Compliments of the season bro. Been a while. To be Frank with you, I do not know what happened to me on that day. I really felt I had a great chance as I flowed well with the VO before I suddenly went blank from no where. I went home that day and cried myself sour as I relayed my experience to my brother and friend @Mayorboi.

I am yet to defer till FALL 2018 as I do not know how best to put my words together to notify the school I was denied a visa. This is because I don't know how to ask them if the tuition waiver and free campus housing they offered me can still be available by the Fall semester.

In addition to this, does being denied an F1 visa twice (November and December) in any way have a dent on my next chance of reapplying? Cos I intend reapplying for another interview by FALL?

I will appreciate responses from you baba, from @Twoods, @Lagosismyhome and any other person who has answers to my question.

Compliments of the season handsome and beautiful people...

You should do two things - defer your admission but also look to see if you can obtain admission to higher tier schools. I stand to be corrected, I have yet to see a student with admission to Yale, Harvard or Princeton turned down for a US visa.

Funding for STEM PhD in the US works mostly this way: You will be given a tuition waiver and also a stipend that covers your living expenses in exchange for pursuing a PhD and working as a Teaching or Research Assistant. Heck, some schools even throw in health insurance and conference travelling allowance in too.
I don't know much about your sub-field of computing but your MSc, especially from a foreign university, should help mitigate any drawback of your BSc. GPA. Graduate admission is holistic and other parts of the application such as GRE, letters of recommendation, research experience are also considered.

In no particular order, these are the things you will need to give yourself a good chance:
1. Write GRE; A score above 320 is preferable, with at least 160 in Quant.
2. TOEFL. : Might not need this because your MSc if from the UK, but I will still advise you to write it and a score of at least 100 and 26 in the speaking section is desirable.
3. Get glowing Letters of recommendations from your former research supervisor and Professors.
4. Write a statement of purpose (SOP) addressing why you want to obtain a PhD and tailored to each school you are applying to.
5. Search for schools offering your course and that fit your profile. You don't want to be too ambitious, at the same time you shouldn't settle for mediocre schools.
6. Contact Professors in your area of research and mail them about your interest in joining their lab.
7. When all is said and done, you want to apply to at least 4 schools to spread your risk and improve your chances.

An exposition can be made about each of the different points above. This is just an overview. There is a need for you to research and learn how to accomplish each of these tasks. Therefore, make "Google" your friend. The resources are out there but you need to put the work in, find them and utilize them.

Oh thank you so much- this is so detailed! I have and can gain access to most of your stated requirements. And yes, google is a very good friend of mine, we go way bck! Thank you so much again! I have hopes on 2020, so I have time to gather.

I don’t really think your Bsc 2:2 would impact your chances as long as your masters GPA is good (3.5 and above)

I stand to be corrected tho

Thank you so much. I’m more confident now. cheesy

Doctorate degree is like an employment. So they have to see that you have what it takes to be invested on before they admit you. Combine with all what Time2Smile says, you would be interviewed by the adcom. Again, this is like an employment so you would automatically be working for your department. Lastly, it's called funding/fellowship/grant not scholarship.

Haha! Funding/Fellowship/Grant it is- can’t be getting our vocab wrong, can we?! Thanks for your response.

Hi,

@Ezeigbo1ofImo @time2smile and anyone that can help.

Wow I had no idea that STEM students could get a PhD Scholarship in America, I’m utterly impressed by that! I can so relate to the pain of paying for studies while everyone is on a scholarship- We were 6 in class and I was the only one that paid a tuition, it was so painful!

I have been silently considering a PhD in the US mostly Cos my field of computing (cultural computing/user studies) is more acknowledged in the US than the UK.

So do you guys think someone with a 2.2 and merit (BSc & MSc respectively) would be considered for a scholarship. That BSc result makes me not even bother with scholarships at all, and I was honestly preparing to pay the PhD tuition until I saw your comments. God bless you guys plenty.

I would be careful. Not all STEM Phds are paid for. The vast majority of paid STEM phds are in the biological sciences through NIEHS grants. I'm not sure the same is applicable to engineering phds. Also for international students, only your first year is paid. All other years are paid by your phd mentor so you should carefully choose only mentors who have adequate funding to pay for you.

All that to say - do your due diligence to check if funding is available to you or not.

Alright, thanks a lot. I’m not so accustomed to funding checks/searches in the US, but I feel it should be similar to the UK where you have the information you need on the website of the school or can just check at jobs.ac.uk (this website isn’t effective for funding in the US).

Basically, what I’m asking is if searching for what I want on the Uni’s website will be effective? (US Uni websites always suffer from information overload grin, most times I resort to finding what I need about a US Uni on google! grin).

Again, thanks for your response!

I simply call and ask. US websites can be quite vague, I agree.

If it too good to be true then there always a catch hidden in the small prints .... grin

But can't blame the lender...higher rates to cover the risk

Yeah. Just for those planning to take a loan to know those interests on a >$60k tuition add up quickly and it can take forever to pay back, even with a high-paying job straight out of school. I would rather still look around for a lower interest rate, or avoid taking a loan altogether of which I'm a proponent.

If you want to leave the country (permanently) immediately after your graduation, then think within the lines of Economics, Finance, Accounting (if you want to be a US CPA as US uses US GAAP while Nigeria uses IFRS). You can also choose specialized courses in these field, such as Developmental Economics, Quantitative Finance, etc.

If you plan to come back to Nigeria after your course, then don't bother travelling, just stay and smash your ICAN - it is more important than a Master's for you, for a finance job.

Hello house! I have a masters degree but thinking of going for another masters in the same course which is special Education with specialization in speech pathology.. reason is because there are some courses that are not available in Nigeria that were not taught which I intend to complete in the Usa . My question is if the second masters will not pose a red flag at the embassy, if yes ,is it advisable to go for a PhD considering the fact that there are some courses I need to take before admission.
Another thing is ...can i apply to schools without GRE?
Lastly ...is it advisable to go with children on a study visa? Thank you.....

Thank you all my good friends and to everyone who posted their transcripts and experiences for others to learn from. I got in few hours ago. The weather in texas feels great at the moment. I also met two nairalanders in my plane. Tosin kept my company during our stop over at Doha. We spent the new year cross over together. A very beautiful and down to heart kinda ladym Unfortunately Qatar didnt give us the accommodation they promised, they said the hotels in the airport where fully booked, and it will take 8hrs to issue us a transit visa to go outside the airport. Our flight was about 9hrs from Lagos to Doha.

My connecting flight was to Houston while hers was to Chicago. I met Sam, the 2nd nairalander in this flight which was 14 hours from Doha to Houston. We hope to visit the town later today.

Anyone in south west texas? Pm me.

All the best to those planning to come here too. If you need any help, I will be glad to assist if I can. Cheers
