Silva messed himself up. He showed no commitment or basic modicum of decency when Everton came calling just 4 or 5 months after signing with Watford. How do you then expect players to pull together for the cause when their manager has zero commitment to the club? Silva is the first of a new breed of managers who behave like players that can start grumbling just 3 months after signing for a club because another club wants them. No matter how good you are as a manager, the ability to keep players motivated is the core function of your role, and Silva lost respect and player commitment once he behaved inappropriately like some hungry man at the first sign of interest in him. Not like it was even a big club showing interest sef!


Gone are the days when a managers commitment to a club is guaranteed for 1 or 2 years at least. I'm sure Silva's mentor Mourinho advised him to make such stüpid moves. Mourinho is one that starts asking club for new contract before his first year is up. He did it in his two spells at Chelsea, Madrid, Manure and Inter.

Silva's Watford form has plummeted after Everton publicly chased him, and though I'm not supporting his sacking, Watford have a good reason to sack him. Since that public courtship of Silva by Everton, Watford have lost 11 of their 16 matches leaving them just 5 points above relegation. So, Silva had it coming.

Silva's mistake was being ambivalent and enjoying the attention a bit too much. He was flattered. He didn't do enough to quell the reports and it backfired. You could say he brought it on himself. Why entertain enticement from your toaster if you eventually won't agree?

But you can't place all the blame on him. There had been friction between Silva and Watford's board concrning player transfers. They allowed Amrabat to leave in the summer (Silva made his opinion about this known) and it doesn't look like they'll sign anyone this January. Blaming Everton is the easy way out for them.

However, the quality is still there. Watford might have sacked him but he could probably be the only manager available who can help them fight that relegation battle successfully.
