If it's getting fuller and thicker, that means it's growing but you're just not seeing it. I have a feeling it's cos of shrinkage. You'd be surprised at the length if you decided stretch it out
I started my natural hair journey a year ago, I have a thick and full hair though coarse but recently I do loose a lot of hair, I don't make my hair anymore only had my hairdo twice from start.. I do use naturals like onions, honey, egg, aloevera, name it..What do you think can stop my hair loss?.

I think the emboldened is the reason for your hair loss. Try doing more protective styles. It's all about balance, taking care and protecting
Wheeeew! This thread is Absolutely Amay-zing! I'm a 'hairthusiast',lol. My sisters nd me literally make our own products which are a combo of other products, plants(lmao, yes)nd other weird stuff. I take really good care of my hair nd all buuuuut...its too much for me.
I have all three types(b in front,c in the middle nd a at the back) ,its really long nd full(product of genes nd the all the products I've slathered on it)that sometimes its over the whole place and I can't get fresh air. I can literally feel my scalp sweating(if there's anything like that). I also try to not use direct heat on it so straightening isn't really an option. I dedicate a whole day to washing, combing nd styling that I literally have sore arms by the time I'm through. Do you have any idea of what I can do to tone down the bulk of my hair? I love my afro, but a girl's head gotta breath.

Oh my God. I completely forgot to answer you, I read it and thought I'd reply back when home but it totally skipped my mind, which I'm extremely sorry for.
Maybe try sectioning it into four sections while washing, deep conditioning etc. That way you'll be able to concentrate one one section at a time and it's way faster than everything being a wet mess

Oh! It happens. That's something,I'd try it next time. Thank you

I currently tried a wash and go using water, leave-in, curl enhancer and Eco stying gel. . . It came out well, my curls popped and all but I'm lost as to how to properly preserve the curls at night so I can rock em tomorrow and how long before I wash all the products off my hair?

If your hair is short, part into 3 sections and bond it like in the first picture
If your hair is long, do the pineapple method like in the second picture.
I have forgotten this thread oo. I saw your "small chop" pictures and found myself here. Your curls left me jealous sha.
Anyways, I'm still transitioning. 6 months in and I'm trying to build a solid regimen and listen to my hair. Around the time you did your big chop, I went to get braids oo. The thing no gree me so I opted for something that will you know free me. Crazy me, I actually chop a very very small part of hair to see what it will look like. I didn't want to be shocked after the big chop. And I think I have a 4a/3c hair, but predominantly 4a I went natural because I was fed up of perms even though it was kinda long and I wanted to explore my hair in it's natural state.
Nice and lovely thread. Encouraging women to embrace their natural texture. I can't wait to big chop when the time is right.

@Lovelygurl
Awww lol.
About the solid regime, I think you should be doing a lot of protective styles, since you're still transitioning.
My transitioning regime had been
Braids as a protective style. I took them off at 6-8 weeks because they got frizzy very fast (usually I leave them up to 3 months . I'm lazy like that lmao )
When I took them down, I'd always leave rhem for 4-6 weeks, deep condition, moisturise etc
I know people always say protective styles are the best for those who are transitioning. Yes they are but I felt my hair grew the longest and fastest when I took the braids down and deep conditionined every week.

My hair also respond well when I deep condition and do all that stuff which is why I rocked my transitioning hair for like 5 months before getting braids. And yes, this braids will stay for 10-12 weeks on my hair. I am lazy too

I hope it's not too late to join the group pleeease
Please I wear alot of wigs cause I rarely have time to style my hair. My hair's always in cornrows, please is there a particular regime I can adopt to aid hair growth and maintain length?
lovelygurl: So this thread is going to be all about natural hair aaaaand I'm so excited.
African natural hair is often seen as a pain in the ass. Something difficult to take care of which is the reason most ladies relax their hair because it's easy to maintain. Some don't even know of another option and the struggles go on and on and on. Thin edges, not being able to retain length, not having full hair, breakage etc. In order to make things better, you relax your hair again not knowing that is actually making things WORSE and the endless circulation continues.
Well the last few years blacks have been trying to embrace their heritage and embrace the black beauty and also finding away to maintain the African kinky hair!
By embracing your natural hair, believe me your hair is going to get fuller, longer, healthier and shiner. Motto: Yes black hair can freaking grow
This thread will be all about the natural hair. The different hair types, hair porosity, how to grow your hair faster etc and what relaxer does to the hair and why you should stop
Update: Every weekend
Oh and feel free to share what you use, what works for your hair and your diys. Also feel free to ask/a series questions. We are a natural hair community
Porosity: describes how the hair absorbs moisture. Your hair can be high / medium / lowin porosity.
Pre poo: necessary before shampooing. You do this by using an oil (which is chosen according to your hair porosity) to finger detangle and massage into your scalp. This helps minimising breakage and stripping of your scalp's natural oil. After detangling, wear a shower cap and let it sit for at least 15-30 mins for the oil to penetrate every strand.
Detangling: removing the tangles and knots of your hair. This is achieved by using your fingers or a WIDE tooth comb (if it's not wide, you are going to pull all your hair out). The best and easiest way to detangle is by serperating your hair into 4 sections and then carefully using your fingers to remove the knots
Shampooing: washing your hair with a shampoo. Make sure it's your scalp that you concentrate on because that's where the build ups are. It's your scalp that has to be clean. Dividing into four sections helps the hair not to tangle when washing. Once a week for low porosity hairandmedium porosity hair . Every second week for high porosity hair.
Clarifying shampoo: Only for those with low porosity hair. It's used once a month to clarify the scalp because low porosity hair is prone to more build ups.
Co washing: Washing with a conditioner instead of a shampoo. Beneficial for those with high porosity hair . Since people with hair porosity hair shampoo every 2nd week, you can co wash in between those weeks.
Note: Everybody's hair is different so 'listen' to your hair. If you find out that shamppoing your hair every 2nd week makes it feel dry then shampoo every 3rd week or once a month but co wash in between
Deep conditioning : Extremely important! Helps moisturise the hair, soften it and strengthen it. It's done after washing. Apply a conditioner (which is chosen according to your hair porosity) to every strand of your hair (you apply just as you would apply a relaxer). Wear a shower cap and let it sit for 30 mins before washing it away. If your hairis low in porosity , you have to deep condition with INDIRECT heat. After conditioner is applied, wear a shower cap, put a warm towel on it and wear another shower cap so the conditioner will be able to penetrate every hair stand (since the cuticles of low porosity hair are closed, it's very difficult for moisture to get in)
Proteins: Proteins in conditioners are very good for high porosity hair because they help lock in moisture. Medium porosity hair should avoid not using too much though. Too much moisture causes hair strands to weaken, which causes breakage. So it's best when you just use a conditioner that contains proteinonce a month Low porosity hair shouldavoidproteins because it makes their hair bristle or straw like
Sealants: are e.g Leave in conditioners, hair milk and oils. They seal in moisture and should be applied when the hair is DAMP (not soaking wet & not dry) and after washing your deep conditioner off
Moisture: = Water. So make sure the first ingredient of every hair product you buy is Aqua/H20/Water
LOC Method: Forhigh porosityandmedium porosity hair
L= Liquid (you can keep in a spray bottle and mix with a leave in conditioner/hair milk) C= Cream/Leave in conditioner/hair milk O= Oils (use oils according to your hair porosity )
Protective styles: help protect the hair from harsch weather and breakage, also helps grow the hair e.g braids, twists, bantu knots etc. A protective style should be removed after 4 weeks to 6 weeks so you can take care of your natural hair. If you don't build ups will occur which can lead to breakage
Big chop: Cutting all relaxed/heat damaged hair off
Transitioning: Phase of letting your natural hair grow out and gradually cutting the relaxed ends off
Trimming: Should be done if you notice your ends are getting thinner
