Today, some group of young men and woman identified as Choba Youth Movement, a youth body existing in Choba community launched a protest against the management of Dufil Premier Company Ltd (Indomie Company) as they prevent workers from gaining entrance. Dufil Premier Company Ltd is company sited at Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Choba, along NTA road, Portharcourt.

The protest which started on Sunday night 07-01-18, has created a great concern to commuters as the Choba route was partially blocked by protesters as they agitate against the company’s management for refusal to attend to their requests.

Reacting to the purpose of the agitation, Mr. Chimele, the Public Relation Officer of the Choba Youth Movement, stated comprehensively that the protest was birthed as a result of the abnormalities and inappropriate romance between the management of Dufil Premier and the traditional leaders of the community, which has posed a serious treat to the indegeneous workers of the company.

Mr Chimele, alleged that the promotion of any indigenous staff/worker is decided by the traditional ruler. He sited that this act has affected a handful of overdue workers who has worked for over 7years as promotion is given only to the loyalists and boys of the traditional ruler.

The P.R.O of the Choba Youth Movement, disclosed to BrookInfo that the company has failed in their corporate social responsibility as the dividends of having the company in her community is not felt.

He also revealed that, the company has failed in carrying out community projects, empowerment of the populace, skill acquisition, schorlarships as Dufil Premier mostly leverage on the youths and community members for massive production.

They drew an issue of “Contracting Staff” were a group of loyalists of the traditional ruler will be employed as a substansive company staff, with the power of recruiting labourers. He said that this mode of employment has affected the community youths as all salaries are paid to the “Contracting Staff” which he in return will remit peanuts as salary after some amount of money has been slashed from the original amount released by the company.

He also stated that, the traditional ruler has refused democracy to reign in the community as the elected leadership of “Choba Youth Movement” has been denied recognition, as the election was against his will to appoint his loyalists into office.

According to Mr. Chimele, all they are demanding is the audience of the management of Dufil Premier, so they could have a consensus agreement to prevent the reoccurrence of a protest like this.

You don't know that place. Those Choba youths are very lazy. That's how they drove out Willbros, the greatest employer of labour in that community. Same with Horizon Fibres and other companies. They have closed off that company's gate several times, always making one demand or the other. If it is not for the company to employ non-qualified indigenes, it is to demand some rip-off payment as a "host community".

The companies should simply leave that area and let the youths there fend for themselves.

hope they come to a deal. attitudes like these will not allow development. even if oil companies want to move it will be difficult finding capable hands

That's how we continue to frustrate employers of labour in this country. By the time the company relocates, the youth will have themselves to blame. If the youth have issues with their community leader, why cant they channel it to him, why bringing a brand who is providing job opportunities for them? These youth better calm down

Hmmmm, The youths join the protest don't have any meaningful reason to protest. if the have any issue with their traditional leaders they should rather sort it out with them instead of disturbing a company providing source of income to the serious workers in the community.
