When are Nigerian universities going to upgrade their BSc computer science outline? They are taking the fun away from Computer Science

You are not even allowed to learn INTERNET APPLICATION or COMPUTER ANIMATION at the Nigerian University.... Why wont they be half baked? while their mates outside the country are learning courses like game development, computational intelligence... smh

I weep! What does a Computer Science Student have to do with Peace and Conflict studies?! I told my friends yesterday, Nigeria and our Vision-less leaders have refused to Evolve! We are still stuck in 1960 while some countries like China and Japan are in 2050!

NIGERIANS, WAKE UP AND DEMAND PROGRESS!!!!

hummmmm, i told a friend that is a waste of time and resources to graduate with a degree in computer engineering in Nigeria due to lack of infrastructure that support it...not even knowing that the case of computer science is worst... the NUC is toothless

Germany offer more practical oriented course than UK in computing

That's y i laugh wen I see graduates and undergraduates dragging and arguing among themselves which school ranks first or last in NUC university ranking in Nigeria. Arguing that universities is better than polytechnics. They don't know all higher institutions in Nigeria are trash. I really pity those studying science related courses. Our degree certificate is utterly useless abroad. They don't just go to school they get educated. While we carry certificates.

I've always had the opinion that 1st year in 'ALL' Nigerian Universities is a waste! Its not just about Computer Science, its in all Science/Applied Science/Biological Sc/Engineering faculties! You end up doing Ordinary Level Physics, Maths, Chemistry for a full 2 semesters! Things that you did while at secondary school, and for what?

Engineering students get to 2nd year and start borrowing courses from all Engineering departments like confused students; you borrow 2 courses from Elect. Elect, borrow 3 from Chemical engnr, borrow from Mech, Civil, Met/Mat etc and still go back to borrow Maths, Comp. Sc and those annoying Mgt courses too.

By the time you get to 3rd yr, you are mentally exhausted! You start wondering what you have been doing in school for 3yrs yet you have not even scratched the surface of the course you enrolled for. Your colleagues in schools abroad at 3rd year have started designing pilot plants, doing field works and internship to be grounded in their fields; you are still looking for 'x' wey no be you throway.

Worst still, that syllabus has been like that for ages with no single review; i bet that was the syllabus our colonial masters left us with. NUC just comes to count how many lecturers you have, how many of them have Doctorate and publications before giving you accreditation. Thats All! Then they send their own children abroad and when they graduate, they go for their graduation, pose for pix and post on facebook with no single shame.

Why was I even born in this country?

It is incredulous how Nigerian students are forced to take courses outside their specific field. A relative demanded assistance with funds to get a psychology textbook. Psychology being a Gns course they were studying as "Electrical engineering students". What nonsense? It is akin to a tailor being made to study welding and foundry during his apprenticeship years.
Education in Nigeria quite a mess.

Personally, the Nigerian syllabus is more robust than that of the UK, there is more universality being presented in the Nigerian syllabus. The best Computer Scientist are excellent Mathematicians, the major problem remains lack of quality laboratories and lecturers, if the listed issue is solve, i would rather ask my kid to go study in a University where he would gain knowledge across board than a specific one.

It’s very unfortunate.

I finished my Law degree in 2 years. You spend 5 years doing a law degree in Nigeria - on top of the strikes, almost 6 - 7 years.

And the Employer will still expect you to be 25 years or younger post-call!! Who is doing Who?

Funny thing - Nigerian degrees are worthless outside Nigeria for the self-same reason. That’s why many folks from Nigeria can only get minimum pay jobs over here - even with a Masters degree!!!

I am so weeping for the Nigerian education system. Despite all the talent and Human Resources we have got! What a shame. What a shame. What a shame!

I disagree with you on that point Bro.

“You learn many things in practice than in classes”.

They waste less time on basics... cos they assume you will pick these things eventually. Best of all, you get to specialise quite early in your career.

This is opposed to the Jack of all trades - master kf none practised In Nigeria!

This is not true, UK university system is excellent compare to Nigeria. second only to the USA in the world...

In the Uk, all non focus subject like history, religious study, languages and craft work are learn in secondary school.you do about 12 subject in private and 10 subject in public secondary schooL before writing the GCSE.

when you further your study to university level,it is expected of you to be concentrated on your discipline, so you are trained for competency and not for liberal sake which is the case of Nigeria... knowledge is not power, ability make the difference....

100l for a civil engineer 1. general physics 2. general maths 3. French 4. philosophy 5. physical chemistry 6. general chemistry 7. practical physics 8. practical chemistry 9. biology 10. communication in English 11. use of library 12. N.P.C 13. social science
second semester is just to add part 2 to does courses exclude biology , N.p.c and social science, replace general physics with electromagnetism and wave & optics, replace general chemistry with organic chemistry add calculus and engineering maths add entrepreneurship which I did three times, logic and philosophy and the mighty computer engineering where we assembled a full pc but were not allowed to power it.
guess what in my finals the h.o.d was complaining that we are supposed to add River engineering , geodetic and plenty plenty courses I almost fought the man.

Painful truth, but TRUE! Very stupid Country I tell you ...
