Quoted from another forum by Abraham Gubler "Exercise Magersfontein in 1988 was a preamble for a amphibious landing at the port of Namibe. This was to be called Operation Kwevoel (Go Away Bird) for the SAN and 44 Para Bde to cut Cuban lines of communication by seizing the port of Namibe. SAS Tafleberg and five strike craft (for force protection and NGS) would land the SA Marines' Amphib Coy by D-80 (Delta) landing craft to seize a beachhead. No doubt with 4 Recce securing the beach beforehand. Then two companies of paras would come ashore from the Tafleberg via the Deltas and Puma helos. The SAAF with 10 C-130s and C-160s would then para drop another two companies of paras, engineers, the Ferret anti tank unit, 14.5mm HMGs for air defence and a 120mm mortar equipped light battery. Once the port was seized the engineers would destroy the facilities by demolition. However the truce was signed on August 8, 1988 and Operation Kwevoel was not needed." MikeCZA: 2 Likes |

Meanwhile, Dan Ali told state house correspondents that top on the agenda of the three hours meeting with Buhari was the stringent conditions imposed by the United States government for the sale of 12 Super Tucano A29 planes and other weapons to Nigeria at the rate of $495 million. He said US has insisted that payment must be made by February 20, 2018, and that the aircraft can only be available in 2020. Dan Ali also said that the US government had asked Nigeria not to send its personnel to understudy the production process of the aircraft as Nigeria did done in the case of other countries. “The contract include cost which is $494 million to acquire the Super Tucano A29 plans as well as training, where the facilities will be accommodated and continuous servicing among others,” he said. “Some of the stringent measures include that we will start having them from 2020, which is two years from now. They are also thinking of not allowing our technicians to be part of the production inspection. But this is what we normally do in all the defence contracts, we send our personnel to go and understudy especially when it comes to specialized aircrafts like in Russia, our personnel are permanently based in where the production is being done for this MI35 helicopters.” The minister said the council has approved that the officials of his ministry meet with the US ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, to iron out the contending issues. |

iblawi:i thought nemesis4u said we can get the su30 for around $35m. It all goes down to the specifications. Anyhow, there are other fighters. The SU27 IS there too. Nemesi4u, Biko help with some advantages of a su30 over a good packed su27. |

tdayof:WTF! It is now obvious that the A29 deal will be the worst deal Nigerian Airforce will ever engage in. We will have to wait till 2020 before we start taking delivery. WTH!!! Do they expect us to be fighting terrorists forever? They also don't want Nigerians to carry out maintenance on the aircraft by ourselves. How demeaning? They are acting all condescending on us. I say let's cancel this stupid deal! |

tdayof:This is utter absolute madness. If NAF goes for through with this deal with the US, it would be the worst decision taken by the Nigerian military in decades . I mean, for a crop duster with guns, that's ridiculous! It makes no sense, they basically want to "open office" on our heads. No benefits to be gotten going ahead with this. 1 Like |
