Upon all this things we read on paper everyday, Both local and foreign rice are still very costly with #100 difference. People will always prefer stone free foreign rice with extra #100 than Stoney rice. Reduce the price of local rice drastically and it will force importers to stop due to lack of buyers
I will like to say to you today that ogun state rice is not stoney as you claim but very delicious and awesome aroma. The stupid and expired foreign rice will definitely pave way for this locally produced rice soonest.

To some it good news but what we know is that rather than Thailand to Lagos, it goes Thailand to cotonou and then from cotonou it’s smuggled to Lagos.
That is why their export to Benin Republic rose as indicated in the article

Report filled with half truth. No wonder Trump could say those unprintable words about us.
Nigeria importation dropped since 2014, while rice importation to Benin rose sharply.

Those Nigerians importing to Nigeria, simply changed route and started importing through Benin and smuggling same into Nigeria without paying duty.
So who is losing at the end of the day?
Nigeria Government. Still qondeing why the rice is now a little bit cheaper. Smugglers are having a filled day and their business is thriving.

This is because there is no scarcity of premium parboiled shortex rice in the market. If in doubt , visit various rice markets within our border towns. Ogun state still has cheap rice and their locally produced rice (ofada) is out of the reach of the common man.

So where does that leave us? No where. We are simply not a honest country and we are not honest with our selves.

Was Donald Trump right about us?

I leave you to answer that. Good morning.

In summary, less rice entering Nigeria via the ports, but more rice entering via Cotonou. No progress there.

Liars. When you feed IDPs with confiscated rice after stealing a reasonable percentage and compelled the importers to pay for import duties at higher rates, what else do you expect.

Do the math.

No matter how you look at it there is still 200, 000 tonnes less import to either Nigeria or Benin Republic.

In addition, the government isn't supporting the dollar demand for such transactions meaning less pressure on our forex.

Face it, there's a vast improvement in the local production of rice.

This is another work that Jonathan's government started in 2014 and had targeted an earlier date for a far lower (next to nothing) percentage of rice importation.

BrandSpurNG:
Against the backdrop of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s policy of zero allocation of dollars for the importation of 41 items, including rice; import of rice from Thailand to Nigeria dropped from 1.23 million metric tonnes in 2014 to 23,192 metric tonnes as at November 2017.

According to data on the Thai Rice Exporters Association website, the value of these exports also dropped to 324 million Thai baht (from 8.2 billion Thai Bhat).

Thailand’s rice export to Nigeria (180 million people):

2014 — 1,239,810 metric tonnes2015 — 644,1312016 — 58,2602017 — 23,197

At this rate, by 2020 Nigeria will be exporting rice?

Thailand’s rice export to Benin (10.8 million people):

2015 — 805,7652016 — 1,427,0982017 — 1,647,387

Industry sources believe that the reduction in Nigeria’s importation trend was facilitated by the successful implementation of the Anchor Borrowers’ scheme of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), from which many states had benefited.

He said: “We have got to get used to discipline and direction in economic management. The days of business, as usual, are numbered. Two years ago, I appealed to people to go back to the land. “I am highly gratified that agriculture has picked up, contributing to the government’s effort to restructure the economy.“Rice imports will stop this year. Local rice, fresher and more nutritious variants would be on our dishes from now on.”

According to Buhari:

“Great nations are built by enterprising people who turn their hands to anything that circumstances dictate.”

To intensify local production, Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agriculture (NIRSAL) is deploying an innovative nation-wide field structure to support 225,000 farmers under the CBN Anchor Borrowers Scheme.

Curiously though, Nigeria’s neighbours, Republic of Benin, recorded an astronomical increase in rice imports from Thailand, from 805,765 metric tonnes in 2015 to 1,647,387 million metric tonnes as at November 2017 — leading to suspicion that the drop in Nigeria’s import may not have to do with the claim by the Federal Government that the country now produces enough rice for domestic consumption, but the zero dollar allocation that has placed the burden of sourcing foreign exchange for the importation of the affected 41 items on the importer.

Meanwhile, Thailand is expected to have some 9.5 million tons of rice for export this year, a senior government official said.

The 9.5 million tons of the Thai rice will bring some 4.7 billion U.S. dollars in export value throughout 2018, according to acting Foreign Trade Department director-general Adul Chotinisakorn.

That compared to last year’s 11.48 million tons of the Thai rice which secured 5.1 billion U.S. dollars in export value, the acting department chief said.

However, Thailand has remained the world’s largest exporter of Hom Mali (fragrant jasmine) quality rice, he said.

The forecast drop in the export volume of the Thai rice would apparently result from unfavorable weather conditions and the government’s policy to cut down the overall producing volume for fear of oversupply to the world market.

Here is the link of the Thai Rice Exporters Association where they posted that data: http://www.thairiceexporters.or.th/export%20by%20country%202017.html

Check out how their rice exports to Benin Republic are increasing with inverse proportion to the decrease in exports of rice from Thailand to Nigeria. Nothing has changed. We're simply importing Thai Rice through Cotonou.

Nigeria's increased production of rice is a good thing but the fact that Thai exports of rice to Benin has more than doubled in 2 years tells you all that is really going on is that rice meant for Nigeria is being routed to Benin.

no politics, just common sense.
Re: Thailand’s Rice Export To Nigeria Drops By 91% by somehow: 9:11am On Jan 15, 2018
What the government need to do now is ban anything rice coming from Cotonu. Promise all customs officers posted to the borders of Benin republic with mouth watering incentives by the amount of smuggled rice recovered.

lexy2014:
this is information to ponder

Issue is that the increase is as a result Nigerians changing the direction of where the rice come in from. Nigerians and cunny cunny.

It's in the blood. Build your own mba, chop the ones the few of your own are building Mba.

But always ready to chop what other countries are building!

Lazy thinkers!
