Okay.. let me get this out of the way, i'm not arguing for Nigerian players as regards APOTY.. But I understand, if you got that impression.
What I'm simply saying is the same criteria don't always apply year after year, whether its FIFA or CAF awards. Why is that? It's commonsense, it's humans that vote.
And you cannot take away politics entirely in the voting system. So what we have is we tally up subjective opinions to make an objective opinion. Does that mean the system is flawed? Not necessarily. That's the rules. Can it be better? Definitely!

As regards your claim, if you can find me a witness or two who has been with you here as early as you have, and can tell us that all you have said is true, then fine.. merely stating it doesn't make it true.

Jarus:

Before some of you joined NL not to talk of starting this thread, some of us have been discussing this issue of APOTY every year.

I took part in every NL thread on APOTY in the last 10 years!

And before I discovered NL in 2007, I have been actively been discussing APOTY award since 1998, offline.

When it comes to Nigerian football, only very few folks here are as passionate as I am.

This is just being realistic, no Nigerian has deserved APOTY and not given.

The nearest was JJ vs Hadji in 1998 and JJ vs Eto'o in 2004, but still Hadji and Eto'o had a slight edge in the 2 years.

There is also a school of thought that believes Ghana's Kuffour deserved the 1999 award ahead of our own Kanu. I don't agree with that but it is worth mentioning that even in some of those controversial periods favoured Nigeria.

The earlier we realize that no one is sitting somewhere denying Nigerian players any award, the better.

If you do very well and shut down the world of football like Eto'o, Drogba, Yaya, Aubameyang etc, no one will deny you any award.

Let's face it, what we have been producing in the last 15 years are just average players. Produce world beaters like Yaya, Drogba, Eto'o, Aubameyang etc and see if you will no win it.

You have a point..

grin this is the mindset I was talking about. Having the view that FIFA or UEFA's opinions always have to reflect in CAF. grin

Jarus:

You are very funny.

Drogba that was the 10th best player in the world in 2005 was the player you want to compare with Martins?

Essien, the best player in French League and 22nd in the World for 2005?

You talked about FIFA stuff, but those 3 players got bigger recognition by FIFA, and you want the order to change in Africa?

Oh and I forgot to add because you mentioned Tammy. Tammy does not deserve another approach. he never deserved another approach. we have already set the ball rolling. what he needs to do is declare that he has a change of mind.. then it's up to us to accept him back or ignore completely.
AND. his current form is not good enough. let's keep watching him against Qatar 2022

forgiveness:

I think NFF should intensify moves to approach some of these players now.

Tosin Adarabioyo - Manchester City

Dominic Solanke - Liverpool

Lookman Ademola - Everton

Kehinde Tosin - Manchester United

I think we have to forget the past and still approach Tammy Abraham. After all, Zaha also shuned Ghana before he latter turned out for them.

The issue is what Tammy said. That's what will likely come back and bite him.
There is no such thing as leftover. The truth is we are almost always a second option. But some of these players make it very obvious. That's the problem

The pre-World Cup friendly match between Poland and Nigeria will be staged at the Municipal Stadium in Wrocław on March 23, 2018, the Polish Football Association (PZPN) officially confirmed on Thursday, December 21.

The World Cup bound Polish national team will face South Korea at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów, four days after their meeting with the Super Eagles for the first time in history.

The Municipal Stadium in Wrocław is the third largest stadium in Poland and has a capacity of approximately 42,000.

IF Ujah repeats what he did in the past -- scoring double digits -- then he is good enough if Rohr thinks he is good enough.
However, the player is average IMO. But maybe he could fit Rohr's plans and he could be utilized better than we ever have in the national team.

FIFA’S TIMELY WARNING TO SUPER EAGLES: FIVE REASONS ICELAND CAN SHOCK THE WORLD

www.nairaland.com/attachments/6445517_iceland_jpegde6cecc58beb8267ef44a3c911a26a8e
World football governing body and owners of the World Cup competition has warned the global audience to watch out for the mystery team called Iceland when the World Cup kicks off in June next year.

Iceland, one of the two debutants and the smallest county ever to qualify for the World Cup, will feature in Group D where the Super Eagles will be attempting to cross to the next round.

Iceland will be Nigeria’s second opponents after that of Croatia before facing Argentina.

FIFA in its website gave five reasons why Iceland can shock the world. It remarked that there is an undeniable novelty factor to the small country’s participation at Russia 2018.

“Even their manager, Heimir Hallgrimsson, acknowledged as much after their spot at the FIFA World Cup – and place in history as the smallest nation ever to qualify – was secured. “This is really odd,” he said. “I mean, Pele, Maradona… Aron Einar Gunnarsson.”

FIFA warned that no one should be fooled by this light-hearted suggestion that Iceland, and their bearded captain, might seem out of place among the game’s greats on the global stage.

“For all the focus on their record-breaking population, they were also the smallest country ever to qualify for the UEFA European Championship – and everyone knows how that tale unfolded.

‘Indeed, while Iceland’s World Cup hopes haven’t been aided by a tough draw that has pitted them against Argentina, Croatia and Nigeria, there is plenty of cause for optimism. And if Lionel Messi, Luka Modric and Co need any reminding, FIFA.com has five reasons why the Nordic newcomers are a team worth fearing”.

According to FIFA the Icelanders are serial giant-killers. “‘The bigger they are, the harder they fall’ seems to be the motto of a team that, over the past couple of years, has beaten the likes of Croatia, the Netherlands, Turkey, Ukraine, Greece and, most famously of all, England.

“As midfielder Olafur Skulason said: “I could see the newspapers in other countries talking about how unlucky we are to get that kind of group – but that is exactly what we want. We want those big games. We want to play against Argentina. What an amazing team to play against in the first game ever for Iceland in the World Cup!”

FIFA also remarked that Iceland can better their EURO heroics. It will be recalled that Iceland stunned the football world by qualifying from their group at UEFA EURO 2016, then knocking out England in the last 16.

But despite their outstanding results, which also included a win over Austria and a draw with eventual champions Portugal, the players insisted that performance levels were below par. “I strongly believe we’re better than we showed in most of those games,” veteran defender Kari Arnason told FIFA.com.

“There were nerves at the EURO but we’re normally better in keeping the ball, working openings.” This was borne out in qualifying, when Iceland impressed en route to topping a group featuring Croatia, Turkey and Ukraine.

It also bodes well for Russia 2018. As Arnason said: “It’s nice to say that we did so well [at the EURO] and still have a lot of room to improve.”

FIFA also points out that Iceland have a star No. 10 of their own. Lionel Messi might be Group D’s headline act, but Iceland also have an influential and highly effective No10 in the shape of Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The midfielder is undoubtedly the ace in the debutants’ pack, with vision, shooting ability and set-piece expertise among his most notable attributes. As Sigurdsson’s former manager, Lars Lagerback, pointed out, he also epitomises Iceland’s team-centred approach.

“Together with Henrik Larsson, I would say that Gylfi is the best team player I’ve worked with,” Lagerback said of the man Everton paid £45 million for. “He always plays for the team and must be one of the best two-way midfield players out there.”

FIFA also hailed the Icelandic team spirit which it described as second-to-none.

Though their midfield playmaker stands out, Iceland’s strength lies not in star players

SALISU YUSUF: NIGERIA’S 2018 CHAN PREPARATIONS ON TRACK

Rohr (middle) flankd by Eagles coach Salisu Yusuf and Victor Ikpeba (far right) at the Federation Cup final in Lagos last year

by Austin Ditlhobolo
Tuesday Dec 19, 2017. 15:00

Nigeria are busy preparing for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) which will take place in Morocco from 13th January 2018.

The first phase of preparations ended in Kano on Sunday with the team emerging victorious at the NPFL Invitational Super Six Tournament after outscoring CAF Champions League representatives MFM FC of Lagos 3-2 in the final. In earlier matches, they drew 0-0 with League champions Plateau United and pipped two –time African champions Enyimba FC 1-0.

Plateau United of Jos as well as other Nigerian flag-bearers n the continent, Enyimba of Aba and Akwa United of Uyo, alongside the host city’s beloved Kano Pillars took part in the tourney.

Immediately after Sunday’s win, Coach Salisu Yusuf told thenff.com that preparations would move into the second phase where some of the lapses seen in the team would be corrected and some fresh players called up.

“I am very impressed with the team. We did not have any elaborate preparation before the Super Six tournament and yet these boys raised their game, improved with every match and won the trophy. I congratulate them but this is the beginning of real hard work for us.

“We will begin the next phase of preparations immediately. We want to also see some new players in certain positions and correct some mistakes we made during some of our games in Kano while strengthening and consolidating on our strong areas.”

The Eagles will be camped at the Bolton White Hotels and Apartments for what promises a more intensive phase of training before they jet out to Morocco in the first week of January.

Argentina and Barcelona midfielder Lionel Messi says they must beat Nigeria, Croatia and Iceland if they want to do well in 2018 FIFA World in Russia.

The skipper says he wants to play in the World Cup final for the second tournament in a row.

However, he stressed that the two-time world champions have to overcome their opponents in Group D.

Messi spoke shortly after he was handed the Pichichi, the Top Goalscorer Award, and Di Stefano Award, a prize for the best player in the Spanish Spanish La Liga.

''It would be something incredible to be able to play in a World Cup final again,” he said.

"First we have to think about the group, which is difficult, and then we will see what happens.”

The Albiceleste reached the final in Brazil three years ago as they lost 1-0 to Germany and will now want to do better next year.

Nigeria will face Argentina in their final group match at Krestovsky Stadium, Saint Petersburg, on June 26, 2018

Fatau Dauda's Super Eagles romance....

FATAU DAUDA HAILS THE SUPER EAGLES' UNDYING PASSION

Fatau Dauda

by Phumzile Ngcatshe

Tuesday Dec 19, 2017. 18:30

Ghanaian international goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has revealed that he envies the Nigerian national side for their undying passion.

Despite playing for the Black Stars at the CAF African Nations Cup and at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Dauda cannot hide his admiration for their rivals.

The Enyimba FC shot stopper will swiftly grasp any opportunity to play for the Super Eagles in the event that FIFA rules will allow him.

Dauda has been in top form for The Peoples Elephants, guiding them to qualify for the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup, but has been ignored by new coach Kwesi Appiah since assuming post in May this year.

“Nigerians are passionate about football. They love football like we Ghanaians and you know that rivalry will be there forever,” said the keeper.

“If FIFA changes their law today and I have the chance to play for Nigeria I will gladly do that. I won’t think twice before accepting the offer. There are a lot of talented players in the Super Eagles and it will be great to be part of a great team.”

Meanwhile, he added that he is not worried by the continuous snub by Appiah, saying he will respond anytime Ghana needs him.

“For me, the most important thing now is to continue to do well for my club. It is when you do well for your club that you will possibly be recognised by your country,” he adds.

“The media and the federation in Ghana are monitoring my performance here and if the coaches deem it fit they will invite me.”

FIFA also hailed the Icelandic team spirit which it described as second-to-none.

Though their midfield playmaker stands out, Iceland’s strength lies not in star players

I see our first match has the crucial game and a determinant of how far we will go at the World Cup. Anything short of a win against the Croats maybe catastrophic.

Having 3points going into our second game against the Vikings will go a long way cos I see them drawing their first match against the Argentines and coming for a kill against us with the hope of sealing qualification in their last group match against croatia a familiar side.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: VICTOR MOSES - NIGERIAN TO BOUNCE BACK FOLLOWING CAF SNUB

Chelsea's Victor Moses

Wednesday Dec 20, 2017. 09:59

Victor Moses will be eager to prove a point when Chelsea take on Bournemouth in a Carabao Cup clash this evening.

The 27-year-old, who played an integral part in helping the Blues to English Premier League glory earlier this year, was left out of the three-man shortlist for the 2017 CAF African Footballer of the Year accolade.

Moses racked up 34 appearances - most notable starring in a wingback role - as Antonio Conte inspired the club to league triumph.

Injury hampered his start to the current campaign, but Moses proved on his return why he is currently considered as one of the best players in world football from the African continent.

The attacking trio of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were included in the final three, with Moses the only league champion among the lot last season.

Having played a key part in Chelsea's revival, Moses will be felt hard done as he now sets his sights on downing the Cherries at Stamford Bridge. Victory for the Blues on Wednesday night will book their place in the semifinals of the cup competition.

SLAVEN BILIC: CROATIA V NIGERIA WILL BE TOUGHEST GAME

Former Croatia manager Slaven Bilic has admitted that the European nation faces a tough group at the 2018 World Cup, especially in their opener against Nigeria.

The Croatians have been pooled in Group D alongside the Super Eagles, Argentina and Iceland.

“It seems to me that it is not sufficiently recognised the weight of our group and especially the negativity of the schedule. We have a difficult group and the worst possible match schedule,” Bilić told Sportske Novosti.

“Nigeria at the start when it is, by tradition, the strongest and most difficult. Argentina have a decisive squad, and it would be better if it was in the third when we might have already settled the placement.

“The Icelanders are the third rival, but they have a mentality that even if they have already crashed out, and perhaps just because of that, playing as if their life depends on that encounter.”

Nigeria and Croatia will meet in their Group D opener at Kaliningrad Stadium on June 16.

Ebuehi and Ehizibue named among top 5 right backs in the Dutch eredivise...

Kudos to the boys.
Goodnews! Let them keep playing and continue their development.

I was really impressed with Ebuehi's performance against the Argentina. That guy grabbed the opportunity presented to him with both hands and legs. I saw the hunger in him. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw di Maria in his pocket. In short Dude didn't put any foot wrong in that game and has penned his name down for the next friendly match in March.

MIKEL RULES OUT EVERTON SWITCH

John Obi Mikel

by Bertin Basson

Wednesday Dec 20, 2017. 16:30

John Obi Mikel has dismissed any rumours suggesting that he will be making a return to the English Premier League.

The Super Eagles midfielder is currently plying his trade in the Chinese Super League for Tianjin Teda, having donned the colours of current champions Chelsea for over a decade.

Mikel, 30, has been linked with a move to Everton in the upcoming January transfer window but the Nigeria international was quick to dismiss these reports as 'false rumours'.

"I don't know from where such a rumour could come, but this story is untrue," Mikel told Tianjin TV:

"I want to stay in the CSL and play for [Tianjin] Teda. I'm sure there will be lots of speculation about me as the transfer window nears but it is a false rumour."
