POE experience (Washington Dulles)
Travelled via Turkish airline at 32wk,3 days ago.
Had my fit to fly from my doctor but was requested to do d FAAN medical certificate.
Inflight entertainment was ok and food was just there, no preferential treatment of any sort, had eight hours stop over at Istanbul.
When we were about boarding to Washington was asked if I am pregnant and the lady officer requested to see my return ticket.
Arrived at the airport 7:30pm US time
Had to rearrange myself bfor I joined the queue.Brought out all my paper works n cash.
While on the queue sighted a black CBP drilling a naija girl next thing dropped her passport inside the box with red cover.
Then palpitation began, was just praying not to be sent to him.
The lady directing then passes me to join a White CBP officer’s line,I quickly did but still continued my silent prayer with smile.
As God will have it, another black CBP entered his cubicle and shouted next!!! I hurriedly dragged my hand luggage and went to him.

Me:Good evening Officer
CBP:Good evening madam, why are you in the US.
ME:vacation and childbirth
CBP:Really,but u don’t look pregnant
ME:Smiled
CBP:Are you married
ME:Yes
CBP:What do you do for a living
ME:xxxx
CBP:what does your husband do
ME:xxxxx
CBP:Is he coming to join you
ME:Yes
CBP:Is this your first baby
ME:Yes
CBP:When was the last time you were in the US
ME:2016
CBP:Did u travel alone today
ME:Yes
CBP:Is this d address you will be staying
ME:Yes
CBP: Do you have food items with you
ME:Yes (mentioned them)
CBP:Now let’s talk about how you gonna pay your bill, because I know it’s expensive.
ME:Will be paying by cash
CBP:How much do you have with you
ME:xxxx$ n I av my debit card with me
CBP:would dat be enough
ME:My husband will bring more
CBP: Is the cash in your wallet
ME: Yes
CBP:Why did you bring it out, silently told me to keep it well
ME:Thought u might wanna count it
CBP: Don’t worry,I don’t need to
Stamps me til July, enjoy your vacation and safe delivery.

ME:Thank you.

It was Jst God grace, wishing all others mamas safe trip and successful POE

Please, Virginia mum’s, help with accommodation.

hello, There is nothing wrong declaring that you have more than 10k on you all that is required of you is to fill a form declaring the amount in your possession....You and your wife are seen as a family and will be giving only one landing card to fill so u will have to indicate that you have 14k on you, its really not a big deal!!

litylity55:
Happy Sunday to everyone. Pls house, can I and my wife take more than 10k dollars when traveling for her child birth. Or may be we can share it like I take 7k, and she also take 7k dollars. For us not to declare more than 10k dollars when traveling. Though the bill and exp is like 8k. But we just want to prepare our self down. And we don't know which Nigeria bank is working in USA so that we don't face difficulty in bills payment. Your advise will be appreciated. Thanks.

The choice is yours to or not to put the father's name on the BC.
If you choose not to it simply means you have full custody of the child.
But I wonder why your husband can't go to lag or Abuja (well just thinking out loud).

Happy sunday to you all

Please how do I apply for baby passport without notorised letter from my husband.

Is it possible to not write his name on the birth certificate or ssn?

How do single mothers apply for passport.

I don't see my husband going to abuja or lagos for this document so a second option will be appreciated.

It's not a good idea not to have the father of the child's name on the birth certificate.i won't advice that at all. He should pls try and make the sacrifice of going to Lag/Abj for his child's sake. Cheers

It's your choice but in my opinion if theres any way possible, your husband should try and go to the embassy to notarize the document and send to you instead if leaving his name out entirely. I'm in the same situation but my husband had to leave a very important job to travel to Abuja and notarize the document and has sent it.

input father unknown in the birth cert forms and any forms filled. With that you don't need a notarised form or letter.

However, ask your hubby if he's okay with it. Besides the US recognises the mum more in childbirth as it's your maiden name that is required in most forms.

I got the visa about 8 months prior to pregnancy: I believe that's abundantly clear it's after my renewal. Though I have no issues giving her all the documents as am using same doctor n hospital I used for my last child.

On minimum wage, it's a dicey one. I am going to LA n the minimum wage per hour is about $12-15. My intention was to pay double her basic salary: but even at that it is still way below the minimum rate. The monthly rate is about $3500. Pls did u pay anything in that range to your nanny? How did you go about it, that is, if u don't mind sharing?
Thanks
@ sugah, please I am interested in your response to this as I intend doing same too though not for childbirth. kindly share kiss. Thanks

Hmmmm. Hopefully I don't kobalize myself grin
So, unfortunately (or fortunately) at the time of her application I didn't read the excerpts from the link mamar*n posted so I was unaware of the US state prevalent minimum wage clause. Hence I didn't include it in our employment contract.

Before she went in for the interview, I told her if her passport was returned to her it means she wasn't given the visa. So when she came out of the embassy with her passport in hand she was crying profusely cos we both thought she was refused until I read the 221G form requesting her employment contract. I'm sure if I was aware of the clause and I told her she wasn't going with us anymore cos of that, she would have definitely chosen the experience over the money. She had only been with me for 6months and was still excited about being in Lagos for the first time so going to America was a big deal to her.

Another option you can explore, depending on the state you are going to, is to find elderly Naija women in the US that offer omugwo services. Some charge a thousand bucks a month. I did that the first time I traveled with my baby on training. It was cheaper for me but the stress of carrying my baby alone on the flight and airport wahala made me take my Nanny along on the next one.

Thanks for your response. Truth is I don’t think any VO would believe anyone who says $3500 or thereabout would be paid. Except you are a high ranking diplomat or ....

Will pray to be directed on how to go about it. $1k a lot of money but not bad at all.

Thanks

Why not go outside the airport and get a nice hotel for a cheaper price... Ibis (with breakfast) and premier inn has for about 70-90dollars tops and you can use a free shuttle. That 1 lounge gets full easily and that 90pounds is for only a few hours. I gathered this from online research. So keep an open mind.

I used the hotel the airline provided and it was top notch . Got free shuttle to and fro.

Pls again, which hospital are you using in Virginia, I will be Maryland by April. Most of the hospitals that are within my budget are very far from my host, like 3 hours drive. So am thinking if you could share your hospital details, hopefully it’s within by budget and proximity friendly. Thank you, sorry for bugging you pls

Its time to give back to a community i have learnt so much from. I got my visa september 2017. Here is the transcript. I was interviewed in lagos by an elderly woman
VO goodmorning

Me: goodmorning ma'am

VO fine can i have your passport

Me: sure

VO what you going to do in the US
Me: to give birth

VO have you contacted a doctor and a hospital

Me: Yes(expatiated further on the name of the doctor and hospital and attempted to bring out the correspondence and letters but she said i shouldnt bother.

VO how did you get to know about the doctor

Me: got to know about her through a friend that had used her earlier
VO which state are you going to

Me: Georgia
VO: how long do you intend to spend
Me: 12weeks
VO: where will you stay
Me: intown suites(gave her the address)

VO: how much is your budget
Me: About 15k dollars( tried pulling out my documents but she said i shouldnt bring out any of the documents

VO: How long have you been working at your place of work
Me: Over 2yrs
VO: what does your husband do
Me: bleep
VO: will he accompany you
Me: No because hes a very busy person and cant afford to be away frm work for that long

VO: You have a son already, who will be taking care of him while you are away
Me: My mum
VO: i will grant your visa
She gave me the white paper and i said thank you.

At the airport, fit to fly from port health was requested for despite having one from my doctor. Flew virgin atlantic at 35weeks 5days in november( better to fly them earlier because they almost did not fly me under the pretence that they dont fly pregnant women beyond 32weeks as opposed to what is on their website). Anyways, God showed up for me.
Fast forward to POE
POE was atlanta. The queue was extremely long, after standing for like 1hr 30mins i was directed to use the self service machine. Got my print out and joined another queue. Got to my turn eventually.
CBP: hello
Me: hi good day
Cbp: why are you here
Me: to have my baby and spend my maternity leave
Cbp: how long will you be spending here
Me:9weeks(note i said 12weeks at my interview but couldnt make it early as i planned due to work)
Cbp: where will you stay
Me: gave him the address of the intown suite
Cbp: lemme have the hospital correspondence(handed it over to him
Cbp: how much do you have on you
Me: 4kdollars , ive paid my hospital fees and i have about 6kdollars on my cards
Cbp: can i see the receipt of payment you made to the hospital
Looked at it for a minute and went to meet another officer who told him to go give another officer.
Cbp 2: hello
Me: hi good day
Cbp 2: why are you in the US
Me: for childbirth
Cbp: how much do you have with you(gave him same response as above)
Cbp: any food stuff
Me:yes
My documents were kept in a folder and given to a lady who told me my bags will be retrieved so as to be searched.
Got to agric and they asked same questions as above and checked the documents i submitted earlier while i waited for my bags to be brought..
Waited for like 20mins and didnt see my bags, had to go bring it from baggage claim myself.
The officer in agric just said i should go with my bags, it wasnt opened. Carried rice, beans, egusi, yam flour, knor cubes, dried fish, dry pepper, peak milk, milo all packed in ziploc bags and labelled.

Planned and paid for a vaginal delievery though i ended up with a csection.Had my 9pounds 6ounce baby 5weeks after at 41weeks via emergency Ceaserian section at northside hospital . Came in for induction which was almost successful until i got dilated to 9.5cm for over 2hrs. Baby didnt descend enough to be pushed out hence i was sectioned.

Hospital bill $6875

Paid extra $685 for baby

Anesthesia: $3063

Paed $850

Doctor $1900

Infant ticket on VA $436( i almost fainted when i was told, guess its cos its peak period)

Filled the birth cert form 2days after delivery.
Birth cert was gotten 1week after( 3copies for $35

American passport $165(was gotten same day i got BC
Naija passport $235 (they had only 64pages, expedited it and got it after 1week)
SSN was gotten 12days after by mail.

Missionary journey ended successfully. We give God all the glory
A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to this forum.
Sorry about the typos(time constraints)
