OK to settle this let's bring out students from each and let hit a debate but I know public will win. look bross public university produce brain boxes ooh. no tryam I tell abi na badkok or convent uni u wan take try Abu Ibadan or nsukka. abi na unimaid. look my guy shoes get size. the kind prof way public get private uni can't afford. it like comparing private uni to Oxford or MIT, na craz. boy it not about just money some gurru will rather volunteer to do research in public university to earn the glory and name which in turn educate the students from public university. privates do not get this privileges.

You don't need to do that. Yes, I know public universities produce brain boxes. But that is no reason for you to undermine the private university students.
You won't normally see a private university student creating a thread like this. Because we have nothing to prove. You guys, on the other hand are always attacking us.
As for research, I won't stress myself. Check out Covenant University professors.

You gerrit. Individual effort is very important. However, we can overrule the impact of one's school in the individual. You sure know there would be a huge difference between a graduate of Harvard Law and Unilag Law.
Never you compare a whole IVY league University with our mushroom universities in naija....university of Ghana is even better than the best university in Nigeria which is UI

I attended a federal uni and I must say its the best to me.. Its challenging quite alright but it has really shaped me and made me discover who I am.. If I had gone to a private school I would have been naive. In federal uni you struggle to pass..that's why most times federal uni graduates are very smart and have confidence.. Op you have no point and you make no sense

Infact this post is a perfect example because it could only have been put together by a product (student or graduate) of a failed institution, I mean u gave points and reasons, five in total but none to buttress the Academic advantage of your public universities over private. zero research, void of relevant fact, shallow reasoning, Myopic analysis, wait do you even have sense at all may God not let my children suffer what you suffered that made you become like this.

I am sorry for you, campus fun, hard work, mature graduates bla bla bla so thats what a university is all about to you, grow up man what are you 12 years old

I dont know why you re taking this personal. I just stated what happened. Some people can be argued with. But i cant argue with someone like you. It would be fruitless.
Have you attended babcock or you re just speaking from what you read online or what someone told you?

I am enjoying my life in babcock. And i have done a lot more than my unilag counterparts.

Please dont quote me

You can't spill BS on the cyberspace and refrain others from qouting you. No one is taking anything personal here. You've never studied at Unilag but you're convinced you've done a lot more than you counterparts in Unilag. Does that make sense to you?

Now, I've never been to Babcock but on this same forum, one of you colleagues wouldn't cease to bore us with epistles of injustice being melt upon you all and the way the management is being dubious with the NUC accreditation team by halting some bona-fide students from attending classes till after accreditation. The guy was pained and full of regrets. How unfortunate! I can help you with the source as soon as I return from church. I know it wouldn't change much either, you've got to defend your frail school.

Happy Sunday bro! Cheers.

This is thrash and i wonder how many times this crap will be addressed on here. I attended a public state university which i'm proud of in some ways. However if my parents were more financially buoyant i would rather goto ABUAD or CU due to facilities and conducive environment. What do you mean by mature graduates? Is it the freedom to smoke at will, cultism, non-challant attitudes to academics by not coming to class for a whole session or the incessant sexual harassment of female students by Lecturers? Is that what make you a matured graduate?

Don't be deceived university can only enlighten you, you build yourself.

Op,thank God you said "some". I wish we can have someone who served (nysc) in a public uni to open the dearth these uni are facing.

From experience, either private or public, education in Nigeria is wack. Yes,I mean nothing to write home about. The lecturers who can't do research or write good papers for the advancement of education and the country. All you see them do is copy and paste. If I tell you what I witnessed during my service year in a public institution, you will source for funds and send your kids to study abroad.

Op,education in Nigeria is not about private or public. The wrath is evident in our society where graduates cannot defend their certificates. Forget about lecturers, they have failed to impact knowledge because they don't have it either. All they wait for is,salary and promotion.

Op,if you want to hear the truth, all uni in Nigeria especially UI,OAU,Lag,UNN etc are all living on past glory. Quote me anywhere.
Which one did you attend, private or public
Can you defend your certificate?

The problem is we already have this screwed believe that we must suffer and pass through stress before making it in this country. What arr the challenges that Federal university thought you that someone in a private school cannot gain? Is it the incessant and avoidable victimisation of students by sadist lecturers? Or is it the various hostels that looks like slums and where animals are kept? Is it the unending strike? You guys have no tenable point. I was went to OAU for a competition sometime last year, i went to their male hostel (Adekunle Fajuyi),the students staying in that kind of hostel are animals i swear to God. They don't know that graduates of private unis are getting good jobs because of their parents status in the country.
Imagine a graduate of CU, AU, BELLS or PAN AM hustling for jobs.
A friend told me about how two girls who lives in her compound got jobs and eight months later, the bought their own cars.
I was like what kind of jobs could that be?, more over which university did they graduated from?.
She said CU, she said all their friends who are also students of CU are now employed.
Even the woman said if she could raise enough money, her girls too will school at CU.
My daughter is currently at Bells and I'm happy about it, I cannot allow my child to past through what I passed through, especially the accommodation situation and the ASUU palaver.
You are partially correct.
But your parents position in society won't always help you. And not everyone who attends a private university has 'rich' parents. Some go there on scholarships, some can afford it, but just barely.
The thing is, you also get to meet people and get connected to sources that could help you in the future. And the higher quality of education can also help you start up something on your own.

Timmmy:
If you look beyond the ASUU strikes in public universities, you'll see several benefits these schools have over their private counterparts.

In Nigeria, there is a general belief that private universities are far better than public varsities.
This belief is strengthened by the epileptic ASUU strikes and internal crises in public higher institutions across the country.

Usually, when a crisis does not get to the point of pausing the academic progression of the students and shutting the school gates, the crisis doesn't get resolved. These are parts of the reasons why some parents choose to send their wards to private universities. However, if you look beyond the ASUU strike in public universities, you will see several benefits these schools have over their private counterparts.

These benefits range from cheaper school fees to freedom to become an adult and exposure to the real world before becoming a graduate. The bulk of private university graduates don't have such exposure and experience.

So here are five reasons you should consider public university if you are seeking admission.

1. Cost of Education
The first thing people get to know about private universities is not the facilities they have but their school fees. Some private schools tuition fee is enough to build a house elsewhere. On the other hand, cost of education is very cheap.
Apart from this, cost of living in public university is also cheap as students are allowed to either patronise campus shops or those on the streets where prices are competitive. This is not allowed as some private universities will even punish students for having foodstuff in their hostel.

2. Freedom and Independence
Undergraduates in public universities enjoy some degrees of freedom as they are not kept under stringent rules on how to live on campus.
Private Universities have so many amusing rules that keep their students under the prying eyes of the management. No freedom, no independence, just students shuttling between lecture rooms and hostels. Private universities force their laws down the throat of their students as they have rules guiding everything. Private school is that entity that treats adults like kids by giving them rules on what to eat, how to dress and when to worship.

3. Campus Fun
Some Private universities are dry and are utterly devoid of campus fun. In public universities, you have parties to attend, meet real people, rich and poor; and even join socio-cultural associations like the Kegites groups.
Dating is also fun as students couple enjoy their relationship without being punished for expressing love. You can not do this in some private universities. In fact, some private universities frown at students of opposite sex hugging each other.

4. Public University encourages hard work
Some lecturers' nonchalant attitudes to work in public universities propel students to work hard to succeed.

For instance, a lecturer that comes to class only to give out handouts expects the students to impress him in their exams. Those lecturers who do not come to class regularly because of other commitments also expect good performance from the students. These students are denied a lot of things yet, they come out with good grades. On the other hands, private university students have almost everything to facilitate their education, yet, some of them are no match for public school graduates who are screwed to success.

5. Public university produces mature graduates
Everything public university undergraduates go through in the hands of their lecturers and the university system toughens and prepare them for the life after graduation. They understand life more on campus through the many challenges they go through. The same can not be said about private university undergraduates, most of whom only see life through one prism of their parents' wealth and lecturers' soft approaches to everything. They hardly make decisions for themselves. It is either their parents make it for them or the school management does.

You all should be shouting, no wonder the government refused to renovate public schools, go out and see how a univeristy should look like. I once went to ABUAD to visit my uncle, you need to see how conducive the place is, why won't the students excel? How many public univeristies have good facilities expecially for science students? Arrant nonsense.

Yes i attended a public university which is doing well in some areas but i won't dare compare it with top private schools, it is delusional. My kids ain't going to any public univeristy in this country.

I'm going to public university, but if God help and I have enough money none of my children will attend a school in this country and if they do, it will never be a government owned university. If you guys are talking about better educational performance, I can say both private and public institutions are the same, we both cram and pour.

I'm going to public university, but if God help and I have enough money none of my children will attend a school in this country and if they do, it will never be a government owned university. If you guys are talking about better educational performance, I can say both private and public institutions are the same, we both cram and pour.
My point exactly, i attended a public university but i wont dare compare to top private universities. We all cram and pour, development is personal.

I had admission into FUTO. I rejected it and did an A Level programme in Uniport, then gained 200 level admission into Mechanical engineering. I still rejected it and went private.
And most private universities release their admission lists before public universities. By the time the public universities are admitting students, their counterparts in private universities would have even matriculated or started exams. So what are you saying?
Most of you don't even know what you're saying. You believe everything people tell you.
don't mind some of these idiots....wat maturity ll attending public school do to one....is it d useless sadist tutors who ll give useless marks or d fact dat u can spend beyond time in public schools the writer of this is very stupid....instead writing ways of making public school function well vis a vis ensuring students graduate wen due,get Diet due marks always and wats u are here disturbing private schools......i don't know hw useless articles like this make front page.....

You know Unilag didn't offer you admission. Please, accept my condolence. Persuade yourself all you can by saying you are ahead. Equally let the world know you're ahead just by the academic calendar and nothing more. How would you opt for that Seven Days Adventist school to face hell for four years and at the end, have nothing tangible to show for it? If you had written Covenant, I may have kept my cool but Babcock? You know you aren't enjoying that hellish experience right now.
wats special in unilag..nonsense

Exactly, personal development is the main point
