I think it's because the institution itself (marriage) is outdated that it doesn't really work out anymore.

Marriage is historically a patriarchial institution, and probably collapses when that framework is no longer there.

We have each developed our own skills and self sufficiency, so we can focus on love and companionship. It's no longer a necessity for survival and will be desirable only if (and for as long as) it improves the quality of the individual lives involved. It's a matter of perspective and expectations. A fifteen year long marriage that ends in divorce, shouldn't necessarily be seen as a massive failure if it was good while it lasted.
