What Are The Pros And Cons Of Flat Roof Design In Nigeria by bugativeron: 5:48am On Dec 26, 2017
I am in the bid to roof my house and I am constrained to weigh different options due to cost implication. the cost I got for my roof design including facial wall for the roof is about 2m. However, I started thinking about flat roof designs may be it will be cheaper and beautiful.

My questions,
1. What are the pros and cons of it in Nigeria?
2. Is it cheaper to do and what volume of savings?
3. Is it affected by rain or sun reflection on the building?
4. Do Nigerians use or not?
5. If they don't why?

cheers

Feasible in the far north with low rainfall, but a disaster in the southern and central parts of Nigeria that get Heavy rainfall and must use some type of Gable roofing.

Besides why would anyone want to roof a proper house with Flat roofing?
Na warehouse you dey build abi residential building?
If you want to build , make sure you invest your best into your personal space and build properly, pricing not withstanding.

By flat roof do you mean roof top? I've always preferred rooftop cuz of the large space for lounging and laundry line. I like Cotonou architectural designs. Each house stands out unique from another. I don't know why we don't really see that in Nigeria.

If you re building in the southern part of Nigeria and u want to use a flat roof design, then ensure you use a very durable roofing sheet. Otherwise you'd suffer leaks cos of the intensity of rain in thiese parts. Also ensure that angle of tilt is not less than 5 degrees

It can and has been done. But a hip or gable roof is preferable.

Flat Roofs are expensive to build, and comparatively, its cost of maintainance should also be taken into account.

It has its pros, but when it has to be adopted, it should be for functional reasons.

If your Architectural Drawings get to any District Office, or town planning Auth., then you will be properly guided/advised.

Not all DO's would approve its construction.

NB:- Be guided by professional advice.

Perhaps he means single-sloped roofs.

Flat (horizontal) roofs will only work in the driest deserts. Not even in northern Nigeria.

The trusses in a single-sloped roof are simple triangles and the king post (upright part of the triangle) can be as low as 1m to1.5m. Very economical on wood.

The roofing sheets will not be cut since the roof plan is just a rectangle, so no waste of roofing materials.

You will need to shade windows from sunlight though.

Placing hoods above windows or having trees (eg those tall slim trees) in the compound can provide shade.

Did i hear you say "why would anyone want to use flat roof"?
Am an architect, Flat roof is unique for me.

1. Is cheaper
2. It gives building a unique look
3. It controls the flow of zinc rain to one side, meaning u don't need to spend much on Water collectors.
4. It has low possibility of leakages because it has no complications.

For the leakage u pointed out, just use long span and avoid much space between the poleins so that the roof won't cave-in overtime.

Thanks
