if we don't win Argentina, FIFA will keep grouping us with them. We must defeat them to escape the Curse of the Argies grin

By the time they crash out in group stage, Messi will retire from international football for good because he's sensitive like that smiley

The chances of Messi winning the world cup with Argentina is less than Emmanuel Emenike making our WC team.

he's just like Drogba. Great player, but his international career will always bend his achievements. He should pray to even win a Cops America because the World Cup is out of it

I don't know where you're getting your data from but Cristiano (I don't call him Ronaldo b/c there's only ONE Ronaldo, the REAL One ... the Brazilian one, as the indefatigable Jose Mourinho would say) don't have more assists than Messi. And I don't believe that he has ever had more assists than Messi in any year.

With that said, what I was talking about isn't just your ordinary everyday assist. Anybody can give an assist but, in this case, Messi is one on one with the goalkeeper to tap in but he purposely tapped the ball to Suarez just to get him going. And watch what happened next: Suarez had a brace today, getting him ready for the El Classico on Saturday! That's what we call leadership ... that's what we call carrying your team(mate) on your back ... that's what we call not playing for the stats.

Another instance, in all my time of watching Cristiano Ronaldo, I have never seen him give up penalty to a team mate to take. But Messi does it all the time!

Ronaldo has more assists than Messi, stop pushing this false narrative. And, the world doesn't owe him jack.

Haha!! Naughty girl, you gonna get punished tongue

Mark my words, if the Argies doesn't win the World Cup next year then they are not going to win it again for the next 20 years. There's no Argentina without Messi. Do you know that in spite of all their firepower (Aguero, DiMaria, Higuin, Dybla etc), no other player besides Messi has scored a goal for Argentina in a competitive match in more then 1 year?

In 2010 nobody extended the voting period. But in 2013, FIFA was literally forced to extend the voting period after all the tantrums from Cristiano Ronaldo and the fierce blackmailing campaign by Real Madrid. \

Now, can you spot the difference?

O pari

safarigirl:
lol, because Messi no win am?

So, in 2010, when Messi got the award over Sneijder despite doing nothing to merit it, you did not question the award, then the year Messi did not win, you suddenly realised it's shady?

This Messi obsession is just making you look ridiculous undecided

no Argentina without Messi bawo? They were doing fine and winning international trophies till he carried his bad luck and spoil spoil everything...maybe when he leaves the god of soccer will once again look upon them with mercy grin

You don't need a spectacular team to win an international trophy, Messi would know this if he was humble enough to ask CR7 for tips grin

Maybe if he had gotten injured in that Copa final where he missed a penalty, Argentina would have won it

there is no difference. That 2010 Balloon D'Or was as suspect as any other.

Messi no reach finals for World Cup, but he won the title, how? Do not forget, it was Messi people used to tease that he is Blatter's son because Blatter favoured him more than any other player

There was nothing shady about the 2010 award. Yes, Snijder won the Champions league with Inter Milan and the world cup with Germany but he didn't really dominate any of those tournaments to challenge Messi. I would like you to put his 2010 stats side by side with Messi's.

And by the way, if we are going to complain about 2010, then tell me how Cristiano won it in 2014 over Manuel Neur? Point is, Real Madrid has destroyed what used to be a genuine award. Every year since 2003. Real Madrid pulls an out campaign to promote Cristiano Ronaldo for Ballon d'Or. I have never seen Barca do anything similar for Messi.

Nne, I think football owes Messi the big one. To the purists like us, Messi was the man who saved football after the retirement of Ronaldihno.

And btw, I rooted against Brazil in South Africa 2010 just because Dunga decided to leave Ronaldihno out of the squad.

Football does not owe any player. They have to show that they can do it.

Doing this is pointless sha, because you won't see what you don't want to. He has the highest number of UCL assists, but you will probably shift the goalpost again saying the assists were not fine enough or something. People like you are the ones that will say football is not about the goals.
And, you spoke about leadership, so you're comparing someone that broke down in tears to another one that got injured but still rallied his team. OK. All the best.

RELIVING THE AFTERMATH OF THE WORLD CUP DRAW FOR GROUP D

Rory Smith: Probably the most delicately balanced, most interesting, and most competitive of all the groups. Argentina only just qualified, Croatia has an abundance of individual talent, Iceland a tremendous collective strength and Nigeria was, possibly, the toughest fourth seed to draw. Argentina will not be happy at all.
-- NYtimes

Tom Adams | Kevin Coulson: If the cliche hunters must insist on finding a 'Group of Death', this would probably be it. However, unless Argentina fail miserably, there will be no powerhouse of world football missing out on the group stages. Croatia have a clutch of talented players, Iceland are an incredibly tough collective to face and Nigeria are growing in confidence under Gernot Rohr and have some Premier League talent at their disposal, with the likes of Alex Iwobi and Victor Moses.
-- EuroSport

Argentina will face familiar foes in the form of Nigeria. The Super Eagles will be taking on Argentina for the fifth time in six World Cup appearances and have lost all four of their previous matches against them. Argentina are two-time winners, but were beaten in the final by Germany four years ago. Jorge Sampaoli's men almost missed out on the tournament altogether before talismanic skipper Lionel Messi, scorer of seven goals in CONMEBOL qualifying, saved them with a hat-trick against Ecuador in a win-or-bust encounter. Expect to see Argentina in the knockout stages - they have gone past round one in 11 of their last 12 appearances. At the other end of the scale, Iceland are one of two tournament debutants. With just 334,000 inhabitants (at the time of qualifying) they are the smallest nation to reach a finals and will look for more memorable moments having knocked England out of Euro 2016. Croatia needed a play-off against Greece to reach a fifth World Cup and have lost their opening fixture at the past three editions of the competition. Croatia are aiming to channel the class of '98, when they finished third on their first appearance.
--FourFourTwo

Lee Wellings: As if the Iceland fairy tale hadn't brought enough joy, their first ever World Cup will be against Argentina in Moscow.
They will receive global support, but shouldn't be expected to succeed. The smallest ever nation to qualify has already performed miracles.
With resurgent Nigeria - who have had to face Argentina in FIVE World Cups - and gifted Croatia completing the quartet, this is undoubtedly a strong group.
--AlJazeera

Avi Creditor: There are no easy games in this group, but there's something awesome about Argentina and Messi opening up against the world's darling, Iceland. Remember, Iceland finished ahead of Croatia in its qualifying group, and Nigeria just beat a Messi-less Argentina in a recent friendly.
--SportsIllustrated

Steven Goff: This is a fun quartet, what with Lionel Messi and 2014 runner-up Argentina encountering the least populous country to ever qualify (Iceland), a traditionally capable European side (Croatia) and an unpredictable West African threat (Nigeria)...
--WashingtonPost

Anthony Lopopolo: If there is a Group of Death, it's this one. Argentina is the favourite based on name alone, but underwhelming results in the World Cup qualifying phase should encourage its opponents. Iceland cannot be underestimated anymore, Croatia has talent in midfield and attack, and Nigeria is one of the most promising teams in the tournament. Nigeria and Argentina are also set to renew their underrated World Cup rivalry. They've been drawn together in five of the past seven tournaments.

He played with the 2013 under 20 team in the run-up to the world cup, didn't make the final team.

At 23, he is still young for a keeper but he is still playing 3rd tier.

I hope the coach monitors him.
