The "when necessary" needs to be defined, probably cite an example if there cant be a clear definition, you cant just throw a vague clause and you expect us to jump at it.

The operatives of SARS are one of the worst things to happen to Nigeria in modern times. They have maimed and harassed innocent civilians. Having said that, i don't think calling for the end of SARS will change anything because the police or any other agency will take over from where they stopped. I think reforming the agency is the best call of action.

Lol. How do you define "absolutely necessary"? It is completely subjective. What i think is "absolutely necessary" might be different from what you think is "absolutely necessary" unless there are guidelines which ensures everyone is on the same page on what is "absolutely necessary" cool.

The sole mandate to prevent, confront and solve cases related to armed robbery and other violent crimes.

Prohibition of SARS Operatives to act as body-body-guards, delving into land matters, personal disputes, debt collection & civil matters.

Very much on point. I can't understand the concept of SARS going to filling stations to arrest people carrying jerrycans, or to carry out debt collection.

The Inspector General of Police met with commanders of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) today and this was the result of the meeting.

Nigeria Police Force‏ @PoliceNG

https://twitter.com/PoliceNG

Why is it not CLEARLY STATED THAT THEIR MANDATE DOES NOT INCLUDE ISSUES RELATED TO SUSPECTED INTERNET FRAUD (YAHOO YAHOO, 419, ETC)? ? ? After all, that is the biggest complaint against them. How they go about harrasing young men who they illegally accuse of 'yahoo yahoo', as if that is their mandate?

Nigerian police force is so corrupt it needs a full overhaul or be scrapped.

If it is scrapped, then we should hire British Police (the world's #1 Police Force) to help establish a real brand new Police Force that is competent!

What we have today are bunch of incompetent and murderous criminals in uniform!!

They seem to be silent on the SARS' brutality of youths in the name of "yahoo-yahoo". The reforms should have made that explicit.

I was expecting more. We need to see a public well crafted rules of engagement so all citizens can know what to expect form the police and help monitor compliance.
If followed, these 'little' steps will enhance accountability in the police force because the reason why the FSARS officers go and act rogue is because there is no accountability as there isn't even any means of identifying them when they misbehave.
With the identification uniform and all their operations sanctioned by their superior commanders, these should instil sanity to their damaged policing procedures.

These reforms (though not enough) if effectively implemented is a step in the right direction to reform SARS.
