Hi Arielle,

I'm not exactly sure how buoyant the development sector is in Canada, but I can remember reading a piece about a concentration of most of the big ID organizations in Quebec (in other provinces, I only know of IDRC in Ottawa). You may ask your friend to conduct more of her own research into this.

Nonetheless, I'll try to give you a general overview of how the sector works to the best of my knowledge. A career in the international development (ID) sector, in most places in the world, has more to do with networking than anything else. I have worked in the oil and gas sector, and I must say that it is much more difficult to start a career in ID compared to other sectors I know quite well. This is partly because the organizations (save for the big ones like the UN, the world bank etc) are considerably small. So you may understand why networking is important here. The UK isn't such a bad place for your friend to start, as there are a lot of organizations as well as charities in the UK (Christian Aid, Save the Children etc) where she can gain some relevant work/volunteer experience. From my personal experience however, I wouldn't advice her to proceed if she hasn't started the program yet.

There are a couple of postgrad programs within the EU where you spend approx two years in about two to three universities across the EU (each of the four semesters is spent in a different country), and most of them also have the possibility of spending one of the semesters as an intern in international development organizations (not small charities). During this program, your friend will be able to build her network (if she's proactive), gain some experience, learn a 2nd or 3rd language (highly recommended) and might even be able to land a job in Canada prior to landing, with her network. This is because unlike other sectors, ID work experience is global (much of the work done all over the world is similar), save for the humanitarian/emergency arm, where you require experience in areas affected by natural disasters or war zones. By the time she's done with her masters program, she'll be in a better position to decide the next step in her career/academic pursuit. Moreover, networking is also important for a career in ID consultancy, as no one will hire a consultant they don't know/or that does not come highly recommended.

Arielle:
Hi all. Please what is the employment outlook in the non profit sector in canada? My friend is about to enter a masters program in development (I think something to do with sustainability and program management), in the UK. She plans to move to Canada after her program, do a PhD and work in the non profit sector and then start her own consultancy. Is anyone familiar with this sector?

Lol...welcome back! At least, you already took care of the important thing (dual nationality) such that you have a 2nd home if the 1st one does not meet your expectations!

Welcome home jare!
Feels good reading landing jists like this.

Pls your 1yr old's checked in lugagge...were they strict on it being (1)10kg?? Or they allowed 23kg since t can only be 1??

Ethiopian airlines allows 23kg for infants if the trip is to Canada/US.

Why not look for who will takeover your stuff, at a price of course and then look for where to rent in Ikeja? The real estate sector is so different in the 2 countries.

Amazing! Huge Congrats @freeradical. I keep imagining what you would have missed out of if you had gone with the full time job in the smaller company. Wow.
@mosquitoway - i agree with @Xx01. I doubt that an exchange is feasible.

i have read your comments before last year on this section. i think you are in d best position to give me some tips.
pls bro...i want to immigrate to canada,i plan to go for Express entry. i saw d registration requirements . i want to ask you, what amt is cool for the networth funds.
secondly, these immigration law firms like Campbell Cohen, are they paid for their services and when?

also i would like to know if it is possible for one to get a visa to canada while the application is still on for permanent residency . can i get to work without permit if i do so.
meanwhile i want to work and live in a province like Alberta.

i look forward to ur response.

Honestly a lot of question you're asking I don't have the answer too. You should check and ask your top questions in the skilled worker thread. I don't think you can apply for two different visa's at the same time. And unless you come in as a PR, you usually need a work permit.

Inception12:
A key reason that immigrants who live in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta enjoy higher levels of employment than immigrants residing in other parts of Canada is that these three provinces have consistently had the lowest unemployment rates in Canada over the past several years. Thus, many people who are looking for jobs in Canada find excellent employment opportunities in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, due to the ongoing shortage of skilled workers there. Additionally, these three Canadian provinces offer a high standard of living, yet tend to have a low cost of living which many Canadian residents find attractive. Therefore, if you want to live in Canada, you might want to consider moving to Manitoba, Saskatchewan or Alberta where there is a high demand for skilled foreign workers

To all the seniors in the group, how true is this statement. Just seen it on a canadavisa website during my research.

It's 100 percent true which I've been preaching on these boards. Unless you have to move to a different province because they specialize in the field you want to get into, move to a resource rich province like Sask and especially Alberta. While freeradical likes to preach God as it's the right thing to do, this is just the Alberta affect honestly. Cheap housing, opportunities, etc. Had he landed in a saturated place like Toronto, he may be second guessing his move to Canada. All about doing your research.

Senior if you understand where I am coming from and have worn my shoes you won't only be preaching but will be shouting out on rooftops.

See me wey them reject for Nigeria, roaming about without job for the past 20months, only to enter Canada and made management in the biggest brewing company in the world in less than 3months, and you say it's not God.

Forget that Alberta effect thing for once and see the peculiarity of my case. Am I the only immigrant that landed Alberta in the past 6months? I'm I the only one who attended job seminars? What are the odds of something like this happening? Heck, even the people where I work keep telling me they haven't witnessed such a thing. That I just broke a record! Who I sabi for Canada. You can only get a job in Canada of you are legally permissible to. You must have at least a work permit to be legally permissible to work in Canada. No employer will be willing to break the law just to hire you. So even if u are in talks with any employer willing to offer you a job let them know your status as they can be willing to help you process a LMIA backed work visa if they need you that badly.

Insomuch as I like to read your opinion on matters on this forum, I have come to see that you have a penchant for pointing out those who ascribe glory to God for their good fortunes. My guy, in everything, you must learn to give thanks to God first. Forget the Alberta effect because there are so many people there who haven't been this fortunate. There is a God factor in everything. Please know that all good and perfect gifts come from God.

Congrats @freeradical

You need to see me jumping here (as if I'm the one that got the manager promotion)...Im so tapping into this testimony for my future in Canada.

As I have always declared, I'm saying it again "My case is different", where others are declaring a casting down, I'm declaring a lifting up! You don't get it- It is written that it is ending in praises for me ni this 2018 (Pardon my talibanism/alutaism, cheesy cheesy this is what what this 2018 requires...claim and enter into the manifestation realm of your blessings by declaring and doing)

I had sensed it since that your initial post in December 2017 that God is unto something great for you.

Whatever you re doing that is calling the hosts of heavens to gather and be delivering off-shore blessings to you like this...don't stop ooo! (Read Psalm 2:8, that's the trajectory of your testimony ultimately, watch out for God's acts in your life!)

So happy for you and your family.

It shall continually end in praise IJN!

This is so refreshing to read after so many discouraging reports online!!

I've never even been to Cotonou before I took the leap of faith to come here.

I'm not saying that I'm special in any way to others but when I attribute my success to God I know what I'm saying. If I don't speak the truth and take God's glory for myself then I'm not worthy of any of his favours. That's why I'm encouraging others to believe.

Work as though it all depends on your work, and pray as though it all depends on God. We will all have and share our testimonies
The bold is the key. What I found is that we tend to pray and believe in miracle while forgetting that we also need to work.
I commend your hard work and also thank God for his grace on your life. Your relevant work experience, extra effort in preparation and God ordering your steps contributed to the success today.
Once again. Congratulations.

it would do well to warn first before suspension

He was banned for breaking rule number 22 on too many occasions. Its really annoying to see people asking for pm or contact me rather than asking questions openly here.

If you are unable to ask questions here so that others can learn then don't bother at all.
