Why Nigerians Hate Igbos, By Chinua Achebe. IBS ALART. by deomelo: 6:54pm On Dec 25, 2017
1. Nigeria’s foremost novelist Chinua Achebe has claimed that Nigerians, especially of the Hausa/Fulani and the Yoruba stocks, do not like his Igbo ethnic group because of the southeast’s cultural advantage.

2. He traced the origin of “the national resentment of the Igbo” to its culture that “gave the Igbo man an unquestioned advantage over his compatriots in securing credentials for advancement in Nigerian colonial society.

3. He therefore described the Igbo, who are predominantly Catholic, as “fearing no god or man, was “custom-made to grasp the opportunities, such as they were, of the white man’s dispensations. And the Igbo did so with both hands.

4. He delved into history with his claim, asserting that the Igbo overcame the earlier Yoruba advantage within two decades earlier in the twentieth century.

5. Although the Yoruba had a huge historical and geographical head start, the Igbo wiped out their handicap in one fantastic burst of energy in the twenty years between 1930 and 1950.”

6. He narrated the earlier advantage of Yoruba as contingent on their location on the coastline, but once the missionaries crossed the Niger, the Igbo took advantage of the opportunity and overtook the Yoruba.

7. The increase was so exponential in such a short time that within three short decades the Igbos had closed the gap and quickly moved ahead as the group with the highest literacy rate, the highest standard of living, and the greatest of citizens with postsecondary education in Nigeria,” he contended.

NOTE::

Achebe, however, saved some criticisms for his kinsmen. He criticised them for what he described as “hubris, overweening pride and thoughtlessness, which invite envy and hatred or even worse that can obsess the mind with material success and dispose it to all kinds of crude showiness.”

He added that “contemporary Igbo behavior(that) cab offend by its noisy exhibitionism and disregard for humility and quietness.
= Achebe himself.

What is wrong with this chinua achebe sef?

So you mean igbo love others and they are hated in return?

Love is the only currency for love.

Even nairaland alone is a clear example. Check every ethnic related thread and see the "love" igbos are dishing out.

Obviosly, needless chest beating and putting other people down is not limited to just the ones on NL, this is a collective and cultural defect across the board.

...but I do understand, he was Ojukwu's propaganda and information minister during the civil war.

@ bolded........................Abi o jare!!!

Nigerians "hate" Ibos who in turn just can't help moving their whole families to the regions where they allege the indigenes loathe them and

then shamelessly claim they develop their enemies' region. what is "smart" in developing your neighbours' region whilst yours is fallow?

All around the world, each culture maintains that "charity begins at home" but in ibos case, it begins in their enemies backyard.

You would think from Achebe's whining that the Igbo of Aguleri love the Igbo of Abriba or that the Igbo of Ngwa love the Igbo of Isuoma.

The Archdiocese of Mbaise has refused to be led by an Archbishop whose origin is Awka and said they will decamp from Catholicism into other denomination of Christianity if their wish for an Mbaise son is not met.

So much for Achebe's Catholic Igbos and love of kin!

Crap!

Igbos are their own worst enemies. Forget the crap the bitter old toad is saying.

Igbos that hire Hausa and Yoruba mopol to guard them when they're going to visit their fathers compounds in the East. You'll hear stuff like "I don't want an Mbaise man holding a gun near me."

If he is lucky to be kidnapped at gun point by an Mbaise man or Abakliki man they will sell him for profit.

If he is unfortunate and was kidnapped by Abriba or Ngwa, ok, he will become ngwa ngwa soup that day.

We don't give a fck how you feel about Chinua Achebe, the father of modern African literature. The man was an icon, who is looked up to by hundreds of million across the globe and brought great pride to Africa and his people. What he said is no different from what former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger said about Igbos and Nigeria.
“the wandering Jews of West Africa-gifted, aggressive, westernized, at best envied and resented, but mostly despised by their neighbors in the federation”
I guess Henry Kissinger is chest-beating on our behalf. cool

I know a lot of Nigerians will try to lie that they have no resentment against the Igbo just as part of the self denial problem of Nigeria.

Achebe was a great man of words and i thank God men like him put in writing the problems with Nigeria.

It is left for us to solve them or allow Nigeria to continue drifting while we play ostrich that the problem does not exist.

From the time Achebe wrote those words to today, thousands of Nigerians have perished in Libya and inside Nigeria simply because we chose to deny than tackle the problems. Thousands more will still die as Nigeria continues to be an uninhabitable space for its people.

They'll lie because it's convenient to do so. Nigerian's don't want to live together, they only live together, because they feel it's in their own best interest to do so. If the North and the West felt they were better off on their own, they would be.

Dr. Thomas Sowell of Hoover Institution (Stanford Uni), made the same conclusion about the educational achievement of Igbos in his great books: “Intellectuals and Race” and “Wealth, Poverty and Politics” and how that achievement brought resentment and envy to them from other Tribes in Nigeria, leading to the killing of over 30 thousand Igbos across Nigeria in the 60s, especially in the Northern region. I love my Igbo people. God bless Igbos and God bless Republic of Biafra. Igbo kwenu!!

Great words from a great man.

Achebe was fearless and truthful no matter whose ox is gored .

Go and read his timeless book,The trouble with Nigeria, it is a prophetic book.

Igbos are industrious and enterprising, they do these at a frenetic pace that other ethnic nationalities find difficult to keep up with.

Because, they can not compete, he is then hated for being 'arrogant','mundane','noisy and proud.

ENVY IS THE PRICE EXCELLENCE HAS TO PAY.

Do Yorubas understand the magnitude of their hateful incline toward the Igbos, and what that hate can do to them as well?. This century is a century of Igbo awakening. The current generation is finally seeing Nigeria and Nigerians for what it really is. This new consciousness is what is needed to get us to the next level. In the past igbo businesses were terrorized by the Nigerian government, but most igbos saw it then as isolated incidents and didn't do anything. Now this current generation refuse to play that game. Touch one business and everyone joins together in protest.
