Nigeria FF boss questions Caf's Awards criteria after Moses snub

Amaju Pinnick reckons the Super Eagles star performed very well in 2017 and should have made the final cut for the Player of the Year gong

Nigerian Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick believes Super Eagles attacker Victor Moses did just enough to deserve a spot on the final shortlist of nominees for the prestigious Caf African Player of the Year award.

The Chelsea winger was arguably the biggest of seven casualties as the continental football governing body announced its ultimate category nominees for the awards gala slated for January 4 in Accra on Monday.

The winger was seeking to become the first Nigerian to win the top honour since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999, after a largely successful 2017 campaign for club and country.

“I’m not happy because I feel that Moses should be part of the last three," Pinnick told Citi Sports.

"The only reason why [Riyad] Mahrez won the award last year was because of what he did with Leicester [City].

"And Moses helped Chelsea to win the league; played in the FA Cup final; and helped Nigeria qualify for the World Cup. So I wonder why."

Egypt international Mohamed Salah, 2015 winner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon and Senegal striker Sadio Mane made the final trio.

"I’m surprised. Maybe we should look at other criteria either than coaches who already have their mindset about who they want to vote for," Pinnick added.

"Tell me what Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did last year to deserve a place ahead of Moses. Aubameyang should not be on that list. He’s struggling with [Borussia] Dortmund

I quite agree with CAF on this selection. This is an individual award not a team award. Before Moses can claim the award for the best in Africa, is he even the best in Chelsea? Is he the best in the Nigerian team? For Nigerian players to get that recongnition, they need to raise their game...
Win the best player award in Chelsea first

Honestly the CAF selection was wrong, I think they should make it open, let the criteria made known to all. Moses deserves to be at the last 3.

When ronaldo won the euro 2016 was he better than Lionel Messi that season, ronaldo won the euros and the champions league, that was enough for him to win the ballon d or, ronaldo won the ballon d or again this season he won the champions league that's why and ronaldo deserve it,so if Moses can win the premier league tell me why didn't he deserve it? What did salah won?mane or aubameyang?they won nothing, salah is playing well this season but they are only looking at last season performance and he won nothing with Roma so think before you talk,

Caf award is not about team glory but personal achievement, is vote by coaches and captains of national teams that determine who wins it,

Yes moses tried with Chelsea but is he as exceptional as Salah. Mane or Aubamayeng ?

Personally my choice for the award 2017 is Mo Salah

Methinks Sadio Mane doesn't deserve to be on the list. Victor Moses should have been there instead.

At least no one will blame Isaa Hayatou. The first CAF award of this new dispensation and they got it wrong.
