The Nigerian Music industry has started off on a good note. Many critics and music lovers have opined that the year is going to be a major one for the industry in terms of revenue, international acceptance and discovery of emerging talents. January 2018 brought some memorable happenings in the industry and we will take a look at some of the major happenings in the industry during the course of January.

The SoundCity MVP Awards
The Sound city MVP Awards was held on the 12th of January 2018 in Lagos. The Soundcity MVP award was a major event in the Nigerian entertainment circle for the month of January and the event recognized artistes like Davido who won the artiste of the year and song of the year, Maleek Berry winning the Best New Act and Sarkodie and Runtown carting home the award for best collaboration courtesy of the hit Single – Pain Killer. The prestigious awards was however not without it’s controversies, from Diamond Platinumz supposedly undeserved award of Best Male MVP, To CDQ dissing MI Abaga’s Call for rejuvenation of hip hop during his performance at the event and then the tweet fight and diss between Kiddominant and Young John over the producer of the year Award. Kiddominant has since apologized to the organizers of the award.

Burna Boy
Damini Ogunu popularly known as Burna Boy dropped his third studio album titled Outside on the 26th of January 2018. The album which was preceded with hit singles like GBA, Rock your body, Deja Vu, Konibaje and Heaven’s Gate ft Lily Allen was released under Atlantic Records. Boasting of productions from Leriq, Puffytee, Chopstickz and P2J, the 13 track project with contributions from JHus and Lily Allen and standout tracks like Giddem, the Fela inspired Afrobeat anthem Ye, Outside, City vibrations and one of the tracks submitted for the Drake More Life Playlist, combines and masterfully blends different genres of music like reggae, afrobeats, trap, hip hop and rock. It can be said that Burna Boy has dropped a major contender for the album of the year award through this album. Worthy of note is the fact that the police case with fellow artist, Mr 2kay also appeared to have been settled amicably as the issue led to the cancelation of his concert in December 2017.

Shaku Shaku Dance
After the shaku shaku dance came into limelight with the smash hit track titled “Legbegbe ” by DReal featuring Idowest, Obadice and Kelvin Chukz, the dance became a viral sensation, causing frenzy at parties and social events and the dance style was the inspiration behind most singles released in late December 2017 and January this year as artistes tailored their songs to accommodate the shaku shaku dance. From Olamide Wo’s to Dammy krane Shaku shaku, Dbanj’s Issa Banger and Reminisce Lalakukulala, The shaku shaku dance is currently the hottest dancestep in the country. With endorsements from top acts like Wizkid, Wande Coal and hundreds of viral videos of dancers showing their shaku shaku skills, it can be said that shaku shaku is here to stay.

Olamide’s Science Student
Olamide’s Science Student is one of the biggest singles of 2018 already. The song which has generated controversy for promoting and encouraging drug abuse among youths has gathered massive downloads. The Bbanks and Young John produced tune is already on its way to be one of the biggest songs of the year despite the ban by NBC. The song which centers on drug users and alcohol addicts is laced on a shaku shaku inspired beat as Olamide playfullys hails the people as science students in the song.. The song has received massive love and acceptance from fans.

Kiss Daniel and G-Worldwide
While entirely not a fresh issue, the Issue which started late last year has been a subject of discussion in the Nigerian music industry ever since then. Kiss Daniel left the label amidst claims of breach of contract by G-Worldwide Entertainment. The artist who has gone ahead to float his new record label “FLY BOI” Entertainment released the new Single “No Do” via the label. With accusations and counter accusations by both parties, we look forward to what becomes of the legal tussle and the new course that will be charted by the star act especially as the expiration of the deal will now enable kiss Daniel to feature other artists. His recent efforts “YEBA and “NO DO” are getting massive rotations across the country.

No.3 ekpetu street

P. O. Box 172,

Ijora, Lagos,
Nigeria.

9th May, 2017.

Dear Sir,

APPLICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT
I refer to the recent death of the Accountant at
your office and hereby apply for the job as a
replacement of the dead Accountant.
Each time I apply for employment, I get a reply
that there is no vacancy but in this case, I have
caught you red handed and you have no excuse
because while I was in my hometown for holidays
I heard the good news about his death so I
quickly rushed back to attend the funeral to be
sure that he was truly dead before applying.
Attached to my letter is a copy of my CV and his
obituary photograph as proof of vacancy.
You can't lie to me this time. GIVE ME THE JOB!
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,

Owoeye Micheal Ojo
