The players who covered most ground per match last season. No Manchester United player.

Mourinho has to learn not to pamper and over protect players.

That list is not correct.

Here you go mate.

You're right. He said that. Actually, I've given Pirlo and Vidal the most praise in that midfield when I was putting out my defence on why we shouldn't buy Pogba for 89m. I side with Scholes on this one that Pirlo was the major midfielder controller at Juventus, though I don't agree that Pogba was just a runner for that team. Pogba controlled the game too but not as good as the majestic Pirlo. The runner for me is Vidal with his boundless energy.

But you cunningly neglected the part he said "he's the player to win you games". Not every midfielder will control the midfield like Pirlo, it doesn't take away their value for the team. Pogba can't control the midfield like KDB or Xavi, I agree, but he's a goal threat, intelligent and can control the midfield to a good extent.

Where is the Paul Pogba we saw at Juventus? He was all over the pitch, he was battling, he was tackling, he was sprinting to people, he was scoring goals from 25 yards out.
"He is just strolling through games."

Scholes added:
. "Pogba doesn't look fit. I wonder whether he is training properly.
"He does not look like a player who will win you games and that is what you pay £90m for.

"No-one in England should be getting near him, but he is being asked to do a role he is not comfortable in.
What do you think about this line too? If we wanted a Bakayoko performance we would have gone for him, but when you pay 89m the player has to repay the faith no babysitting.

Scholes went ahead to offer a solution, that he's probably played where he's not comfortable. If this is not constructive, I don't know what is.

The training and all is a dig at Mourinho. Mourinho should sit his ass down and make his players hungry for success.

Away from the system, you saw Pogba play like he did at Juventus, long range shots, purposeful take on, quick passes etc...You can say it's down to the system but the timing of the performance seems like an effect of Scholes criticism.

Is there any doubt about that! When I said I stood with paulo yesterday I already felt something akin to this scenario was loading! When world class talks then world class listens....its natural!

What is the 6 sec rule?

It's rule implemented by Pep at Barcelona where he tasked his players "to recover a misplaced pass or lost ball from their opponents under 6 secs". What we saw was a high octane pressing from the entire team once they lost a ball, rushing opponents like a pack of wolves, and inevitably forcing them to kick away the ball (or give away the ball in dangerous positions like Fabregas against Barcelona which Arsenal were punished for) under immense pressure which his players will then collect and recycle, and start dominating you all over again.

If Messi loses the ball, he chases the player with the ball, while Eto, Xavi, Iniesta, Busquet and Co closes down "the free players of the opponents" which the opponent with ball will pass to. He's now forced to kick the ball away or give it to his goalie to kick it away. Once the goalie does that, Pique, Busquet and other defenders win it back fast and continues dominating again. It's why Pep hardly lose possession, it's how he defends, and it's no surprise that City are playing with that same style

What is the correct list?

Please don't produce total distance covered which favours players who play more games.

Distance covered per game is what is needed.

I actually watched the punditry after the southampton game and scholes was saying that he watched a lot of pogba at juventus and that pogba was never a midfield controller... all he did was run around while pirlo pulled the strings

Essentially Pogba = Ramires with a fancy haircut.

Actually, even last season, United covered the least ground among the top 5. In short don't be surprised if for the last 4 seasons, we've covered the least grounds amongst the top 5. That's been the theme of our play for years now. We play lazy football. We start brightly, score and start loitering about, soaking up pressure. It's what we've complained about that Jose has to add more urgency and speed to our game play. We have to have to attack more, close down opponents faster so we can snuff any threat they will unleash. That's one thing Tottenham, Chelshit, City and Co have over us.

Guardiola has implemented the "6 secs rule" and it's working like Magic for City. Mourinho needs to make this guys press harder as a way of defending.
God bless you, our pressing game is wack that's why we hardly recover the ball in dangerous positions thus we had to travel a distance to get to the opponents goal before which they have already reorganized...
We have players who are fast and young, they should be made to press more. Yesterday, after we scored, we dropped the tempo and almost conceded an equalizer, it's only when we scored the second goal that we managed to take hold of the game.

Spot on. I pointed out during the City match that both City and US were losing possession in OUR OWN HALF. City's pressing game forced us to be backed into our corner. This meant that we're losing possession to City in our own half (dangerous area) and City were losing possession (the few times they did) in our own half too, but it's a SAFE AREA for City because of the words I emboldened in your post.

It basically meant that City will require less distance to hurt us, while we'll have to suffer and travel more to reach the distance to hurt them.

Stats are very interesting. I saw distance covered per game of Champions League 2013/2014, Matic was by far the highest in the whole of Europe. He covered over 13km per match, equivalent to what Valencia used to cover when playing in the wing. Pogba was number 8 that year. Pogba was ahead of Vidal and Salah in the top ten.

If Pogba and Matic maintained same distance, Matic would be number one in EPL with no close rival. And Pogba would just be behind Kante on the table.

AN ARTICLE FROM LAST SEASON
....

As something of a physical marvel in a Jose Mourinho team, the expectation would be that Pogba would be able to impose himself on games. Pogba has been able to do that in some games, particularly in the draw at West Ham where he was very direct with his running indeed.

But he's not been able to do that on a consistent basis. He's well down the list in terms of distance covered in games. He's 84th in the league overall, 10.8km
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 10:12am On Jan 02, 2018
In 2013/2014, Pogba covered 11.5 km per game, in 2016/2017 he covered 10.8km.

We must agree these pundits (Scholes and co) have some stats we don't have or care about.

And you need fit players yo achieve this. Players that are ready to run for 90mins non stop.

it helps the defence and will surely win you a lot of games. It is not Mourinho style and that's where the problem is.

its either he adopts this style or invents something better as this his present style that I don't even understand again will not make us win the league in the near future.

Truth be told, JM was wrong to lash out on Scholes, coz the criticism was absolutely spot on. JM played attacking Football yesterday due to the Criticism and it panned out positively.

United didn't only win the Match, it was won in a fantastic, entertaining Manner. Lingard was on fire, Martial was displaying his Art, Pogba showed he's truly a Leader and World class Player.

We've said it severally on this Thread that JM needs to upgrade his Philosophy. He needs to adjusts his Game-Plan to suiting Players at his Disposal.

We are seeing Luke Shaw playing, thank to the Injury sustained by Valencia, and Young 3-Match Ban. Shaw has proven to be the right Personnel for the LB Position, and I expect JM to play him there for the Rest of the Season.

I was actually expecting JM to park the God damn Bus as usual, but he chose to attack and it paid off, hence attacking Scholes during the Post-Match Conference showed that; he was gingered and touched by the Criticism.

No one has run further in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League than Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne, but has anyone covered huge distances at a faster pace?

Kevin De Bruyne has run nearly 50km in four UEFA Champions League games

Who are the hardest-working players in the UEFA Champions League? Hard to tell, but what we can say without fear of contradiction is who has covered the most distance in this season's competition: Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne, with 48,052m in 360 minutes over the first four matchdays.

However, the Belgian's lung-busting average of 133.48m covered per minute is not the most punishing feat of athleticism in this season's competition. Christian Eriksen has played one match fewer than De Bruyne, but has made up for it by covering 37935m in his three games – 140.50m per minute, at an average speed of 8.43km/h.

Others have averaged higher speeds: Paris's Julian Draxler covered 19,815m in 139 minutes of football at a rate of 8.55km/h, while Napoli's Amadou Diawara was not much slower, covering 26,892m in 190 minutes (8.49km/h)
