Yeah I recall Rufai was in goal but the whole team was poor that day. And I think he made a couple of saves that people were welcoming him back.

As for Willy, he was far down in the pecking order. Even a goalie like Emmanuel Babayaro was ahead of him. Willy Opara, Willy Agbonivbare and David Ngodigha were in the bad books of Nigerians due to their poor outings at the under aged competitions. They were not trusted. We took underaged competitions then very seriously cos those were the only means to participate in the WC. Angus Ikechi, Emeka Amadi and Lemmy Isa that did well at their respective age grade competitions just fizzled out.

The whole problem started when Ike was ruled out due to injury.
yes shorunmu's injury came at the worst possible time but going back to Rufai was the easiest and laziest option. Rufai had been out of the team for about 3 years plus and his career was winding down.

Rufai was out of the team but was still active with Depotivo La Coruna.

Ike Shorunmu was at his prime and so automatically became first choice while Abiodun Baruwa of 3SC was second choice.

Ike maned goal for most of the qualifiers but sustained injury weeks leading to the mundial.

Abiodun Baruwa was stepped up but the Yugoslav game exposed him. As I earlier highlighted, all the other available goalies were not up to the mark and we have a legend of the game that was still active at Deportivo. This was just about 2weeks to deadline of submission of final list. No time to start scouting or experimenting another goalie and Rufai was called back.

Mehn, Dosu was poor, really poor during the Olympics o. People need to watch the whole match and not highlights. Very poor positioning and ball handling. Lucky we had a good attack and luck was on our side

That Brazil game was Dosu's worst outing in that tournament.

What will you then say of Dida of Brazil

Contrary to the negative feedback, after Agu's poor performance in the first half when he replaced Onazi in the game against Zambia, he put up a tidy display in the second half. Something only Ogu and Hope Akpan has brought to the Super Eagles in recent years. I am not quick to write Agu off.

People try to hang onto a poor few minutes and deliberately decided to neglect Agu's good second half display.

That is like saying Nigeria was poor against Argentina in the friendly because of our display in the first half.

Agu had a poor fifteen minutes in the first half. The second half was refreshing.

Thank you Bros.

Don't know why people are bent on giving agu a tag for a few minutes error neglecting he settled in later.
We should not look at Agu through the Mikel obi prism, they are simply not the same, Mikel agu is a defensive midfielder, he and troost ekong are regulars for bursaspor and he's got a few goals this season.

I think we are loaded in the DM, we need a above average CM hence the sokari brouhaha .

June is a long time away in football, so many things can happen b4 then.

My people THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR MIKEL OBI!!! we just have to learn to play well without him.

Nigerians are too quick to forget. The Flashes of Ogbeche in friendly Matches earned a Spot in the Final List for the 2002 World Cup.

The Flashes of Lukman Haruna during the WC Year also earned him a Call up for the 2010 World Cup.

The same Mistake was repeated in 2014 World Cup, hence when are we gonna Learn?!

Uzoho can't be trusted to man the Post for the Eagles in Russia, same as Maduka and Co. They ain't tested regularly in an elite Competition(s) yet.

Seem we are taking the Department for granted..... it's better we recall Enyeama than going to the Mundial with the Rookies.

If Ejide is invited, I believe he merits it coz Rohr has Scouts who are monitoring these Players.

Whoever is invited for the March Friendly Match is watched and proven his readiness to represent the GWG in my Opinion.

it is the same thing many have said, we are waiting till March. Even me, I keep saying le us try Uzoho in March to conclude because so far, so good.

Enyeama, I refuse to talk about till January, if he makes the progress Rohr expects, and even then, I will need to hear from his own lips that he is returning to the team, until then, he no even dey my mind.

For now, Uzoho is the most promising goalie on Rohr's roster, so, give him his time against Poland. Goal keeping is not like Striking, you cannot flatter to deceive. Ezenwa was found out in his second game. We don't need five games to find a goalie's weakness

People are always quick to pick on the youngster because of lack of popularity.

Experience earned Pater Rufai the spot and the flogging was history.

Experience gave Ike Shorunmu later the spot and the fumbling was history.

Select the best. Not Rookie or Experience.

That's it! Club football and National team Football are DIFFERENT.
This is what majority of folks here are finding hard to come to terms with.

They don't need to be told before they know that they are currently not wanted at Leicester.. Musa should go back to Russia or move to Turkey.. I don't think the EPL suits him..

As for Nacho,I don't think Leicester will sell him just yet. probably loan him in January.

Your first paragraph highlights why I said goalkeeper selection is not as straight as outfield players selection. You may bring that 1st choice Ifeanyi Uba keeper to the Super Eagles and he flops big time.

Dosu Joseph was a third choice keeper for Plateau United when he represented Nigeria at the 1996 Olympics.

BTW Rohr has not ruled out Enyeama's return.

Granted! it's a possibility that he flops and also another possibility he shines.

Dosu made the Olympic squad but not the senior team. I can't remember if he made it as an overaged player or as a bona fide U23.

You were all for Akpeyi before the emergence of Ezenwa.

I would like to know why the GK selection shouldn't be modelled in same way other positions are? Shouldn't the best be always selected.

Ezenwa never deserved to be in the team in the first place, he never deserved it, any other goalkeeper could have done exactly what he has done or even done better, the only difference is that opportunity wasn't given to them.

Until Enyeama rescinds his retirement, he's not in the reckon as far as I'm concern.

The second error was after Mubi Oparaku did one useless bicycle kick at the edge of the 18yards box and some how the ball got to Baruwa who now passed the ball to an on Rushing Yugoslav player and that resulted in the 3rd goal. Mubi also lost his place to Eguavoen due to that school boy bicycle kick.
Bora said the World Cup is not for boys but for men after dropping Mubi for Eguavoen.

mobi oparaku eventually made it to france 98 and started the first game against spain

This Croatian coach doesn't know no African team plays same style as Nigeria. The only African team grin that plays like the SE is the French NT.
This guy (Dalîc) is beginning to sound like Wedson Nyirenda somehow maybe he's still enthused about the job cheesy.
My own is let the NFF organise a second friendly for the eagles in March (nothing more).

Croatia Coach : I Know My Starting XI For World Cup Opener Vs Nigeria

Published: December 26, 2017

Croatia National Team manager Zlatko Dalić has clarified his comments about knowing the starting line-up that will take to the Kaliningrad Stadium, Kaliningrad pitch against Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup on June 16.

The Croatians are aware that Argentina are nailed-on favourites to top Group D of the World Cup, so they are focusing their attention on the next strongest rival on paper, Nigeria, in the buildup to the mundial.

''I got a clue in my head. I think every coach knows the first 11 for the World Cup. But certainly there is space for one or two changes. You have to have a vision, so you can do it,'' said Dalic to Sportske Novosti.

Croatia have lined up friendlies against Peru and Mexico during the next Fifa window, and are wrapping up talks to face an African team with the same playing style as Nigeria in June.

''That's my plan to check in early June, and then on June 8 or 9 before leaving Russia. The other should be an African national team with a similar style to Nigeria,'' added Dalic.

The Super Eagles are due to take on Poland in a friendly on March 23, and proposed warm-up matches with England and Egypt are still in the works.

William Okpara you mean.

William never impressed in the national colours.
He was not even in the national team radar at that time. You remember his outing at the 1987 WYC?

The other keeper was Wilfred Agbonivbare. This one too, we know his nick name to be Agbonibasket those days. That guy na basket. May his soul RIP

Ike Shoromu was out injured and it was time for Abiodun Baruwa to show the stuff he was made of after missing out on the 1996 Olympics party due to age discrepancy. But he made some calamitous errors especially against Yugoslavia. And we got whipped 3-0 in Zagreb, Yugoslavia. We followed that game with a 5-1 thumping by the Netherlands.

The coaching crew led by Bora Milutinovic found no local league keeper capable for stepping into those gloves and rather preferred to recall Rufai.

Apart from Chile 87 which was U20 tourney,Willy Opara wasn't given chance in eagles even when he was at top form in South Africa league with Orlando Pirates.Prior to France 98 he deserved the spot ahead of Rufai after Ike injury.

Wilfred Agbonavbare was a solid keeper with Rayo Vallecano in Spanish LA liga, pls forget the Agbonibasket stuff. He deserved the number one spot than Rufai prior to Afcon and US 94.

Pls i thought Baruwa was the third keeper to Atlanta 96,i can't recall vivdly but I know Dosu was the first choice and Emma second choice.

As at 2002 most fans want Ogbeche at WC so dropping Aiyegbeni was not an issue, remember Agali was the main man but refused Onigbinde invitation due to his solidarity with Sunday Olishe & co that were banished from the team. The same Yakubu Aiyegbeni had the worst outing for Nigeria ever in the WC at 2010.

I will not lie. I was happy the eam was disbanded and banished at that time because mafians ran things in the team with maximum impunity.

However, since the the team was banished and the task was to raise and nurture a team with that will stand the test of time, it was expedient that the trouble shooters and useless mafias destructing the team and holding the NFF ransom(including Minister of Sport) be discarded and promising talents brought in.

Hence, the 2002 wc team was filled with new potential players which majority of Nigerians never raised an eyebrow against because the situation warranted at that point in time for CHANGE.

Did the move backfired? I don't think so because majority of those players that went to that wc later formed the backbone of the team.

Onigbide did not throway all the players. He only left out those that caused problems and banned by the Minister, if not what or why were Garba Lawal, Okocha, Julius Aghahowa, Taribo, Mutiu, Babayaro, Sodje, Akwuegbu, Okoronkwo, Udeze, Shorunmu, Kanu still in the team, if truly the whole team were banished?

Most of these players were already in team as far back as year 2000. They were never Onigbide boys. Facts

They were the ones that executed the first two matches in that WC but fumbled big time.

so, Onigbide acted on order from above. Abi, make em disobey him employee or throway the purpose on which basis he was employed?

Now, let us analyse the 3 matches we played. Which was our best match out of the 3? and who were the players that excecuted the match? Oya, make dem answer.

The match against Argentina was so bad because one player flopped big time. Who was the player? Oya, make dem talk.

Kanu was a flop against Argentina,Shorunmu a flop against Sweden, gave them the second goal on a platter of gold and England match was the best with introduction of Enyeama, Akwuegbu,Opabunmi and James Obiorah who controlled the midfield perfectly with Okocha.

In addition to the one of the flop against Argentina was Okocha because he never had hold of th ball hence we were overran in th midfield by them.

I posted this elsewhere. But since I am looking for a response, I copied and pasted it here....

I may sound a little biased. However, I am an avid supporter of Imoh Ezekiel. In my earlier post, I voiced my concern when I taught he was going to be excluded from the Olympic team by Siasia, after a convincing display during a friendly with Brazil. Ofcourse, he undoubtedly became our most creative playmaker at the Olympics. I watched with dismay as he was overlooked during the world cup qualifiers. Hence, this promoted the creation of this topic.

Guys, I would love your honest opinion on this. What do you think of Victor Moses and Imoh Ezekiel combination on the wings during the world cup. You may rewatch his highlight during the Olympics on YouTube to refresh your memory. I know our attack is one of the best parts of our national team, but my plan is to make it more potent (as to be honest, our defence is very worrisome currently). I sincerely believe that if enough interest is voiced, it may draw the NFF to look more closely at that option. We may start out by trying him out in a friendly match (ideally paired with Moses).

Ezenwa has been in the national team for a while. He was worked with a good number of coaches and was first choice at Ifeanyi Uba until of late.
He was the first choice goalie for the NPFL All stars that played in Spain not too long ago. Last season.

Should you question why Ezenwa, a second choice at Ifeanyi Ubah, is in the SE? Why not question why he is second choice to Uche Okafor at Ifeanyi Uba. Or who is current first choice?

As for Dosu he was a third choice goalie at Julius Berger (not even plateau united) prior to Atlanta.
