Haircut might be mundane to you but might not be to someone else. The amount her family spends on hair is more than what some people take home monthly in naija. Why don't you view it that way as well.

As others have said, it is good to plan and budget even in Naija, if not you will use all your money to buy kfc.

thats like 6 KFC meals, but i guess they don't eat in KFC or its under the 100 pounds eating out.
I guess, there's some element, that the expenditure is not 100% accounted for and there's a chronic Nigerianization of having to cough out 30pounds for a haircut for 3 males right? Ist that every week, fortnight, monthly?? it should probably be knocked off to miscellaneous

That's actually the average salary of guys in my office here in Abuja per month.

Sorry to bother you guys about my "undue comparison"
but I'm currently considering relocating to Canada so I need informed opinions of guys abroad.

Thanks

There is no basis for comparism. Canada and UK are two different countries.

I know two friends from Nigeria who joined the bandwagon and moved to Canada.

One is currently unemployed while the other is currently a seller on amazon (he couldn’t find a job).

Another friend moved from the UK and returned back after 3 months. Lol. She said moving to Canada was a mistake.

I do have one friend that’s doing well though. He moved to Canada in 2009 before the current influx of Nigerians to the country.

In conclusion, weigh your options well before relocating.

Haircut is 2 males..they go twice a month..if it costs more we shave it from my hair allocation then allocate more money to it in the next budget.
I don't really trust the husband with a clipper unless he perfects with himself first.I do my daughter's hair myself for now.
I don't like to stick known expenditures under miscellaneous..I know what it is so why not put a name to it..I like to see things in black and white.
Do not like KFC as a whole but the chicken is great.it goes under eating out money.

P60/ P450.

i got a self assessment letter from HMRC and when i told a friend he almost had a stroke telling me to take it seriously and that i was in trouble, i shud get an accountant.

And i was like, Oga take a chill pill

I initially started a company because of extra work, but distcontinues and opted for PAYE. However, i never received work with the company and earned zero. Unfortunately, i was unable to get a hold of an accountant for advice. I eventually resorted to youtube and the hmrc self-guide tutorial. Anyway, i got a mail today that i didnt need to fill another form for the self-assessment the following year except if i was asked to or if my financial circumstances change and i also noted somewhere to keep my payslips and p450s for 5years. So, we'll see how that plays

For doctors it means you can no longer locum under your limited liability company..you now have to locum as a PAYE and are taxed as source.. basically you cannot claim your expenses again -which usually helps to reduce tax bill.
Exceptions are usually highly skilled consultants.

IR35 is tax legislation that is designed to combat tax avoidance by workers supplying their services to clients via an intermediary, such as a limited company, but who would be an employee if the intermediary was not used. Such workers are called 'disguised employees' by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.

Lol. There’s nothing to be ashamed about your outgoings.

It’s a good thing you are being open about it as you will learn from others on how to reduce it.

I think the key areas where your funds are going to is rent and nigeria expenses.

I do not understand why you should give money to your grandparents monthly. Isn’t that your parents’ responsibility? I understand if it’s an occasional gift - say during festive period but putting both your parents and grandparents on a monthly wage is really stretching things.

If you were paying a mortgage, trust me, you won’t be forking out more than £600 a month. However you are paying 1k and what’s more annoying is that you are paying off your landlord’s mortgage and leaving him with a decent profit.

Why do you need 2 cars when you spend another c£250 on train costs?

Have you dissolved the company ?

If it’s still active with companies house, you will still need to do a corporation tax return and annual return (I think it’s now called personal confirmation statement) at the end of your financial year whether or not you did any work through the company.

We have one car,DH drives for work,I ride on the train.my work is very very far..joys of training.
My parents were doing great till there was a job loss, so basically most of the things they could do like a breeze they cannot do now so I have to do them.
Before ,we used to send to DH parents regularly and mine occasionally because they didn't need it but now ehh their eyes don red gann.We give equal amounts to both sides,my grand parents are the only ones alive so we have to care for them as my parents are now unable to.
My siblings are not really contributing cos they(brothers) always say they are broke & have to cater for their children ,the rest are minors.Dh siblings try to contribute for theirs..but the ones that don't really have also ask us for help and we chip in when we can..
Its hard but can't see a way out for now.

I cannot wait to start paying this heavenly mortgage..need peace of mind and freedom from rent

i dunno why the locum agency was so excited for me to use a company, Probably because they were recommending their in-efficient accountants...I found the whole process too tedious and bureaucratic

i did, the accountants did that i guess...
i had to do something some weeks ago when they said i was owing 200 pounds. The accountants sorted it, but i sorted out the self assessment myself and they did say i overpaid about 250 pounds tax and asked for my bank details...Are they going to credit me??

You are very lucky..
I do not know what I have done to deserve the husband God blessed me with. All these expenses come from family purse..maybe because when we were sending to mainly his own side I was enthusiastic and encouraging grin

Managing my family financially just suddenly became heavier(they never ever used to ask for anything,so giving them was once in a while and they would take hesitantly while telling us to arrange our lives first),we just took it in stride & readjusted our budget.Dh never ever complains..My in-laws too wonderful..so honestly money going back to naija for them no de pain too much..the stray ones maybe though

Well, what can you do, just make sure your kids don't dump you lot in a care home when it's their turn to rep, the way the British treat their own parents

grin grin that's why there's a pension and we hopefully will have our own cash to fall back on plus that elusive house of our own..

This is absolutely correct! Take care of where you and your immediate family live permanently and spend most of your time first. Then anything extra should be for Naija. Ton's of folks from here (USA), UK, etc. build homes in Naija and they barely spend a month out of the whole year in it. Even my own brother sef. His HUGE house built last year in Naija is locked up, as he lives in the UK with his family. Only visits Naija 2 - 3 times a year.

Ralphlauren:

You live and work in the UK.

Your kids all live and school here.

Buying/owning your own home here in the UK should take priority over building or owning a home in nigeria.

Building in nigeria isn’t cheap and it comes with a lot of headache. People will try real hard to reap you off.

Why spend £40,000 on a home in nigeria that you will end up visiting barely 2 weeks in a year when you are paying rent (effectively paying someone’s else mortgage) in the UK.

Get a mortgage (especially one that allows you overpay at least 10% of the outstanding sum in a year) and you will be amazed that in 10years, you will own the home outrightly.

Mortgage rates are low at the moment. Take advantage of it before things change.

What if one lives to be as old as Mama Charlie, will it still be significant.

400k in Abuja

Forgot to talk about NHS
regular power, water and other fun stuff here which is luxury in Nigeria, eg drinking tap water

Nigeria is fun, only if you are mega-rich
But, then its less depressing in a way sha, despite all the hardness....probably due to community love

That's good. But let's face it - An overwhelming majority in Nigeria will not smell close to that a month. So, you may be in a very good field that pays that much, and that's good. Unfortunately to live very comfortable in Nigeria one needs to be REALLY making a lot of money. And still that does not even guarantee the basic comforts of life...as well all know how things are in Nigeria.

Just weigh your options and determine if you will live a better life and have peace of mind in Canada or Nigeria.

My sister. It’s well.

I agree that the buying the property will give you peace of mind and a sense of fulfilment.

An increase in your joint monthly income will also help.

Awitan, they will say UK people are stingy. I hope the anti-UK brigade can see how much money you spend on supporting family and friends in nigeria.
