I am not sure about learning welding and plumbing in Nigeria as that would most likely not be applicable here. Except maybe you have a city and guild certificate or ond or similar technical qualifications in welding and have hands on experience in industries like Hyundai Heavy, Nigerdock or other similar companies. Welding and plumbing are skilled and regulated professions in Canada.

Barbing though is not regulated. Black hair barbers are in high demand. Everytime i walk into one of the two barber shops I use in calgary, I have to wait atleast 2hrs before my turn. If I don't need any special style, I just call to book an appointment with an oyinbo barber. Those ones are always less busy.

Thanks for this response. So you mean even to fix ordinary broken pipe or lay out a lawn sprinkler will need certificates? grin this kind oyibo land.

Anyways, thanks for the response. I have started compiling a list of handy skills that can fetch cash after normal 'work' closes.

Please ladies, can you tell us how often you make your hair? How much? Can you tell us some other things you sometimes have to spend money on especially when it relates to hiring people?

I really want to offer my own services even if during spare time.

I may even own an establishment which may get jobs and sublet. I just hope.

Hello guys,

I see quite a lot of us are going to Cana in order to get white colar jobs.

Hardly anyone here talking about being a skilled professional in one niche or another.

Nobody talking about opening a salon, a workshop, a fashion house to sew aso ebis which I'm sure many of us will still want to rock at events, tech outlet, e.t.c.

Is it that we all want to be employees, or is it more expensive to own your own business?

Can we look at this angle and see if there are hot skills some of us can learn while awaiting ITA and PPR?

Welding, plumbing, barbing, sewing, hair dressing, gardening, wood work?

Aren't these good viable options?

Your thinking is so on point.

I do plan to open shop over there and sell items inported from China.

I have read a bit about their importation rules and hopefully it won't be too difficult to import non-regulated stuff as long as the quality is certified.

With Amazon and the likes available, I'm hoping success will be swift.

That said, it's unlikely I will leave Naija based on the aspirations of a side business. As Nigerians we need to start thinking of side hustle.

Seniors Maternal and Salford please what is the perception about people who do side business in addition to their employment. Is it something that is ethically or culturally frowned at? Also what is the ease of doing business especially with respect to import from China?

I've been in Canada since September. And the picture I sent was also taken in Canada. I took it at a staples store here in bc and paid for express delivery via Canada post to avoid delays.. The delay is so annoying. Is it advisable I contact Them?

Pls keep me posted if you eventually contact them. My card was approved on 25th Nov but yet to get it till date. I contacted them through CSE and no response till date.

Modified: they just replied my CSE.

I am surprised to hear this because people converting from ACCA to CPA contacted me and for some, we have gone beyond nairaland. I chat with some on WhatsApp and have been visited by 1. Have i also broken the rule? Infact i begged ballerz to come back on nairaland that people are asking for his assistance.

Please educate me on my limits. I no wan red card.

If you flood someone's house in the process of fixing a broken pipe, then you should expect lawsuits too.
No problem flooding your own house though aslong as you pay your bill. lol

Justwise, I think you folks need to be a little careful with subjective interpretations. While the intent is to drive/maintain traffic on this site, the value of this site solely depends on its contributors and content. Alot of valued contributors volunteer their time and knowledge.

Asking someone to contact you is not a reason to ban anyone in an open forum. What is the point of the PM function? I'd rather you encourage sharing openly than a ban unless you are Buhari.

Just my two cents.

Noo! $390 is still too pricey for G2 except you live in brampton. You should shop around and get a cheaper plan. Check with Desjarins insurance and look into suggestions others might have for you. Goodluck

M.Eng and M.Sc could mean the same thing and different things, depending on the school. so its best you use "course-based/non-thesis" and "thesis/research" masters degree to help us know exactly what you are talking about.

To the matter at hand, there are no hard rules to these things, I know of a number of first class that was bounced by low rated schools like MUN, and ended up getting admitted by a higher rated school like U of A.

all you need to be eligible for admission is a 2:1, but as we already discussed, even a first class wouldnt guarantee you an admission... and this is applicable to not just UBC alone.

a number of factors determine your chances.. for some schools, the main hurdle is your ability to get a professor willing to be your supervisor in your thesis based program.. some would even say if they have no funding for you, you wouldnt be admitted as they dont allow one to self sponsor in their thesis masters program. then of course other things like Statement of intent, strong academic references and having publications in renonwed journals(few naija students have this). so a school may pick a 2:1 student over a first class student as a result of the above.

I no more have the flare for a thesis based program, and even then, non-thesis masters typically doesnt have the aforementioned hurdles/prerequisite. often times, a CV, and professional reference is all that you would need for non thesis. cutting out the tedious work of mailing and calling professors you have never met, in a bid to show them why you would be a plus to their research team, so as to get them to agree to be your supervisor.

you have to decide what your interest is, research or professional work? co-op is usually found in course-based/non-thesis program. I wouldnt advise you apply to a school solely because you think it would be easier to land their admission... instead apply to multiple schools, perhaps your choice school and a backup school.
I'm sorry but there is nothing like a low or high rated institution. Who is doing the rating? undecided

When an accredited program is offered by an institution, it is a valid program. End of story.

You should fix this issue before you apply.

Good morning house and compliment of the season to us all. A quick question please. Can one get into the EE pool and end up getting a PR with a wrong date of birth on international passport without issues. Correct date of birth is 1983. This is the year of birth in all documents excluding international passport that has 1981 (travelled to the UK with same passport) getting to change the year of birth with Nigeria immigration proved abortive.

Would it be cool getting into the pool with this year of birth since all other document has a valid year of birth except the passport or would still have to get the year of birth changed. Thanks

Comprehensive or liability?

If your vehicle is not brand new/high-end, you might want to consider liability.

Also, you can try belairdirect, the personal, coorperators; i believe these companies have programs for new drivers. You can get their quotes online.

Good points. I have raised this issue a few times. These are viable options. Unfortunately, the Nigerian environment does not reward these skilled trades. In fact, there are no formal programs that validate or develop these skills in Nigeria. As a result, most people that immigrate from Nigeria under the skilled programs are university graduates. On the flip side, some of these grads end up in the trades if they are unable to make the required adjustments with their university degrees.

I woke up one day in October 2017, and saw this pop up that I was being suspended till Dec 31. I did not know what it meant until I tried to respond to a query. Reached out to Osewa and team and there was no response. And since I was not being paid for providing content on the blog, I told myself I would use those minutes for other productive matters.

Those who reached out to me, I still provided the help I could. And guess what….? I have met quite a number of people from NL in person. Met this Nigerian Guy at Acces, we exchanged numbers. It was just last week he said “I think we have communicated before, I sent you a Whatsapp Chat and you responded” I said I am not sure. He said he will look for the chat, and boooom na true o. Cool guy. Make we dey do good. If he was to assassinate me, na easy does it he would have taken me out.

Met Czar two or three times now. I even ate her Ogbono when I visited her in Mississauga. She has a creepy landlady.
For the Driving License, my guy is off that project. He doesn’t have direct hold on them again.
So what has been happening while I was away… I was going to resume to NL on Jan 1, after ban elapsed. I just told myself, this blog owner is unserious. I am not being paid for it, I am banning myself too.

Czaratwork can disturb! Choi… Since I don’t know why my handle was suspended, the next time they might ban me till 2025. So until I know their reason(s) I dey hiatus.

Yes o thanks to nairaland and contact exchange. Na you help me get my first job here. If driver's license matter no make us exchange numbers how i for get your number let alone get the job. My nigeria jollof rice dey wait you for my fridge.

Meanwhile i also got other peoples details when i was assisting them with conversion from ACCA to CPA and we still chat up until now. I hope this wont earn me a ban too.

we all know schools are ranked, and some schools have better faculties than others. what do you think makes UBC a harder school to land an admission? I didnt mean to look down on MUN, I was only using it to explain a point, heck i evn would have studied at MUN if i got my visa.. in QS world ranking and other rankings, MUN stands about 400 positions below U of A. not saying their degree is weaker or that it has any impact on career/job prospects. But students, and even lecturers take these things into consideration when settling for a school, especially wrt Research capabilities.

anyways, if you wish you can even say U.I or UNN is aii cos its programmes are accredited, or that harvard is just a school.. i dont understand how you didnt see that "low rate" in the context i used it, had to do with admission & acceptance rate..

Just saying.

Contact me or pm me is another way of asking for contact details, this individual did not volunteer to contact him, he requested for it several times. so its different from when somebody send you a pm without you asking for it.

Yes its based on contributions and content when those contributions are made openly here and not in private, how will you have content if its not available here or anywhere online?

Its not about people sending pm to each other, the issue here is about an individual who constantly asking people to pm him for an answer to a question asked openly here. If you can't give that answer in here then there is something fishy about your intention.

How will i ban people for sending pm? Has anybody here complained that i banned him/her for sending pm?

@justwise I think some things need to be looked at in perspective before applying stiff sanctions. I don't post much but I visit this page multiple times daily. Ballerz is the only NL member I have contacted off the forum and I can't even begin to say how much knowledge and information I have gained from him both on province decisions and our line of profession. One thing he is NOT is a fraudster or someone with criminal intent. He has never solicited anything from me rather he takes his time to respond to personal mails even at odd hours.

It is not his loss but NL members' loss if he leaves this forum with his wealth of knowledge. The guy has nothing to lose he is already in Canada working with his PR.

I hope I have not broken any IMPLIED rule with this post.

Justwise and Ballerz please sheath your swords. Ultimately, both your intentions are to help the public. As explained, some information are too private to be posted on a public forum, hence Ballerz request for PM. In this context, please apply the rule as the situation requires. Leaving this country for another land is not easy and people like Ballerz, Maternal, Salford & co. are making selfless efforts to help people. Nairaland and indeed, all members of this thread owe them a huge debt of gratitude. It's painful that rather than being celebrated, they are banned thereby preventing them from assisting folks who need it. This is rather counter productive and not only hurts the purpose of this forum but also demoralizes those who painfully take their time to help others.
Justwise, now that Ballerz has described his intention, please do the needful and make an exception in this thread.
Knowing nairaland, I'm sure anyone who has been scammed or deceived will come forward. Like Ballerz said, it's TEAM effort.

It is not his loss but NL members' loss if he leaves this forum with his wealth of knowledge. The guy has nothing to lose he is already in Canada working with his PR.

I hope I have not broken any IMPLIED rule with this post.

Don't put your money on that dude, Nairaland can do with anybody including myself, great minds and contributors i met here when i joined have all gone and nairaland still moving on, in as much as nairaland appreciates people who contributes and keep this forum moving but at the same time you can't hold the forum to ransom. There are a lot of good contributors in this thread and when Ballerz was banned the thread did not close down.

Hmmm....I hear you...but always have it at the back of your mind that this rule always applies perfectly until serious competition comes...nobody is indispensable but never rub it in their faces.

Bros e don do. You are a moderator. Please don't go pedestrian. You can't be attacking people like this. You have made your point and it's noted. Let's not derail the thread with this argument.
