Ian Darke is picking Nigeria to come last in Group D, behind Iceland! Stupid man, that's why I almost got him fired from ESPN after he criticized African (Ghanaian) fans for booing Uruguay in South Africa 2010. Anyway, he's going to eat his own words! O pari |

TheGoodJoe: You're still taking about that friendly game? Look, we must be careful oh otherwise 2002 will repeat itself all over again. Recall in 2002, we massaged our egos about going to the world cup with the youngest team. Even before the world cup, the team broke the Irish jinx by becoming the first team to defeat Ireland in Dublin for over 20 years if I recall, solid game against Paraguay with the infamous Ogbeche bicycle kick and a couple of other victories against Scotland and one other team. We basically played the world cup before the world cup. Unfortunately, when the main event came up, we learnt the hard lesson at the mundial. I mean, we nearly lost 3 games on the spin. Make no mistake about it, the Argentina game is now in the dust bin of history. I get livid that we still make songs and dance out of the Atlanta 96 fame. We cannot keep stroking ourselves with that result. We must strive to get better thank goodness Gernot Rohr recognised this by not limiting his search within a particular circle. I laughed when you made reference some pages back about Martins probably holding the team back due to a lack of pace. I laughed because just a fee years back, Martins was rated the top 2-3 fastest player in the world. You could say he's aged and the speed has dropped but I tell you after watching him sprint past 3 defenders in gear 2, to score last week I knew the guy still has it. Also, I must bring to your attention the case of Justin Gatlin. You do realise this guy, the current world 100 meters champion is 35yr old, a good 2 years older than Martins. This guy can sprint past any teenage athlete you throw his way. This should tell you it's not about age but ability. If you stick your head out that Victor Moses will outpace a 33yr old Obafemi Martins, you will wake up one morning and discover you're a dead man. 10 Likes |

If Rohr selects Martins for the WC those who have been against oldies, are you going to commit suicide? make we let this matter rest either way it goes. At the end of the day let's hope Rohr picks the right players whether young, oyibo, homebased, old, EPL based, Indonesian based, Warri based etc to prosecute his match plan. And that the players play their best as a unit every match. We are behind the team regardless, and we cannot influence Rohr's decision just as we can't influence his pay. goldfish80: 4 Likes 1 Share |

safarigirl: When Martins waa about same age as Dessers, Dennis and Kayode, he already had the world at his feet and considered a veteran and the most important striker for the Super Eagles. I'm not a psychic, so I can't say what will happen 2 months from now but, going by what I saw from Martins last week. The speed which he got past those defenders, shot from outside the box and the back flip celebrations. I can beat my chest and tell you that guy is in top physical condition. Even in better physical condition than Klose (same age) was at the last world cup,I dare say. The man could be an asset to this team going forward next year, period. 2 Likes |

Because they are neutral and not Nigerians. Only Nigerians are giving Nigeria a chance and maybe 1 out of every 500k Neutrals are also giving Nigeria a chance. FOX panelists are correct in what they are saying. Looking at the pedigree of the players in each teams, it's only natural they say the truth which is that Croatia have a better pedigree. Apart from Moses and too some extent Iwobi (who's appearance for Arsenal is somewhat erratic), what other big name players do we have? But compare Croatia players. I know this is a Nigerian forum but let's not bash neutrals for saying the truth. I as a Nigerian had to dig deep to prove to some colleagues at work that Nigeria would qualify. They prolly thought I was on drugs. We only Nigerian players cos we are Nigerians. Let's be realistic sometimes. To the actual draw itself, I'd say we have a good chance. We musn't come out of that Croatia game with 0 points. A draw could do. Then we have to/must beat Iceland and hope for anything against Argentina. Cos even Croatia can beat Argentina. I just hope Iceland don't come and pull a Senegal or Ghana in our group by actually performing in their 1st WC. I fear despised opponents, cos they are the most dangerous. I trust we'd be very prepared cos we have a coach that pays attention to details. Heard his post-draw analysis and I knew the bobo was ready. Icon79: 1 Like |

If you actually watched the draw and saw their positions then there's no irregularity. All group positions were drawn. And all groups are following the same pattern of P1 vs P2, then P1 vs P3, ending with P1 vs P4. P1 Russia and P2 Saudi Arabia. So what's the irregularity? Certitude: |

Best comment. We think the niggas playing care about 1st or second position. They just wanna get outta the group and from there anything can happen. What if Denmark tops group C? In 2013 Nations cup, We all felt sad coming 2nd to play CIV, the rest they say is history. Knockout games are very different from group games and little things like 1st to score can decisively define the outcome for the rest of the game. I bet everyone forgot Emenike scored vs France in 2014. If that goal had mistakenly stood, believe me, that game could have been very different for france. I don't fear any foe in knockout rounds. My own is just sha qualify. Icon79: 2 Likes |

So fine-tuning means when you have no other attacking options, you bench your only available attacker to play a MF in attack repeatedly? Wehdone sir! Pep has/would never rate Iheanacho in his life. Iheanacho dorsnbt fit his philosophy. Sorry to tell you this if Nacho were still in City and all their attackers and wingers/attackers are injured except Nacho, guess what Pep would do? He'd promote Foden and play him instead of Nacho. I don't know how hard it is to see that Pep never wanted Iheanacho? Truth is bitter, but it's still the truth no matter what and how hard it's tried to be disproven. TheGoodJoe: 1 Like |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Dedebanky85: 3:11am On Dec 02, 2017 |
Just to add Guardiola never builds his team for only one person to be the clear highest goalscorer. He builds a mobile team that you could find about 3 to 4 players almost on equal goals. So that whole shoot and score stats that Iheanacho was bragging about was just BS to Guardiola cos he knows anyone can score in his team with his footballing ideology. He sets out to look for players that can fit into his fooitballung philosophy which our dear Iheanacho falls way outside that requirement. He always slowed their game down, gave the ball away needlessly etc. If you noticed, Iheanacho hardly received passes from teammates at some point depending on his position on the field. Their expectation was that he'd lose it almost immediately. He needs to change his game style.... I also saw where you recommended that he goes to Valencia. Please thats the worst place he should go. The watch word of LaLiga is ball control and with what Iheanacho is displaying he won't even make it past the trainings. The first thing he needs to put extra hour into is his ball control. Afterwards, his stamina and game involvement. He seems too lost in games. If he works on these 3 things he'd be almost unplayable. TheGoodJoe: |

my personal thoughts about Martin's-even at his imperial best at club level playing in Europe, he never dazzled in the national team (his performances were average). He had his chances between 2005 to 2010 and I must say he never translated his club form to the national team, the reason some people aren't keen to see him recalled. Aiyegbeni's case is quite similar. surprised people aren't clamouring for him for come out of retirement since he has the best goal stats for a Nigerian in the EPL. 5 Likes |

Dedebanky85: I am not crazy about playing time. I am more interested in training time. First of all, with hardwork, Iheanacho would fit into Guardiola's system. It takes a lot of hardwork and determination. Look at how hard Mangala is working. He is getting very little playing time but you can see the effect of his hard work. He is running faster, look fitter and better on the ball in terms of knowing the right channels to pass the ball through. If Mangala continues like this, by next year, his quality will be far better and an asset to any club that secures his signature. I doubt the problem Iheanacho had with City has to do with ball control or players scared to pass to him because he will miscontrol the ball. I think it was down to off the ball movement, finding spaces in the field, getting there and passing to another space. His movement was not right but with hardwork and training, Nacho would improve in that. When I say go to Valencia, I am talking about being in a similar challenging environment that will challenge him to learn the same complex method, adapt to it and have chances to show his worth with the chances created. |

Dedebanky85: Pep played midfielders in the forward role ahead of Iheanacho because they grasped his philosophy earlier. It is a very complex system and it takes time to get it. Not because Guardiola does not rate Nacho but he clearly had points he wanted Iheanacho to improve on. He made it public and with hard work, Nacho would have gotten it right. After that, he would have become an asset to the team. |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by TheGoodJoe(m): 4:46am On Dec 02, 2017 |
goldfish80: I am not saying Martins is slow but use the term intensity. He has lost speed and is no more the speed demon of the past. However, the demand of the system we currently play rely more on constant running than a sprint of few yards. The players need to press when the opposing side are building up play and track back to support the team when under attack, attack with pace when we are counter attacking. Not a slight on Martins but I doubt he can meet up with the intensity of our play. Argentina is done and dusted but it shows the potential of our young players. As I said, the next top quality friendly will determined how prepared we are. We were not prepared in 2002. Playing top friendly games would have exposed the weakness of that team. 1 Like |

I share in this optimism too. A game isn't played until it's done and dusted Nigeria should make the QF or even the SF #SoarEaglesSoar #GwG And in all honesty, Argentina won't qualify from this group. Rohr will need to see the footages of the European Qualifiers to the WC as they have already sized themselves up and other matches between that time. Apart from Germany, Spain and maybe Portugal, the rest are just overrated average teams that benefitted from good rankings. 1 Like

June is very close by no room for time wasting if we want to go far in the WC We must give this WC our best shot We must get our tactics right on point and the boys must be in perfect mind condition and physically fit We must bear in mind that other teams in our group will not sleep either I wish the SE the very best in Russia 3 Likes |

goldfish80:Let him be invited. That's all. We don't need to drag this issue much. If Martins still has the ability to perform at the highest levels the Coach will surely pick him. Our arguments on whether to call or not to call Martins sometimes gets too personal. Some(not you though) do not embrace the team because Martins and others have not been invited. That to me is just too annoyingly partisan. Some seem to run down the team just because some players they prefer are not in the team. Question is if this young guns had not shown hunger, determination, commitment and discipline to get us through to Russia we would not be here talking of WC not to talk of our preferred players. Again others have set a barbed wire fence against the recall of Martins. That too is petty. I once argued strenuously against his invitation but I've since re-evaluated my position. I now say let him be invited. Not because of experience per se, not because the young lads cannot deliver but simply because one cannot argue against performance. If he performs I think the team stands to be all the better for his inclusion. There's therefore no need to rubbish Iheanacho just because we want to see Martins in the team or rubbish Martins just because he's 33. Performance, quality, contributing to our objectives are what counts now. Not barren superficial considerations. So enough of Martins is not good, Ebuehi is not good, Iheanacho is not good, Idowu is not good, Rohr is not good. It's time to rally behind the team. Surely we must call out the team's weaknesses but let's do it as BELIEVERS not as people who do not believe in the team and fervently expect the team to fail just for no other reason than to gloat and say 'Shebi I tell una'. Our thinking must now go beyond the personal, we are thinking not just national glory but continental and global glory. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

TheGoodJoe:When you talk about speed, intensity, determination, you talk about Martins. The guy is a fiercely competitive guy. You cannot say he won't be able to keep up with the pace of the game just by assumption using his age as a yardstick. By the way, it's almost a given that he won't start but he would be an impact sub, a reliable goalscorer. I dare say, Kelechi has nothing on him when the comes to intensity, speed and grit. Do you think Kelechi can pull off that goal he scored last week? Talking about 2002, maybe you it escaped you that Paraguay were actually a seeded team in that world cup. They were ranked no8 in the world. You cannot say the friendly was not high profile enough. That Paraguay team were what Chile is currently. The Irish friendly was another high profile game especially when they never lost in that stadium in 100 games. |
