The only mind that clearly lacks maturity here is yours.if you had any iota of sense, you would know that for someone to make such an audacious move in public ,you must have known already the kind of person you are dealing with and the reaction that will follow.
Don't use 21st century as an excuse to coerce someone into an unwanted union.
