Russian and United States combat aircraft were involved in a potentially serious engagement in the skies over Syria on 13 December, the defence ministries of both countries confirmed. While the US Department of Defence (DoD) and the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation differ on the details of the incident, both have said a US Air Force (USAF) Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor stealth fighter fired off flares to warn off a pair of Russian Sukhoi Su-25 ‘Frogfoot’ ground attack aircraft that were flying in the vicinity of the city of Al Mayadin in eastern Syria. The nearby Euphrates River is the deconfliction boundary between the United States and Russia in Syria, and is officially acknowledged by both countries as such (the United States must stay to the east of the river, and the Russians to the west). At this point the narrative diverges, with the US stating that the two Russian jets were engaged in this manner as they had crossed over to the eastern side of the river, and were interfering with USAF aircraft conducting strikes against the Islamic State to the extent that there was nearly a mid-air collision. The DoD told US media that the Su-25s did not respond to repeated calls to leave the area, and thus were ‘warned off’ using the flares. The Russians however said the Su-25s were escorting a humanitarian convoy that was travelling along the western bank of the Euphrates, and that it was the USAF F-22 that crossed the deconfliction boundary to harass its aircraft. The F-22 was then chased away by a Su-35 ‘Flanker-E’ fighter that was providing top-cover for the Su-25s, the Russian defence ministry said. While this particular incident did not end badly for either side, the potential for a more serious outcome appears to be rising as such encounters increase. |

Uncle Sam aircrafts always scaring off 2-3rd generation Aircrafts. And yes the SU-35 was there to cover the younger ones. Frumentum is anti Russian do he will surely defend the F-22 now. Lol |

Frumentum: 2 wks back a buddy was in Mandera on an IT job. After his contract he walked across the unmarked border to the Somali side and was seen by some mysterious individuals. At night (in his words) a Russian MRAP showed up at his hotel and 3 guys with SCAR Hs politely invited him to accompany them to answer a ' few questions.' The interestingly customized MRAP had empty dog kennels, at least 6 prisoner cells in the rear,a mid mounted rooftop grenade launcher,a forward 14.7 mm along with at least 2 sat dishes. He was questioned at the base at army base at which these guys have their own compound and right of way everywhere even in the op areas. They showed him film of his cross border walk and the angle seemed to be a ground based camera. Anyway his tale of his excursion tallied with both the army intel and specops guys. As he was returned to his hotel the local Somalis almost fell over with amazement and panic-let me leave it at that. There was a series of massacres in 2014 of non Somali quarrymen and teachers and with intensified COIN ops the AS are targeting even their own Somalis in landmine ambushes as they are blind to all normal human norms.

It seems KDF is incorporating lessons learned in somalia into mainstream SOP. Was recently in Kagawa on the outskirts of Nairobi, my estimate of the expansive barracks is about 400 hectares in size. They have built a new brick fence and wire mesh on the inside and in between the ly have dug a trench, they now have watch towers at strategic locations with a gunner placed 24/7, the entrance they got metal detectors, they were still installing x-ray scanner and for cars they got multiple automated barriers for redundancy that can stop a truck at full speed-like the ones you see on third pic... Pic 1,2 you can see part of the wall and the trench, wire fence not visible 1 Like |
