Beyond that, most of the famous and historical infrastructure projects were either built, conceived or completed during his tenure.

He completed the Kainji Dam, commissioned the Volkswagen factory (a joint venture between the Federal Government, Lagos State Government and Volkswagen of Germany), rebuilt Carter Bridge and built Eko Bridge and the National Stadium. His policies also led to the establishment of other car assembly plants like PAN in Kaduna and Anamco in Enugu (in 1969 the government developed plans to set up car plants across the country, in conjunction with foreign car makers, in order to fully manufacture cars in Nigeria. That's one of the reasons they conceived the Ajaokuta project).

His government concieved the Ajaokuta Steel Mill, the Third Mainland Bridge and the National Arts Theatre.

These are just a few examples of what he did.

Yes sir, very true.

Even some airports. Possibly Tin Can Island Port may have been his idea as well, cant say but seems plausible.

Impressive. He still remains a humble man.
Perceptions change.
Some of us were in primary / secondary school this period. Murtala Muhammad was in government so propaganda was negative against Gowon. Gowon was seem as a disgrace to have run a corrupt regime, refused handing over to democratically elected civillians as promised and to have become an ordinary student in England.

he achieved much but propaganda beclouded them all because he is not a Muslim

Gowon later had problems after the Dimka Coup. The Obasanjo government accused him of complicity in the coup, so they stripped him of his rank and stopped paying his pension. However Nigerians in the UK contributed money to take care of his upkeep.

Babangida restored his rank in 1987.

Yes. He and Major General Hassan Katsina were implicated by Dimka during his confession. Shehu Yar'adua protected Hassan Katsina from investigation and prosecution while Gowon simply refused to come back home to answer any question relating to the coup.

Third Mainland Bridge was conceived by Gowon. The first phase (Lagos Island to Ebute Metta) was commissioned by Shagari (I remember when it was commissioned). The second phase (Ebute Metta - Oworonshoki) was built by Babangida (I also remember when it was commissioned).

I have been looking for this picture since I read about it in Max Siollun's book, OIL POLITICS AND VIOLENCE. Murtala was so embarrassed that he immediately started paying Gowon's full pension and special stipend when he refused to end his program and return to Nigeria.
That book is very historical that will make an interesting read for the politically conscious mind.

This is a very unfair comment on this great leader of Nigeria and I guess like someone commented here, some of this misinformation is due to the scrapping of history from our school curriculum. To set the records straight, Gowon only ruled for five years (January 13 1970 to July 29 1975) having spent the first four years fighting the Biafran rebellion. Most of the road networks that criss cross the nation today were constructed under his régime. The fact that some of those roads are just being reconstructed is a testimony of the very good work that was done on them. In the educational sector, the Federal Unity Schools were introduced under his administration, several Federal universities were not only built but were well funded - Uniport, Unical, Unijos, Unilorin, Unimaid, BUK, Unisokoto etc. Under his administration unlike other military rulers after him, students were well cared for. The UPE - Universal Primary Education was the brain child of his administration. His administration established the students loans board where indigent students in higher institutions could take loans to complete their studies. Scholarships to study in foreign universities were granted in their hundreds. So good were our universities under Gowon that foreigners came to Nigeria to study, by foreigners, I do not mean just Africans but Europeans, Americans, Asia etc. Gowon, to ensure national unity after the civil war established the NYSC scheme. The scheme is still operational till today. Besides it is to his credit that that two years after the civil war, Nigeria hosted the 2nd All African Games where Nigeria topped the medals table. Besides, the now dilapidated National Stadium in Lagos was built under his administration. These are just a few of his accomplishments that I can remember. I sincerely believe that Gowon ( Go On With One Nigeria) was a great leader. Unfortunately, the love for the grandeur of office coupled with bad advice from those close to him did not allow him to know when to quit the stage. He was so popular and loved that for nine years, no attempt was made to topple him. No military ruler after him enjoyed such acceptability amongst the rank and file of the armed forces and the Nigerian populace.

That is Nigeria for you. Sometimes I wonder if being at the helms of affair make us evil. I have a conviction that every past leader want the best for Nigeria even though some of their policies has made us worse. It's as if there is a force up there that will just not make it work.

Yea, I'm in agreement with you here. Good people have ruled Nigeria. However, people underestimate what it takes to bring remarkable progress to a country like ours . . .

Yup and that was why he saw himself as superior in knowledge over Gen Gowon and one of the reasons he refused to accept him as head of state after the coup

He did and when the government stopped paying his pension (after the Dimka Coup), some Nigerians in the UK contributed money to assist him.
