I agree with just a couple.

Five NPFL stars who should have made the Nigeria CHAN squad

00:32

Kingsley Eduwo was a surprise omission from the final CHAN squad, despite scoring the winning goal in the decisive qualifying victory over Benin. The Lobi Stars attacker demonstrated his qualities in that fixture, as the Super Eagles overturned a first-leg deficit to win the tie 2-1, showing off his bravery and opportunism to meet Osas Okoro’s cross to secure Nigeria’s passage. Perhaps it’s true that Eduwo didn’t show his class in the pre-tournament training camp, but with the Eagles taking inexperienced forwards—largely—to Morocco, could he not have been handed a squad berth?

Sikiru Olatunbosun may well feel very harshly done by after his spot in the CHAN squad was taken by El Kanemi Warriors’ new attacking sensation Nura Mohammed. Olatunbosun’s omission could have been foreseen for a while, with the striker having been dropped from the WAFU Cup squad after struggling to make an impact against Benin. Nonetheless, the MFM FC attacker’s quality—particularly in wide areas—was evident last term, and he’s unfortunate not to have been handed the opportunity of a showcase CHAN outing.

Samson Gbadebo: Aniyikaye Olamilekan’s injury opened the door for another talented NPFL centre-back to make the squad, and while Ariwachukwu Emmanuel was the name on many people’s lips, why wasn’t Gbadebo considered for the squad? He’s still young, but already has extensive experience of representing the home-based Eagles, and could have been a major asset to Salisu Yusuf’s squad. His height in the backline would certainly take the pressure on Ikechukwu Ezenwa—not the tallest goalkeeper—while the Enyimba man can also be a threat at the other end.

Victor Mbaoma scored two goals in his first two matches for MFM FC after moving on an ill-fated loan move from Remo Stars, hitting the ground running at the team he thought would be his new club! After that start, it was easy to see why many were celebrating Mbaoma’s arrival as though the Lagos team had finally found an able replacement for Stephen Odey. Things turned sour at MFM, and Mbaoma is now able to find a new club…unfortunately, he won’t be able to use the CHAN as a shop window.

Tosin Omoyele must be questioning how he hasn’t managed to make the cut for the CHAN Eagles. Omoyele was in outstanding form for Osun United last term, netting 15 goals in the NNL, before securing a move to champions Plateau United. The attacker—who’s discussed his respect for United coach Kennedy Boboye—already impressed with goals against Sunshine Stars in the Aiteo Cup and the Super Six. He’s now looking forward to a maiden NPFL and Caf Champions League campaign, and it’s just a shame that we won’t see him in CHAN action as well.

CHAN Eagles shun Plateau United test game over injury fears

By admin -
January 5, 2018, 11:09 am

Officials have told SCORENigeria that the CHAN Eagles have rejected a proposed test game in Abuja against NPFL champions Plateau United because they do not wish to suffer any major injury problems with just days to their opening game against Rwanda.

Like the home-based Eagles, Plateau United are also training in Abuja, but efforts to get the two teams to play a test game have been rebuffed by the national team after they named a final squad for the CHAN in Morocco.

“We have selected our final squad and we do not want to take any chances as regards any of them getting injured before the tournament in Morocco,” a top team official told SCORENigeria

“We would rather continue to train on our own before we finally depart for Morocco.”

Both teams clashed in the recent NPFL Invitational Tournament in Kano.

NFF technical director Bitrus Bewarang, it was also learnt, is shopping for an international friendly for the team before their opening match against Rwanda on January 15.

But that may not work out as it is coming too close to the CHAN.

Rwanda, on the other hand, are scheduled to take on Sudan and Algeria as part of their build-up for the game against Nigeria in Tangeir.

Some important points we need to bookmark so we can forward to the appropriate authorities when the time demands.

''We will continue to modify as more suggestions resurface''

Icon4s:

Sebi I have said this before.

We need to have a standing U19/20/21 team. We engage them with friendlies each time we are on international break.
We don't need to wait to see some of these players play for the Super Eagles to see their readiness to play at that level.
We can even organize friendlies between our U20 team and less fancied senior teams like those of Benin or Togo.
They can even play against our CHAN team or NPFL champions. Or can take part in the Super6 just like in 2015.

Icon4s:

That is what they don't want to hear.

But if left to me there should be an age limit for players participating in CHAN.

If the major purpose is to unearth talented players who are not given the opportunity to shine because of the preponderance of foreign players in the national team, then preference should be given to the younger players. Is someone like Rabiu Ali still aspiring to make the Super Eagles Team?

This tourney, IMO, should be restricted to U21 players still playing in their local leagues. We still have a good number of players within this age bracket that have not had the opportunity to showcase themselves. Besides, scouts are typically after young talented players and not those who have passed their primes in the local leagues. Europeans also have an U21 Tourney different from the U19/20. Cant we also do same? But in this case solely for home based players. Besides this will give teams a good start in the scouting for U23 players. For Eg the next AAG is in 2019 and Olympics in 2020. Players who are U21 in 2018 would still be U23 in 2020.

I am still yet to buy into this CHAN idea.

tbaba1234:

Ejide started playing for the super eagles when he was in Gabros as a teenager.

Afeez Aremu just got a deal because scouts watched him play in the WAFU cup. Chikatara moved to north Africa on the back of a decent CHAN.

How about giving young potentials that opportunity? No foreign club will buy Rabiu Ali at 40 years. Or Ezenwa/Ajiboye/Afelokhai.. They are old and can't be taught new things.

International exposure at national/club level could also have played an important role in Ejide's move to north Africa.

If he did not get the opportunity at an early age, he might never have moved.

The CHAN tournament should be a discovery/exposure tournament. Get our young talents the needed exposure, that could be critical.

The caf xi is so biased. I wonder what criteria was used. Perhaps the league quotient was thrown to the bin.(e.g if Junior Ajayi made 10assist, and Moses Simon made 6, Junior would be preferred irrespective of the league he plays; Higher or lower). I'm still yet to see the reason why north africa dominated that xi.

One thing I don't want to hear is an age limit on CHAN. if a 32 year old Rabiu Ali is good enough to represent his country, stopping him amounts to discrimination.

We need more young people in our league. Instead of them playing for one of our local club sides they would rather spend the year going on trials with their academies. My challenge to them is to get in the league and prove themselves.

Nigerian Ahmed Musa’s future at Leicester under review

Omeruo (left) in training at Kasimpasa last season

by Graeme Jackson

Wednesday Jan 03, 2018. 09:00

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has indicated that Nigerian internationals Kenneth Omeruo and Ola Aina will not be recalled from their loan clubs in the January transfer window.

The Blues currently have no less than five players of Nigerian descent out on loan, with Omeruo and Aina (who are at Kasimpasa and Hull City respectively) joined by Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and Ike Ugbo.

Aside from Ugbo at Barnsley, the players have all enjoyed regular playing time at their loan clubs and Conte believes they are better left to develop their games rather than being recalled.

“I don’t think this could be realistic. The players we send on loan are playing,” said Conte in Tuesday's press conference, attended by Football.London.

“I don’t see a possibility for players to come back on loan. I remember last January with [Nathan] Ake, Kenedy and [Charly] Musonda coming back to improve our squad.”

Chelsea are set to face Arsenal in a heavyweight Premier League battle at the Emirates Stadium tonight.

Nigerian Ahmed Musa’s future at Leicester under review

Ahmed Musa

by Brian Lee

Monday Jan 01, 2018. 10:30

With the January transfer window opening the future of Nigerian Ahmed Musa at Leicester City is under review.

The 25-year-old joined Leicester in July 2016 for a then club record fee of £16m, but has played just once this season and as a result manager Claude Puel is questioning his worth at the English Premier League club.

“It's not the time to speak about if he can bring something to the squad or if he can leave the squad in January,” Puel told BBC Sport.

“We'll look at all the players. At the moment the status quo remains.

“He's a good player with quality. For me he's not a striker, he's a winger who can play on the left or right.

“He can attack space, has good penetration but there's imbalance in competition with (Marc) Albrighton, (Demarai) Gray and (Riyad) Mahrez.

“Sometimes it's tough, it's difficult for the staff to make a choice and give him more game time but in training sessions he always has a positive attitude and this is very important for him and the squad.”
