Nigeria: Eagles' Okpotu Urges Team Mates to Stay Focused
By David Ngobua

Home-based Super Eagles striker, Anthony Okpotu, has urged his team mates currently vying for honours in the 2018 Africa Nations Championship, CHAN, in Morocco to stay focused on the task at hand.
On Sunday, the Eagles returned from the brink of defeat to win their quarter-final clash 2-1 against Angola.
After missing a glorious scoring opportunity in the first 20 seconds of the highly explosive encounter, Okpotu scored Nigeria's equaliser in the 92nd minute to take the match to extra-time.
Akwa United Gabriel Okechuwkwu then scored the match winner in the second half of added time to hand the Super Eagles their second CHAN semi-final ticket.
In a telephone chat with Daily Trust yesterday, Okpotu said he felt relieved when he scored the vital goal to save the team from elimination.
He said even as he was not happy that he did not take the chance that fell to him, he remained optimistic because he knew he would make amends.

Okpotu also said even the best strikers in the world miss goals so he did not see anything so different about his mistake.
"It was a difficult moment for me as a striker because I should have scored that goal.
"I know what was running through the minds of Nigerians when the semi-final ticket was slipping away from us. But I was focused. I knew we were going to make it.

"I am happy that I scored to make amends. I thank my team mates for believing that we could still do it," said the Lobi Stars danger man.
Okpotu told his colleagues that they may be criticised but it shouldn't dampen their spirits.
"We have two more matches to play so I am urging my team mates to stay calm and focused. We have to concentrate so as to win our next match and if possible, the trophy," he advised.

dont be surprised guys if this guy makes it to Russia , i am having the feeling, he has some unique style and so far in this competition he has nt done badly .... has the power and his hold up play is good ... also have a way of coming to the midfield to contribute to the team , i know he has missed some begging chances and one on one ... but he can get better , what if he his been drill and he develop so fast into the kind of beast we will need ? i think stage fright has contributed to his ability , but he keeps improving ... pay attention to him , he is Strong and dangerous . just my opinion

There were reports that Oliseh has been sacked but he has denied it.

Either ways, it looks like he will be let go at the end of the season.

His man management issues at play again.

I don't know how many Kane missed in the Euro, you can help us with the stats, morata is not the leagues HGS so I don't see the comparison here.

How many did Morata miss against Arsenal? How many did Harry Kane score at the last Euro's? These things happen and if me acknowledging that means I am making excuses then so be it.

say he possess the attribute of a midfielder and not a striker....
a striker always missing sitters...one on one chances....is that one a striker...?

i don't think the super eagles will be going to Russia to go make up the numbers but go make a difference....even the likes of ideye wit all their experience and proof in the national team colors still not sure of heading to Russia....

okputu messed himself up...he had the opportunity to gate crash rohr team..had it been he has been more clinical in front of goal he would have been up wit like 7 goals by now and that is something even rohr can't resist or deny invitation

I learnt the CHAN Eagles asked the govt to hold onto their allowances until they lift the trouphy shocked

This is a good gesture to me and in the words of the media officer of the Eagles, "I have never worked with this crop of players in my life!"

Sudan vs Nigeria

I hope Salisu Yusuf has fixed the wasteful Eagles. I didn't expect it to take him this long to find a solution to his misfiring squad.

He needs to borrow a leaf from Rohr. The german tactician in a very short time into his appointment employed shooting drills in training to correct and bring desired change in the A team.

We saw the improvement in players like Mikel, S. Moses, Iwobi, etc in subsequent matches after the Tazania match where we created as many as 23 chances but could only convert 1.

This shooting accuracy has seen the team become more clinical in front of goal going on to score 4goals out of a total of 5shots on target against Argentinal-this kind of improvement makes one happy and at the same time left one wandering on Salisu's inability to translate such thing into the CHAN team having spend more time with the local boys...

Well, tomorow isn't far away. The team needs to take their chances and bury the game as early as possible.

Wishing the boys a successful passage to the final.

In the national team there is usually not enough time to drill players like you would have at club levels.

A player can only give what he has.

Please, can we stop these silly 'what if' arguments? What if Mikel had gone to United instead of Chelsea? What if Iheanacho had gone to Porto instead of Man City? Man City ruined him blah blah blah....

People of God, do you know how many Nigerians have gone to Porto? What has become of them? The likes of Chidera Ezeh, have they become world class or anywhere close to Kelechi? Have they even nailed regular spots anywhere?

Let us stop all these useless arguments on what could have been but never was, and yes, goldfish80 this message is for you and all the other "he could have been" people

Me sef, I should have attended Unilag and should have been a graduate by now, but see where I dey.

There are no guarantees that another path could have been better, every single one of us on this thread must have made choices that perhaps did not go well, but does that mean the other option could have been better? No.

So, please, let us be factual, talk about the here and now, by the way, mocking any of these players makes you look like a petty hater, even if it is just to rile anyone up. Everyone has their own shortcomings in life, just because yours is not on display for us to drag you with does not mean it doesn't exist

Remember that, whenever you feel like being petty

Croatia Coach, Dalic: Match Vs ‘Young, Potent And Hungry’ Nigerian Team Will Decide Our W/Cup Fate

Croatia head coach, Zlatko Dalic, has described the Super Eagles of Nigeria as a ‘young, potent and hungry’ side with great potentials, admitting that the result of his team’s first match at Russia 2018 World Cup against the three-time African champions will decide their fate in the tournament .

Croatia will open their 2018 FIFA World Cup Group D campaign against Nigeria on June 16, in Kaliningrad.
This is the first time both countries will clash at the senior level.

Speaking to FIFA.com , Dalic, while assessing Croatia’s Group D opponents, which also includes Argentina and newcomers, Iceland, stated that their opening game against Nigeria will decide how far they will go in Russia.

“Iceland were the best team in our group. We know them very well and had a tough loss against them in Reykjavik.,” Dalic began.

“Argentina are obviously one of the favourites to win the World Cup, while I see Nigeria as a young, potent and hungry team with great potential. That first match against Nigeria is very important – it will set the tone for the rest of our tournament.”

Dalic described Real Madrid star midfielder Luka Modric as the lifewire of the Croatian team, but however stated that the main strength is in their unity.

“For Croatia, he (Modric) is our best player – he’s the engine that makes us go. He’s also a captain who leads by example. He always gives his maximum, he sets high standards with his attitude, aggression and energy on the pitch, and with his behaviour off it.

“We have good players in big European clubs, so obviously we have great individual quality in the likes of Modric, Mandzukic, Rakitic, [Ivan] Perisic, Kalinic and others. But our main strength has to be the team.

“I believe that pride and patriotism show by our players when playing for Croatia is a very important attribute. That’s something we need to combine with our quality; if we do that, we’ll have a good chance of reaching our goals.”

And on his plans ahead of the World Cup, he said: “I plan to travel and meet with players and their club coaches, to talk about their status and form. I am focused on only choosing fully fit players, and they know that.

“We also have two great friendly matches in March against Peru and Mexico in USA, and I hope to have two more strong opponents in June. We want to see how good we are and what we need to improve on before the World Cup, and to play teams with similar styles to those we’re going to face in Russia.”

Guess Who Wants To Gate Crash Nigeria Team To Russia?

Sammy Ameobi has not given up hope of gate-crashing Nigeria’s World Cup squad.
The Bolton Wanderers winger pledged allegiance to the Super Eagles in 2014 despite previously representing England at Under-21s level.
Ameobi has been in good form since returning from a knee injury sustained in pre-season and has three goals from his 19 starts in the Championship.
Having previously played for Nigeria’s Under-20s in two friendlies in 2011, the 25-year-old would love to make the step up to senior level, emulating his brother Shola, who played at the 2014 World Cup.
Ameobi hopes with regular football he is now getting at the Macron Stadium he may yet impress the international selectors and make his World Cup dream a reality.
I want to solely represent Nigeria ,” he said. “Hopefully that opportunity will come but it will only possibly happen if I play well on a weekly basis, which is what I am aiming to do here at Bolton Wanderers.
“With it being a World Cup year who knows what could happen?
“It would be great to be a part of that, but there’s a lot of hard work ahead for me if that’s even possible.
“It isn’t easy breaking into the international team. Shola did it and I can only hope to follow in his footsteps!”

Croatia Coach Dalic Wary Of “Fast And Powerful” Super Eagles, Admires Mikel

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic has described the Super Eagles of Nigeria as powerful opponents and also insists that his team must get a win against the three-time African champions to harbour any hope of progressing beyond the group stage at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Croats will face the Super Eagles in their first Group D game at the Mundial at the Kaliningrad Stadium on June 16.
Two-time world champions Argentina and Iceland, who will be making their debut at the finals, are the other teams in the group.

Dalic also picked former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel as Nigeria’s most influential player.

“Nigeria’s is not a typical African team, they have Mikel as captain with young, fast and powerful players,” Dalic who was a defensive midfielder during his playing days stated in an interview with Sporske. jutarnji.hr .

“They are always lively and it will not be easy to play against them. If we are to go through to the next round, then we have to beat them.”

I understand you...but i think wit only two session practise on shooting drills will tell a lot on their play...

all they need no is to put their shoots on the ground and not on the air...

that alone will help in their subsequent matches....
many a time this coaches are clueless on what to bring out in this players not really because the players are that bad...
they have been no player that have never been worked on by their coaches...

I blame yusuf a little but more blame should go to the club coaches....
