understand it isn't its duty to provide jobs one can say it has done more than any other in empowering its young ones with Npower which has given hope and stipends to its people. There would always be the lazy and ignorant amongst us. 2 Likes 1 Share |

this administration is a study in contradiction. during elections, they promised to PROVIDE millions of jobs... they didn't say they will create an enabling environment for jobs to be created... but fine, its not government's responsibility to give actual jobs, but why then spend billions on the N-Power programmes? why not use the billions spent on the N-Power programme to create an enabling environment so that the present political touts who sit their behinds at home or run around with politicians while collecting free money are told to look for jobs in the so called enabling environment created by this administration? nitwits... 1 Like |

GavelSlam: NPower is mostly free money for the touts of APC politicians. most of the beneficiaries are political miscreants who refuse to do a honest day job. so that welfare crap is dead on arrival. every country employs a certain percentage of their employable population. some go as high as 40% some as low as 8%... it depends... the main issue is not whether the present position of government is right or wrong, it is about being held accountable for your promises & what efforts have been made to match actions to words... within 8 months of this administration, close to 4m 'good' jobs were lost... that is close to 4m people thrown into the labour market due to confused policies of this government. the same government starts giving handouts to less than 200,000 people who should be gainfully employed in better organisations & some people call it an achievement? that's robbing peter, moses, Aaron, job, Methuselah, Adam & Silas just to pay Paul... 2 Likes |
