The Byzantine 8th Century Emperor Pope Leo (I think) then banned ALL imagery of the Christ. Sometime much later a much more dignified picture of a Christ began to emerge and has developed into what it is today.

The icon and description that was distributed along with the arrest warrant for Jesus by the Roman authorities, gives a description strikingly different, it is much closer to the description of Paul.

Gathering his Elect by his angels, is the rays of sunlight enlivening the dead, waking up the spiritually dead
