Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah expects Nigeria and Senegal to make Africa proud at 2018 World Cup

Nigeria Super Eagles

Ghana Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah expects Nigeria and Senegal to be the torch bearers of the African contingent at the 2018 World Cup in Russian claiming the two can make Africa proud.

African countries have struggled to go beyond the quarter final stage of the World Cup with Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana, all falling out at that stage.

But following the groupings, the Ghana trainer who was at the GTV and Kwese TV launch of the 2018 World Cup told Ghanasoccernet.com that the two West African countries at the tournament will lead the way to go beyond the quarter final stage.

Though skeptical about an African country winning the World Cup, Kwasi Appiah was optimistic Senegal and Nigeria will travel beyond quarter finals.

"Most of the African countries at the World Cup have got very young squads. And I believe they can surprise many at the tournament," Kwasi Appiah told Ghanasoccernet.com

"Nigeria and Senegal are doing well with young players who want to achieve something.

"They only need the right mentality for the tournament and they can cause a surprise," he added.

Nigeria will start their campaign in Group D with Argentina, Croatia and Iceland while Senegal start their journey in Group H with Poland, Columbia and Japan.

I just look at them as Forwards... I don't really differentiate into striker, winger or supporting striker.

We're taking seven forwards:

Victor Moses
Iwobi
Kelechi
Ighalo
Musa
Moses Simon.....

The contenders for the last spot are:

(In the System)
Kayode
Nwakaeme
Onyekuru

(Not In The System, Hoping To Crash In)

Martins
Onuachu
Bonaventure
Dessers

It's all forwards
Then let's invite them to camp. I'm fine with whoever the Coach picks.

A case for Obafemi though. At Henry's age, he was bossing in the Champions League. I can never forget how he messed up Maldini and Nesta that year at the San Siro. Maldini said he was the most difficult player he ever encountered.

The memory of that goal made me dig out his time at Inter Milan. He was so exciting to watch as a teenager. You will like to watch this...

But wait o... I just can't believe all the video am seeing around with Martins scoring up and down even not only here even on twitter and IG... Some players self dey pull the video forward...

My question... Where re these videos during qualifiers?

Is because we qualified for WC.?

Definitely Martins get strong hold with massive influence and it is really working for him..

If he made 23 man list is gonna be painful cos his reaping where he did not sow...

But his inclusion won't bad either with his current form, just hope he maintains it.
If Martins is invited and he makes the cut I don't think it would be bad. Thing is it's Nwakaeme whose on field contribution amounts to zilch who'd most likely lose out to Martins. It's all probabilities though.

I hope our young players borrow a leaf from Lingaard. Today was a demonstration of how a player not getting regular time can make an impact when he gets his chances. This was a demonstration of hardwork and perseverance.

The most important thing is the player working hard to improve his attributes. When the chances come, he will stand out from the pack.

Our players who are not playing regularly in their club sides should cultivate the habit of going the extra mile to improve themselves.

I Believe Our Time Has Come – Everton Star Oozing Confidence Over World Cup Success

Everton forward Henry Onyekuru is confident of making a splash at next summer's World Cup with Nigeria and says his country should fear no one.

The Super Eagles have been drawn alongside Argentina, Iceland and Croatia in Group D in Russia, and excitement is now building amongst the country's players ahead of the showpiece event.

Onyekuru, who is under contract with Everton but on loan in Belgium with Anderlecht, is aiming to make his mark in Russia and does not believe Nigeria should fear anyone.

"We are the Super Eagles and we do not fear any team", Onyekuru told AOI Football.

www.nairaland.com/attachments/6351276_onyekuru_jpeg530ef895089f1ec9b7bd377ef329b67a

"I am really looking forward to playing against the very best teams in the world. The World Cup is a great event where only the best teams and playes will be present", he added.

And Onyekuru expressed his belief that the time could well have come for Nigeria to conquer the world, insisting that it is national pride driving the Super Eagles and not financial gain.

"Nigeria has an excellent football history. I believe that our time has come to conquer the football world", the Everton contracted star said.

"Money is not the most important thing for us. Each player is just proud to represent his country and motivated to perform strongly."

Just 20 years old, Onyekuru has scored seven goals in 15 Belgian top flight games so far this season for Anderlecht and could announce himself to the world next summer.

Big shout out to Iwobi. Even though his side lost, he showed dedication and worked hard to influence the game. He made a lot of right decisions with his passes and showed his depth in playing multiple roles. Very impressive.

lol wiltord was a winger, but then arsenal played the 4-4-2 formation with Henry and either Kanu or bergkamp occasionally Wiltord or ljunberg, because you see Wiltord been played as a striker occasionally doesn't mean he's not a winger even in the clip you posted you'll see him supplying passes to Kanu from the wings. and I still stand by my point, Kanu doesn't come close to Bergkamp.

Wiltord played in the wings but at Arsenal he played a lot as a striker. You were wrong saying Wiltord was not a striker. Finito.

Bergkamp had a good run to show his worth while Kanu dealt with challenges and still made an impact. As I showed you that clip, there were things Kanu could do that I doubt Bergkamp could attempt.

Bergkamp was a great player but saying Kanu does not come close, unless based on his limited chances, ability wise, Kanu was definitely close to Bergkamp.

NIGERIA EYE SHOCK WIN AFTER ARGENTINA WORLD CUP DRAW

www.nairaland.com/attachments/6351359_rohr_jpegb71298871d8ebe0c941230b356221ccf

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr said he hopes to spring a surprise after drawing Argentina in the 2018 World Cup on Friday -- the two-time champions they sensationally beat 4-2 in a friendly last month.

Making their sixth appearance in the showpiece competition, Nigeria are bringing their most inexperienced squad ever to Russia next year.

"This is the youngest team in Nigeria's history in the World Cup. We have the youngest team of the 32 teams here. So we have to learn," German coach Rohr said after also drawing Iceland and Croatia in a tricky Group D.

"This is a difficult group, but I think we can spring a surprise."

Nigeria clawed their way back from a 2-0 deficit to claim a stunning friendly win over Argentina at the Krasnodar Stadium in Russia on November 14.

Argentina did not have superstar Lionel Messi last month.

"But we also played without Victor Moses," Rohr said in reference to the talented Chelsea winger.

Nigeria have shown much promise since making their World Cup debut at the 1994 competition in the United States.

They fought hard before falling to Argentina 2-1 in their debut finals, winning plaudits for bringing sub-Saharan African flare to the game.

Their 1994 bow may also have been their most memorable, ending in a 2-1 extra-time last-16 defeat by Roberto Baggio's Italy, who went on to lose the final to Brazil on penalties.

Nigeria have never reached the quarter-finals and lost 3-2 to Argentina in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, when they were beaten by France in the last 16.

Rohr said their toughest match will be against Croatia on June 16 in Kaliningrad, because it will be Nigeria's opener.

"The first game is always the most difficult," he added.

He also attributed Nigeria's failure to fully fulfil the promise others saw in them to a lack of discipline that he intended to fix.

"I believe that African players have the talent, they have the physical and technical possibilities, but what they are missing is organisation, what they are missing is discipline," said Rohr, who has also coached Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso.

I wont be surprised if he's dropped. Truth is he's not really been impressive since the Match against Algeria. Some say it's because he ought not to be played as an AM but what then does versatility mean? Against Algeria he was lost. In any case it's up to him to stake a claim for a place in the final 23 cos I believe he would make the initial cut before the pruning down to 23

How come Martins didn't make Keshi's watery team and there was no outcry. Was he injured then?

Long ball. Keshi relied a lot on long balls. That was why a lot of the old guns hardly made it. From Osaze, Martins and K. Uche. Apart from Musa, Keshi relied on big players to lead his attack. From Emenike, Ideye, Shola Ameobi, Bright Dike, to some extent Osaguona and Uchebo.

Martins would hardly fit into that system unless he played on the wings.

This is exactly the reason why national coaches may not look at the performance of a player under a previous national coach. Most look at their recent club form to see if what they give is what they are looking to add to their team. It's always the fans that cry about past national performances. As long as the player is still performing, he always has a chance to get another look, and that's if the current coach likes what he sees.

they think form last forever and players don't grow old....may be they think he is Caleb of the Bible...

I do not even consider the MLS a good Guage to judge talents.

Look at how good Jack Harrison of New York City FC looks in the MLS. However, he is not near a look in by the English senior National team.

You know my stance. I don't think age, where you play or status in the team should be a final criteria for selection. I prefer a tight monitoring or players, select the best punch. Preferred target number due to time for preparation is 60. Screen closely and select the very best.

Martins might be good enough for the team or he may not be. Screening looks the best option to me. The likes of Dessers and co would definitely make the list for the camp program. Same goes for the likes of Otigba, Onyedinma and Aluko.

Let the very best rule. Although I believe majority of the current group will make the cut, there may be some surprises. We can never tell.

injury prone or not. Joel Ovi is not trying to be first choice...he is being called as back-up, emphasis on the word BACK-UP to Mikel, so, except something foes wrong with Mikel, he will only come in as a sub here and there.

What is the likelihood of him getting injured in such appearances?
