Let's hope things go well on the local scene this year. now that Victor Mbaoma and Oche Salefu have returned to Remo stars after their failed move to Mfm coupled with Sunday Faleye who is lost in a transfer tussle between 3Sc and the academy that owns him, nor forgetting Jude aneke who is with Ikorodu united, we hope the competition in the NNL becomes hotter and interesting.

lets wish for less of walkover, banished teams, abandoned matches and violence in stadia. more of fair play, publicity and transparency, more away wins like that of last season and hopefully a team from NNL wins the Aiteo cup and represent 9ja at the 2019 Confederations cup. *winks*

Quick Stats : Errrm FCT does not have any team in the top 2 divisions of league football in the country, this was after FRSC and Fc Abuja got relegated from the NNL northern division last season. Fc Abuja was the last to appear in the Npfl while FRSC have only been as high as NNL.

Having topnotch passing ability in the Portuguese league does not mean retaining it in the EPL. The fast pace of the EPL makes many a player struggle to replicate their precious abilities in other leagues there.

Also, if that's all he has to offer, then he might want to consider upgrading himself in other aspects of the game, e.g. tackling, interception, clearances etc. Ndidi is leading (or one of those leading) the league in one or two of these.

I see what you mean though, there should be no complacency for Ndidi. Work on your weaknesses, improve on your strengths.

These were the occasions that took the breath away, that encapsulated an unforgettable narrative, or that had historical impact beyond the moment in which they were bound.

Which of these moments left the biggest impression on you this year?

Cameroon's Africa Cup of Nations final comeback: The Indomitable Lions, traditional African giants, ended a 15-year wait to win the continent's grandest club prize when they defeated Egypt in the February in Libreville.

Hugo Broos's side headed into the tournament billed as the worst Cameroon side in a generation but steadily improved throughout the tournament, eliminating both Senegal and Ghana in the knockouts.
Nonetheless, they were outsiders heading into the final against Egypt, and even more so when Mohamed Elneny put the Pharaohs ahead after 22 minutes and centre-back
Adolphe Teikeu was replaced with injury after half an hour.
However, demonstrating the remarkable team spirit that had seen them overcome the odds repeatedly through the tournament, Cameroon rallied in the second half, with Nicolas Nkoulou equalising just before the hour mark.

Vincent Aboubakar - a player overlooked by Broos for much of the tournament - stepped up to the fore at the death, pirouetting to slam a delicious volley past Essam El-Hadary two minutes from time.



Nigeria 4-2 Argentina: Another comeback that we can't overlook is the Super Eagles' recent triumph over heavyweights Argentina.

It may have just been a friendly, but there's history between these two sides, and sentiment runs deep.

When La Albiceleste tore into a 2-0 lead, it looked as though much of the progress made and the invincibility established under Gernot Rohr had been exposed.

However, demonstrating the kind of resolve that they'd hinted at but never actually needed to employ during their World Cup qualifying campaign, the Eagles responded in some style, ultimately bouncing back to win 4-2 after an Alex Iwobi double and goals from Brian Idowu and Kelechi Iheanacho.

2017 was a year of many outstanding Nigeria performances, and the victory over Cameroon could easily have made this list.
Nonetheless, the Eagles' second-half showing against Argentina was a joy to behold, and demonstrated that, even against the very best at the World Cup, Rohr's young team have the quality to win and...crucially...to bounce back in the face of adversity.


Ahmad replaced Hayatou after 29 years: The single most momentous day of the year in African football - and an argument could be made that it was the biggest landscape shift in the continent's game in several decades - came on March 16 2017.

That was the day when Africa's delegates voted to end Issa Hayatou's seven-term reign as head of the continent's footballing governing body, and instead point Madagascar's Ahmad Ahmad in his stead.

The 57-year-old has promised to bring about meaningful change following the three-decade reign of Hayatou, although it will take time to judge whether the Malagasy chief will truly be a force for positive change within CAF.



Keita Balde's hat-trick: There are several moments of outrageous individual brilliance from African players during 2017, with Naby Keita's winner against the Ivory Coast and Sofiane Boufal's strike against West Bromwich Albion both deserving of an honourable mention.
However, neither of those two achievements quite matched what Balde achieved on April 23 2017.

The 22-year-old Balde has flattered to deceive at times during his career to date, since being axed from a Barcelona youth team tour in 2010 after playing a practical joke on a teammate.

While there have been signs that he was primed to finally deliver on his outrageous talent after signing for Lazio in 2013, it was only this season that fans of the continental game were treated to an absolute Balde masterclass.

During a remarkable month from the end of April until the end of May, Keita scored eight in five Serie A games for Lazio, kicking off his sensational run with a hat-trick against Palermo - the fastest in the history of the Italian top flight - in a 6-2 triumph.

The fact that Balde scored three goals between the 21st and the 26th minute obviously earned him the affection of the Lazio fans again after a testing time between the two parties, while a double in the subsequent derby victory over AS Roma was an ideal tonic after some fraught months of contractual disputes.
Ultimately, the Senegal international departed Lazio for Monaco, but his outstanding spell of form in April and May demonstrated that he may yet be Africa's next great footballing superstar.



Mohamed Salah vs. Congo-Brazzaville: Surely the greatest moment in African football this year came in October, when Salah single-handedly fired Egypt to their first World Cup since 1990, ending a 28-year wait for a return to the grandest stage of all.

Comfortably the Pharaohs' outstanding player, the attacker had already scored three of Egypt's five goals en route to their penultimate fixture, notably beating Denis Onyango in Alexandria to see the North African giants past a dogged Uganda side.
Against Congo, with the tantalising prospect of a World Cup berth just a win away, Salah fired Egypt into the lead before they duly threatened to throw it away when Arnold Bouka Moutou equalised in the 88th minute.

A 95th minute penalty awarded for the hosts offered the prospect of redemption, and it was Salah, undeterred throughout, who stepped up to slam the spot kick home past Barel Mouko to end the Pharaohs' wait for the World Cup and prompt outrageous scenes of celebration across the country.

For the intensity, the drama, the narrative and, most importantly, the historical significant, it surely has to be the greatest moment in African football this year.

At the end of the 2016/17 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season, 4 out of the 20 teams dropped into the Nigeria National League (NNL) while four new teams took their places in the top division.

Remo Stars, Gombe United, ABS FC, and Kastina United were the new boys for the last season and out of the four only Kastina United escaped the drop back into the lower division with Remo stars (20), Gombe (19) and ABS (18) making up the last 3 while Shooting Stars FC completed the relegation zone.

The NPFL spots of the afore-mentioned teams were taken by the newly promoted teams which include former NPFL champions Heartland Fc of Owerri, Yobe Desert Stars of Damaturu, Go Round Fc of Omoku and Kwara United of Ilorin.

■ Heartland FC



Location: Owerri, Imo state
Last NPFL appearance: 2016
Home Ground: Dan Anyiam Stadium
Best NPFL Finish: 5-time winners (last triumph in 1993)




The Naze Millionaires were relegated in 2016 in controversial circumstances after the team abandoned its final league game against Plateau United.

A goal which gave Heartland a 2-1 lead was cancelled by referee Folorunsho Ajayi making the team abandon the game with 15 minutes left and was subsequently punished by the League Management Company (LMC) who awarded 3 points and 3 goals to Plateau United ensuring that the 2009 CAF Champions League finalists were relegated for the first time in their history.

However, the team only spent one season in the Nigeria National League (NNL ) finishing first on the Southern Division log after an impressive 61 points from 32 games which include 18 wins, 7 draws and 7 loss.

A finish in the continental places or the top 6 of the table at the end of the season wouldn’t flatter Heartland considering their pedigree in the league, and the Chibuzo Etuemena led team are highly unlikely to be involved in the relegation dogfight this season.

■ Kwara United



Location: Ilorin, Kwara State.
Last NPFL Appearance: 2015
Home Ground: Kwara State Stadium
Best NPFL finish: 3rd in Super Four (2006)

While Kwara state fans may rue the drop of ABS, they might take solace in the promotion of Kwara United whose promotion ensured that top flight football continues in Kwara for at least another year.

The harmony Boys were relegated in 2015 and spent the next few seasons in the relegation wilderness before former Nigeria u20 coach John Obuh led the team to the promise land.

Kwara inspired by the high scoring striker and NNL best player for 2017 season, Micheal Ohanu who scored 22 goals, topped the Northern division of the NNL where they got promoted with four games to spare.

Going into the new NPFL season a lot will be expected from the young striker Ohanu to keep the team afloat with his goals, the former Ifeanyi Uba player scored 3 hattricks last season and a replica of such performances should be enough to see his team avoid immediate relegation.

With a manager who has NPFL experience after managing Sharks FC and Enugu Rangers in the past, Kwara United may fancy a finish in the top half of the table.

■ Yobe Desert Stars



Location: Damaturu, Yobe.
Home Ground: Damaturu Township Stadium.
Last NPFL Appearance: 2001
Best NPFL finish: 20th

After 15 years of absence from topflight football, Yobe Desert Stars return to NPFL.

The Desert Stars had a terrible campaign to forget in their first and only top flight experience till date. The Damaturu based side won only 11 games in the 2001 campaign to immediately return to the lower leagues where they have since shuffled.

Consecutive promotions from the Nigeria Nationwide League to the NNL and from the NNL to the NPFL could give their fans hope of a decent Campaign, at least a better one than that of 2001.

Much wouldn’t be expected of the less fancied side as they are expected to the boo boys of the League alongside fellow promoted side, Go Round FC. A finish above the relegation zone will be considered a good season.

■ Go Round Fc



Location: Omoku, Rivers State
Home Ground: Krisdera Hotel Stadium
Last NPFL Appearance: NIL
Best NPFL Finish: NIL

The only debutant in the league for the 2018 season, Go Round FC are based in Omoku, Rivers state.

Go round secured promotion on the last day of the Southern Divison of the NNL campaign last season finishing second behind Heartland Fc. Relatively unknown, the stats don’t give good omen for the newcomers, of the 3 debutants promoted to the NPFL in the last 2 seasons 2 of them returned to relegation immediately.

Remo Stars, Ikorodu United and MFM were promoted for the first time in their histories in the last 2 seasons and only MFM managed to escape relegation in its first ever season in the NPFL. In fact only one of the promoted teams last season escaped relegation.

However, Coach Ngozi Elechi will hope to lead the team to a decent first top-flight season by avoiding relegation

Iheanacho finally returns to the bench. Well, thanks for that. Really don't know which is worse. Being left out by Puel or being left out by Pep. All the same shaa, Nacho still oozes quality when on the field of play despite little or no playing time. But I am not happy with his situation. Dude needs playing time. Plenty of it and honestly I would have preferred he stayed back at Man City learning more from pep and getting a few games than being left out in the cold at Leicester under Puel.

The change of coaches at Leicester really did nacho in here. Wish him a better 2018 though. No EPL goal in 2017 because of very little chances and also injury. Really not one to remember. But he still finished as The Super Eagles' top scorer for the second year in a row... That says a little something about his quality.



Adrien Silva won't displace Ndidi oooo. Ndidi is the Kante of that team. Adrien competes with Iborra and Matty. Ofcos Puel may sometimes choose Adrien Silva and Iborra together but Ndidi is workaholic and Puel's words after Ndidi's first red card sums it up.

"Unfair and harsh to lose a workaholic player like Ndidi putting us a man down."

Puel just cannot do without Ndidi.

If he knows what's good for him he will ask for a loan move somewhere for him to get more playing time..even if its the championship...Musa too should do the same... It won't be fair if they both make our world cup squad while warming the bench at Leicester due to their experience in the national team at the expense of other players who are consistent at their club
