samnaija: lol, na so u understand now why we were sceptical of ur 3 to 5mins time frame. your heater appears a lil strange to hv 1500w heating element, most heaters that size only hv 1kw and lower heating element. its the 50L ariston that comes with 1500w elemnt..and that usually lasts 2 to 3 days..if used frugally by 2 or 3 individuals. i still think hving a separate batt n solar array is a more expensive alternative. if i have a 5kva inverter, and dont hv the roof space for the overhead solar heater..i would go with using the same bank..but adapting timer switches to each water heater.-- shudnt be a big deal...almost same as using the inverter to iron for 45mins [1 tank] MEANWHILE..THE HAZY WEATHER IS BACK WITH a vengeance, how is your harvest?..being that its cooler..am thinking harvest shudnt suffer less than 25% reduction for mono panels..if any 1 Like |

samnaija: Nothing special. The 4 AC's are inverter Ac's ( 1 LG 22,000 BTU , 1 LG 18000 BTU , 2 x diaking 18000 BTU) - On power save mode they consume less than 700 watt ( sometimes 300 watt) each - the AC's are power controlled by a cheap aliexpress regulator so if switched on accidentally in turbo mode ( 2.5 KW each) the power controller gives audible alarm and after 60 sec switches off the power to teh socket The whole setup plus my microwave + 1.5 kW water heater is connected to 2x 5 KVA Ipower on 400 AH battery bank with 2.5 KW solar PV and 7.5 KVA DG ( 3 phase 50 amp 48 battery charger) The Ipower are controlled by a software ICC which changes them to Solar mode between 9 am and 4 pm- If the SOC drops below 47 V DC the ipower come out of solar mode and change to Nepa The DG comes on if the SOC drops below 70 % and switches off automatically. ( or 12 pm in the night even if they are not full) This is mainly useful in the night if there is the power failure . The rest of the house is on seprate 5 KW inverter +lithium so I am not worried if the DG does not start and the batteries are fully depleted in the night as I can attend to them if required in the morning This setup allows me to use the parlour Ac's in the daytime directly on the PV panels ( or bedroom at weekends and on batteries or DG in the night I have used 31 ltrs of Diesel since 1st Aug till date - including the maintenance run once every 2 weeks . 3 Likes |

This has all the makings of a 'perpetual motion machine'. A fabulous promise akin to the philosopher's stone - it sounds too good to be true - an electricity generator that requires no fuel to run but starts off from a battery and promptly recharges the battery from the energy the battery itself created. The only problem is that the laws of physics will ultimately catch up - since energy conversion is not 100% efficient, the losses due to heat and other inefficiencies must be made up for somehow from an external source else the system will come to a grinding halt. I remember posting something like that once - a Quantum generator using Si-Graphite cells - experts in the US are still undecided whether its a scam or a technology that holds real promise Fingers crossed and we will see how this "pioneer technology" turns out in real life. kiekie1: |

pranil:Hi. I am coming home shortly to commence the finishing of a flat roof duplex, part of which is a Axion concrete roof terrace. Abdulwastecx provided the overall design and served as consultant for the frame phase. He may, subject to negotiation, handle the overall finishing work. One of the critical needs is to assure reasonable electricity supply by including properly designed solar solutions as part of a harmonized electrical plan finishing. Accordingly, I have for a while followed this thread and GeorgeD1, you, and many other trailblazers. I have also read as extensively as a layman could about the rapidly evolving trends like Lithium ion batteries and AC coupling (with zero grid feedback) vs DC coupling as part of ESS. I have decided on using the roof top solar water heater, alike GeorgeD1, as guided by responses to my earlier inquiries here. I have read over your BYD storage implementation and your many other “thinking out of the box” solutions. On your trail, I have gotten to learn more about BYD, Tesla, etc High vs Low volatage lithium batteries and the supporting respective inverters. Subject to our Nigerian contextual limitations, I will like to: 1. Build an Ac Coupled system, 2. Use Fronius solar inverter for PV DC to AC string inversion 3. Use Fronius Smart meter as part of the monitoring and bridge to the grid 4. Use Victron Multi or Quattro, SMS Sunny Storage (higher capacity models due shortly) for the battery charger/ inverter 5. Use the BYD High Voltage Lithium box 6. Until Nigeria, like Ghana recently did, approves grid feedback, implement an zero feedback island that ensures uninterrupted PV tapping, even if I have to include a parallel CC feed to battery inverter, as per the combined AC/DC Coupling permissible for Victron name ESS. Towards, firming my expectations before engaging one of our reputable designers/installers, I would greatly appreciate an opportunity to discuss the above and other wants vs needs and methods issues with you. Your can reach me on WhatsApp: 678-764-4535 Thanks. 3 Likes

Good afternoon house. I finally got the Magnum PT-100 charge controller with the remote monitor ME-ARC50. However, the monitor can only be used with a Magnum inverter connected to the charge controller. Please has anyone found a workaround to this in the house? Right now I am only able to view PV voltage, PV power, charge voltage and current. Monitor will be needed to view logging data. |

Gonna start working on my portable air conditioner build using a computer radiator, aquarium pump, tubing, high CFM cpu fan... Will update the house when the parts come in. The whole thing should run on 8 watts or less, but obviously the issue is getting ice. However you can get ice from a freezer located in a separate room from the room you wish to cool. Don't think this would be sufficient to drop the temps down in a typical room, but the output air of about 18-22 degrees celcius, should make for a much better personal cooler than a normal fan. Still drawing up designs and getting stomped on a way to deal with the condensation that will inevitably be produced by the radiator, but we will see how it goes. Unlike swamp coolers or evaporative coolers, i will be making use of the radiator for heat exchange so as to keep the air from contacting the ice, thereby adding more humidity to the room as opposed to removing the humidity. As the radiator gets cool, the ambient room air passing accross it should condense, thereby removing room humidity and providing cool dry air. Will keep y'all posted. Definitely 8 watts if much better than a 1,200 watt air conditioner. |

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by NoMoreTrolling: 10:35am On Dec 15, 2017 |
Barezzi: lol, you got jokes right seriously though, ice has been used for years for refrigeration and is still being used in some buildings as chillers through pipes to heat exchangers. obviously, you can't just leave a fridge open as you would still be generating heat through the coils at the back. However, you can move heat around, which is exactly what I'm trying to do. We already have a hot room in the house, the kitchen. In it, there are 3 deep/chest freezers and those guys are already running round the clock, so freezing 1 gallon bottles shouldn't really be a problem. You can then use that ice in your portable air conditioner to cool another room, or more likely, as a very chilly spot cooler. |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by NoMoreTrolling: 10:48am On Dec 15, 2017 |
Dam5reey: Don't follow 90% of youtube builds, as those simply blow air over ice, causing the exiting air to be cool, but very very moist, whereas a traditional air conditioner cools the air and removes the humidity in the air as well. The result from an air conditioner should be cool, dry air, not cool moist air, as the moist air would again heat up really quick, causing heat soaks and an overall uncomfortable feeling. It's like running a swamp cooler/evaporative coolers in an already humid environment, they don't work. I had one before and boy was it humid. There are only 1 or 2 builds on youtube that completely isolate the ice from the air, that way, the ice water acts as a refrigerant. Every air conditioner has an evaporative coil/heat exchanger that contains cool low pressure refrigerant. so instead of the refrigerant, you'd be using ice water which should run at temps under 10 degrees Celsius. Air flow through the heat exchanger is never 100% efficient, so there would be about a 10 degree rise in exiting air temp, compared to the coil temp. Still if coil temp is say 8 degrees, exiting air should be around 18 degrees, which would be nice and chilly if placed by ur bedside, or your office desk. There are already some commercial products coming out that make use of a heat exchanger/radiator, with plumbing for the ice water, like the icybreeze. however these are too expensive in my opinion. |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by makavele: 11:33am On Dec 15, 2017 |
As a shortcut; you could do the usual Youtube "air over ice" method; that's gonna add a lot of humidity to the room. Then get a standby dehumidifier to remove the humidity from the room. You could even use your A/C as one (the compressor wont kick in). Saves time and energy, IMO |
