bjayNL: If you really love Geology, then I would advise the first option. When I interviewed for a visa, the guy in front of me was going for bachelors in nursing after obtaining a bachelors here in a different field. He couldn't scale through. It is often difficult to give a convincing reason acceptable to the VOs for this kind of switches. Apply to average schools that are affordable (upward of four schools) and if you score okay on GRE, you should have a good chance. best of luck! |

BornAgainMay: You may not stand a very good chance with top schools, but with a good GRE, average schools could accept you in a Masters program. |

Champ10n: Nobody requires you to carry cash. However a little cash will be handy depending on how will get to your final destination. Ensure that the school accepts the means of making the payment. You should be fine. |

buddwizer: I am surprised somebody answered YES to this question. I was not asked of any bank statement at all. The VO looked at the I20 and saw that expense was covered. You should not be needing any bank statement. 2 Likes |

Adeneyagrofeeds: I do not think that your future applications will be jeopardized in any way. However, it would be wise to email the embassy and get a more trusted reply. |

I was interviewed by the white man on glasses in window 6, after denying the first 3 persons before me. My transcript as follows VO: How are you? Me: I'm fine? You? VO: I'm good, Hope you had a wonderful night? Me: (In my mind,i was like wa sere omo) It was good Sir VO: I can see you are going for a masters degree at New Mexico Highlands University? Me: Yes VO: Whats your major Me: Environmental Geology VO: Why New Mexico Highlands University? Me: I choosed NMHU because it offers me a new dimension to my current research, i have an ongoing research on Transport Mechanism of ground water contaminant within aquifers in Niger Delta, the school incorporate a geospatial application into the study of environmental geology and the school also own a geospatial research laboratory which.....(vo cuts in) VO: What will this degree do for you? Me: Last year at the World Economic forum, Nigeria ranked 133 out of 180 countries in terms of Enviromental performance index. This programme would equip me with the right skill to improve Nigeria's Environmental Performance Index.(VO cuts in) VO: When did you finish your first degree and which school did you attend? Me: 2015, University of Port Harcourt VO: Did you write any exam? Me; Yes, I wrote TOEFL, GRE was waived. VO: Who is your sponsor? Me; My dad VO: Can i have his SOA and what is he into? Me: (Passes the SOA).... He imports fish from Norway VO: (got a bit relaxed, starts looking vividly at the SOA) what type of fish? Me: He imports tilapia, scrumbia, titus fish and all sort of fish. VO: But a lot of people here like smoked fish? Me: Yes, they smoke the imported fish too VO: (Closed the passage between us,left with the SOA) I'll be right back, he left for about 3-mins. As soon as he came back....He returned the SOA and said i'll be approving your visa, circled my pick up location, gave me the white slip and kept my internationa passport. As Twood always say, be specific about your study plans and intention, make the interview all about yourself. Thanks to everyone that i learnt from on this forum, God bless you all. I still think there is need to reiterate that the place of prayer can not be overemphasized , be confident and be consistent when answering questions. Also ensure you fill your ds160 by yourself , please. 15 Likes 2 Shares |

EZEIGBO1OFIMO: It will be harder going forward, but not impossible. This is why I always advocate... go to top schools and for programs with good job prospects. Nigerian students who were here circa 2009-2011 can explain better. 1 Like 1 Share |

k199192: CONGRATULATIONS! Excited for you and welcome to the next phase of your life. Use it well! Glad you found the advice useful, don’t forget to pass on the experience to someone else. Hehe I’ve been sunning myself in good old Arizona the last few days... little time to log on here as much as I used to. The changes are simply to tighten the existing work visa rules. I think the real issue is to stop the ongoing abuse by large Indian body shops. 8 Likes |

NothingDoMe: Money is not number 1 bro unless you mean money for application, GRE testing and all. As far as the education and fee payment is concerned, there are people who did not go to America with one naira and they are studying or have completed their studies with full funding. The secret lies in having a stellar GPA in your undergrad, choosing the right school, choosing the right course of study and aceing your standardized test. There are lots of fund for education in the US. STEM courses are also well funded. It is left for you to access these funds. Try and get good grades in your undergraduate study (4.00 and above, better if you get a !st class), do well on the GRE (by well, I mean 165/170 Q and 160/170V and above), apply to the right school (use gradcafe to look at profile of student admitted in your score range), apply to atleast 6 schools. It also applies to student going for undergraduate studies. If you do well in your WAEC, ace the SAT and apply to the right schools, you will find out that you do not need money to study in the US. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

My visa was denied on friday 22nd of december..chop my eye. Actually i messed up. Lost all the confidence soon as i got to her front. One slim unsmiling white lady. Interview was short like MI. After the holidays on 25th and 26th, i was able to pay for another appointment yesterday 27th. The issue now is classes starts on the 10th but the earliest date i could get was the 16th of January. Apparently, i cannot request for an emergency interview. Please what can i do? What are my options? Shey my village people never get me like this? |

Lamexx: You are right but not all courses give your "full funding and stipends". So if my course does not give "full funding and stipends", it will be wise for me to seek alternative funding opportunities rather than have fake hope of getting the "full funding and stipends". Your assertion is valid but it doesn't work for all courses - not even all STEM courses. |
