Oga, no be only money be we problem o, plenty mismanagement and inefficiencies dey our side well well. Believe me, with what we have in our arsenal, we could have dealt BHT a decisive blow a long time ago if the "commanding officers" had the right b boldness, skills, knowledge and experience. By now, the only oyibo training we for require na for very advanced systems, no be dem go train us for COIN and basic soldiering. See as herdmen dey kill people up and down, abi oyibo suppose train us to handle that wan again, abi dem need buy 10 JF17 to neutralize the threat? As dem no wan do anything, wait and see how this threat will grow and spread. tdayof: |

SELF RELIANCE: NAF SIGNS MoU WITH NIGERIA MACHINE TOOLS OSHOGBO The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) yesterday, 24 January 2018, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Machine Tools (NMT), Oshogbo as part of the efforts of its current leadership to reinforce the culture of self-reliance. The signing of the MoU is also aimed at furthering NAF’s strategic partnerships with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) towards enhancing research and development. Accordingly, some of the areas of partnership identified in the MoU include training, machining, fabrication, casting as well as research and development. The MoU also covers the development and provision of Personal, Vehicular and Aircraft Protective Equipment. At the signing ceremony, which took place at the Headquarters NAF, Abuja, the Managing Director of NMT, Mr Nobert Chukwumah, expressed delight over the opportunity given to the Company to partner with the NAF. Mr Chukwuma explained that the signing of the MoU would further strengthen the existing cooperation between the NAF and the private sector, which NMT is a part of, with a view to leveraging on the capabilities of both parties for the benefit of the country and the citizenry. He added that the Company possesses the required capability and employs modern equipment in carrying out all its functions, all of which had earned the organization international recognition. Mr Chukwumah equally lauded the drive of the NAF for self reliance and indicated that NMT was happy to become part of the NAF’s increasing success story. In his response, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, reiterated the commitment of the Service to continually partner with MDAs so as to promote self-reliance in the NAF. According to him, the unrelenting efforts to reposition the Service into a more professional fighting force would be boosted by harnessing all locally available abilities and resources. The CAS further observed that there exists an abundance of talents and capabilities in Nigerian Universities and the private sector but the missing link has always been the seeming lack of willingness by government agencies to integrate those talents and capabilities. “The NAF was able to identify this challenge some years back and had consequently partnered many indigenous companies as well as signed MOUs with 15 Nigerian universities. These have resulted in huge gains for the Service, as it has enhanced the serviceability status of NAF platforms”, the CAS added. Air Marshal Abubakar further explained that some of the gains of partnership with the University of Maiduguri, for example, resulted in the reactivation of NAF Machine Workshops in Lagos and Markurdi, which had been abandoned for over 25 years. He added that the partnership had also led to the design and development of an Anti-Skid test bench for the Alpha Jet Aircraft, which is critical to the ongoing operations in the Northeast. Besides, similar partnerships with other local entities had resulted in the receipt of patent rights by the NAF for the production of hydraulic diaphragm for the Mi-35 helicopter gunship as well as for the production of Unmanned Ground Vehicles. Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief of Standards and Evaluation, Air Vice Marshal Kingsley Lar, announced that the idea of the MoU was initiated after a team of visiting NAF officers discovered the capabilities and immense potentials of NMT. He also noted that strategic partnerships with MDAs is one of the key drivers of the CAS Vision of repositioning the NAF into a highly professional force capable of adequately employing air power to meet Nigeria’s national security imperatives. It is worthy of note that similar partnerships by the NAF with academic institutions and private institutions in Nigeria have proved significant in the efforts at securing the nation. The CAS has therefore directed appropriate senior NAF officers to immediately initiate steps at taking full advantage of the newly signed MoU with NMT. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT: UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA SEEKS PARTNERSHIP WITH NAF The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has expressed its willingness to partner with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in the area of training as well as Research and Development (R & D) to support the Service in effectively carrying out its statutory role of defending the nation. The Vice Chancellor of UNN, Professor Benjamin Ozumba, stated this yesterday, 24 January 2018, when he paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, at Headquarters NAF, Abuja. The Vice Chancellor stated that the University decided to partner with the NAF because of its giant strides in R & D and the consistent display of professionalism in the discharge of its role. While commending the NAF for its efforts towards attaining self reliance, Professor Ozumba added that the NAF is one of the Government agencies that are obviously in tune with the changes in the 21st Century. According to him, the world has gone beyond the era of commodity driven economy to a knowledge-based economy. He added that the efforts of the current NAF leadership at improving the knowledge base of its personnel, through sustained R & D activities, were indeed commendable. The Vice Chancellor therefore reiterated the readiness and capability of the Institution to collaborate with the NAF in all aspects of R & D to ensure that the NAF continues to successfully accomplish its constitutional tasks. He further disclosed that the UNN had been consistently ranked Number 1 in the Google Scholarly Search in West Africa, for the past 3 years, a testimony of the University’s commitment to academic endeavours. The Vice Chancellor also announced the plans of UNN to establish a science park towards advancing technological knowledge. Additionally, Professor Ozumba seized the opportunity to invite the NAF to be part of the Institution’s Innovation Conference scheduled for February 2018. Responding, the CAS stated that the NAF would be willing to partner with UNN in the area of aircraft maintenance, building technology and other relevant fields. Air Marshal Abubakar further stated that the NAF had, over 5 years ago, identified the need to partner with academic institutions in Nigeria. Accordingly, the NAF had already signed Memoranda of Understanding with 15 other Nigerian universities and the partnerships had started yielding several benefits, especially in the enhancement of NAF’s aircraft maintenance capacity. The CAS, therefore, stated the readiness of the NAF to participate in the establishment of the science park at UNN. He also promised that the NAF would be adequately represented in the Institution’s upcoming Innovation Conference in February this year. The CAS has already directed that a team of appropriate NAF officers from the Air Force Research and Development Centre as well as from the Air Force Institute of Technology, both in Kaduna, be composed to visit UNN with a view to identifying specific areas of potential partnership between both organizations.
