Why Atiku May Never Be Nigerian President - Shettima.

Like I have repeatedly said in previous interviews since 2015, it is someone that has no regard for history that loses sleep over becoming Nigeria’s President because history doesn’t favour anybody with a desperate aspiration to become Nigeria’s President.

I am a student of history. As I have cited before now in published interviews, from 1979 to date, nobody with desperate aspiration for the presidency has ever succeeded in getting to that seat.

President Shagari never aspired to be President; he was invited to contest without aspiration in 1979. President Obasanjo was even in prison when he was invited to contest without aspiration in 1999.

In 2007, powerful people that included influential governors aspired by then, Gov. Umaru Musa Yar’adua, who was never in contention was invited to contest without aspiration. President Jonathan, who eventually succeeded Yar’adua, was also not in contention to become Vice President in 2007 but he made it to the post.

Despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s overwhelming grassroots support, he failed to win the presidential elections when he wanted to become President in 2003, 2007 and 2011 until such a time when the seat wanted him.

He had retired from politics but was recalled from retirement to contest the 2015 elections and he won. I am not saying people have no right to aspire for the position or those who aspire are not good for the country. I am talking about history as someone who doesn’t joke with history.

In fact, even the position of Vice President, if you go back to history, all those who became Vice Presidents in Nigeria never aspired to the position from the onset. Chief Alex Ekwueme didn’t aspire to be Shagari’s Vice President from the onset ahead of the 1979 elections.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar aspired to be Governor of Adamawa State in 1999, he won the election before he was called to become Obasanjo’s running mate in 1999. Gov. Goodluck Jonathan was probably aspiring to seek election for the Bayelsa Governorship in 2007 when he was invited to be late Yar’Adua’s running mate.

Architect Namadi Sambo didn’t aspire to be Vice President since he couldn’t have known Yar’adua was going to die. Professor Yemi Osinbajo was never in contention for the seat of Vice President before he was invited to serve.

So, if history is anything to go by, it doesn’t favour desperation for Nigeria’s Presidency. The seat of Nigeria’s Presidency sought for its occupants; those who eventually got to occupy the seat hardly sought for it. This is based on history.

Some people don’t have to follow history but I am a student of history and I do not disregard history. We have a sitting President and if we are to once again go back to history, history favours his re-election. From 1979 to date, we have had seven presidential elections out of which incumbents won re-election in 1983, 2003 and 2011.

It was only on one occasion that an incumbent failed to win re-election. So, historical records still favour the incumbent President Buhari’s re-election. What we should do is to support him to continue his good works of fighting Boko Haram, resettling IDPs, rebuilding destroyed towns, fighting corruption, creating fiscal discipline and repositioning our country.

He is very capable of transforming this country and he has paid his dues and earned a reputation that is equal to none in Nigeria.

By Kashim Shettima, the Governor of Borno State.

This article is interesting, because it is actually based on cogent research. However, though history may not favour a blind desperation to the 'throne', it certainly is in support of the rich and corrupt, a category under which Alh. Atiku firmly sits.

He's like 99% right BUT Buhari contesting 4x shows desperation.

Atiku is very very unlikely to be President. If i were him, would just be bankrolling elections and playing Godfather with the profits

Buhari is actually not desperate. It is politicians around him that has come to realise that they need Buhari to do a 2nd term to balance things out and ensure an APC victory.

If APC puts forward another person apart from Buhari, they may actually lose. No other person can command the loyalty and votes in the North like Buhari.

Putting it in mind that PDP is firmly rooted in the SS/SE. APC needs a block Northern vote to counter this PDP strong areas of SS/SE, and it's only Buhari that can deliver that in the North.

If APC present any other Northerner, their Northern votes will be shared with the Northern candidate of the PDP. And the PDP stronghold of SS/SE may deliver victory to the PDP.

APC can only win the 2019 election with Buhari as their candidate.

A good research and pedagogically explained, but there are element of sentimental and hatred approach to the issues. What good for geese is good for gander. In my own opinion if the theory or history can favour our current president, the pendulum can swing in favour of Atiku. But I doubt it and support the history which says a desperate desperado politician like Atiku can not be a Nigeria president. Fayose,Rochas,Saraki, shekarau, kwankwoso ara on course of history. Let u wait and see.

If these your political permutations are anything to go by,then Buhari should not have contested the presidency for a record three failed times until Tinubu repackaged him as a "born again"democrat. 2019 will never be like 2015 as Nigerians are more politically conscious now than ever even in the rural areas.
Thanks to the widespread pain, hunger, hardship and deaths induced as a results of the super-cluelessness of a president of Buhari's calibre.

They can field Fashola if Osinbajo is unwilling for a better shot at it.

Any Yoruba man that doesn't learn from Ibo + GEJ and Ibo + Wike sagas is very stupid.

It's very open and obvious that given the position, Ibos will try to bury Yorubas out of jealousy, envy and hatred.

Ibos have never meant well for Yorubas, while Yorubas like FFK, Fayose, Saraki, Afenifere etc continues to speak out for Ibos. This has to stop and well-meaning Yorubas have to stop these fools from supporting people who perceive Yorubas as enemies.

Buhari has nothing to offer Nigeria.
However, PDP has nothing to offer SW too. SW still has something to gain from APC.
Therefore, we will pour our energy to vote APC and to survive politically.

SW PDP needs to scrap itself and start afresh. Create a regional party that focuses on the SW regional interest. They can eventual branch nationwide. But PDP has nothing to offer the SW. Yorubas are brilliant, persistent and survivors. We will survive this.

PDP belongs to Wike and Ibos. Let's see what they do with it.

Is it only SE that voted at the PDP convention? These are just rhetorics of a giving a dog a bad name to kill it... even the SW was against the SW in that convention, but you conveniently just had to bring igbo in.
