Gay Practise: Morality Vs Liberalism..? by Marcelo290(m): 8:51am On Dec 15, 2017 |
I've been pondering on this topic for a while so I decided to bring it here on a public forum to get the views of most Nigerians. Nigerians by their nature are very hypocritical to say the least. Most times we shy away from talking about things that really matter because they are considered strange whilst people still engage in them, albeit, in secrecy. Some weeks ago, Nigeria and Kenya among other African countries toppled the chart of countries with the highest view of gay porn. Now the irony of the whole thing is that we live in a society which is filled with bunch of hypocrites. Who then watches these gay porn videos hence majority of Nigerians both online and offline criticize gay practice a lot? We Nigerians or say Africans claim to be morally upright, but the events of the dynamic world has brought up some questions which deserves quick answers, and to a large extent, question the degree of our morality. The western world on the other hand, is filled with Literalists, little wonder many of those countries have legalized gay marriages, everyone is free to practise whatever they want, so far you don't encroach into the rights of another. I'm writing this with all levels of conviction because I've had first hand experience both online and offline with gay people. I have had people visit me and vice versa, and at night, I notice them start behaving funny, in most cases, I leave the bed for them and sleep on the floor or retire to another room as the case may be. But who would ever suspect these people are gay? Because they seem to be morally upright, they are people I have trust and respect for, some are people in the high level strata of our society. Should I shock you guys? Many of our renowned pastors, priests, friends, teachers, Lecturers, course mates, politicians, celebrities, etc are gay! We may abuse and ridicule people like Bob risky who openly display their sexuality, he often gets bashed online, but the biggest question is who are those that patronize him? Alot of people in our society hide their sexuality because of the society stereotype and all that, don't be surprised to see the number of gay couples that would suffice if eventually gay marriage is legalized in Nigeria. That first guy who jumps to criticize gay people may be himself, gay! same goes for the ladies, that is the society we find ourselves in. Now haven juxtaposed the both words 'Morality' as its related to Africans, and 'Liberalism' as found in the Western world, which would you choose? Should we continue to claim morality with many others dying in silence and as well breeding a society filled with hypocrites, OR... should we accept Liberalism and a free society where everyone would be free to practise whatever they want so far as they don't step on anyone's toes without any law holding them in check? Should we say our morality is this case is more like a mirage as people still do what they want in secrecy and uphold Liberalism? I actually like to have the opinion of people, please be very sincere because many are dying in silence. MORALITY OR LIBERALISM?? Cc: Lalasticlala Myd44 Seun, let's get the opinion of people in this trivial issue. |

Liberalism and morality are not opposed to each other. We only think they are because religion has given us a very warped view of morality. Liberals fight for the rights of the oppressed, such as the poor, the enslaved, victims of racism/sexism, (and gays). This is a very moral cause. * * * In my view, the gay law is immoral and should be repealed. 7 Likes 2 Shares |

You're being too kind with these options: morality vs liberalism. If you're looking at the content of the thing which you've labeled 'morality', it's got nothing at all to do with morality. This is rather a choice between:hypocrisy and honesty of expression. Which of the two is the moral choice? A human being should be allowed to express himself as long as he does not infringe on the rights of another, in doing so. 1 Like |

Seun:I could liken the highlighted to "I don't support the emancipation of blacks at this time because it is against the law" or "I don't support the freedom of speech at this point because it is against the law" Sounds contradictory to your first statement, I'm reminded it's your opinion and you're entitled to it. |

Seun:First off, what makes you think your own judgement on the morality of the gay law is what should hold. in your opinion you're wiser than the vast majority of legislators who debated on it, or you assume they were blinded by religion whereas you're not. Now, what makes the law immoral? The fact that people are punished for satisfying their sexual whims, their "natural" sexual passions? So now, if we have people obsessed with assassination, it means we should repeal our law against murder, because in your opinion, that law prevents people from doing their job, or for those who do drugs, we should cancel all our laws regarding drug abuse, because after all, it's their own body. It is only wise to realize that the "freedom" to live your life as you want, which you think religion robs you of, is actually more limited by common sense than by Faith. |
