Salisu Yusuf’s calm aura underpins Nigeria success



There are heroes emerging throughout the Super Eagles’ CHAN campaign, but coach Yusuf deserves the lion’s share of
the credit.

It seems as though, at every stage of their African Nations Championship campaign, heroes are emerging for Nigeria.

Most encouragingly for the Super Eagles, as one fades, another arises to take their place, such is the strength in depth that the West Africans boast at the ongoing CHAN in Morocco.
Take, for example, Sunday Faleye.

A new addition before the tournament, the youngster stepped into the breach as those around him struggled for composure and coherency early in the campaign, and struck the decisive winner in the 1-0 victory over Libya.

Elsewhere, Dayo Ojo has emerged as a player who ensures completeness for the Super Eagles, linking midfield to attack, giving Nigeria dynamism and bite in midfield, while simultaneously creating scoring opportunities for those around him.

While Daniel Itodo was sidelined with injury, the youngster Ikouwem Utin stepped up, delivering a performance that belied his slender years and offered hope for the future of Nigeria’s left-back berth.

In attack, with Anthony Okpotu spluttering as a lone forward, Gabriel Okechukwu has begun to deliver, weighing in with contributions that emulated his decisive showing for Akwa United in the Aiteo Cup final.

It was Okechukwu who scored the extra-time winner against Angola in the quarter-final, and the number 22 who also bagged the only goal of the game as Sudan were put to the sword in the semi.
He will start the final, likely alongside Okpotu again, and don’t bet against Okechukwu being the star performer once again as Nigeria attempt to win a maiden CHAN title.

Even in the semi-final showing against Sudan, the Eagles had to summon up a new hero following the early injury to captain Ikechukwu Ezenwa.




The goalkeeper had, of course, been awarded the Man of the Match prize in the quarter-final against Angola—keeping Nigeria in the game with a series of fine stops—and had the character to hold his own in the high-profile semi against Sudan.

Could Sudan have coped as well without Akram or Libya without Mohamed Nashnush as Nigeria did without Ezenwa?
Indeed, his replacement—Dele Ajiboye—delivered one of the performances of the tournament as he kept the Falcons of Jediane at bay time and time again after coming off the bench.

One particular double stop late on was exceptional, and the keeper earned significant praise from Zdravko Logarusic after the contest.


“[Ajiboye] started well and, for me, he is the Man of The Match,” Logarusic told journalists, as per Complete Sports Nigeria. “He is the one who gave Nigeria the final slot.
“When they needed help at the back, he was the man who saved them.”

Ezenwa may have fallen by the wayside, with his final in doubt, but in Ajiboye, Nigeria have a new hero.

However, beyond all of these aforementioned players, there’s one character within the Eagles camp who deserves immense credit for establishing the scenario where Nigeria appear to be able to cope with whatever is thrown at them.

That man, of course, is coach Salisu Yusuf.

The former Kano Pillars and Enyimba technical advisor knows Nigerian football as well as anyone, and has impressed with his man management and his utilisation of resources in Morocco.
He received specific praise from Ezenwa after the victory over Angola, with the goalkeeper praising the calmness with which Yusuf approaches adversity.

The stopper described how the coach’s composed presence on the touchline convinced him that, regardless of the fact that the Lusophone heavyweights had taken the lead as Nigeria laboured to find a winner, the Eagles would come out on top.





Yusuf himself, overseeing the CHAN campaign despite an almost crippling hip problem that leaves him with a noticeable limp, has never appeared ruffled—either after the 0-0 stalemate with Rwanda as his strikers failed to ignite—or as Nigeria trailed against Angola.
There is a humility, a patience and an aura about Yusuf, and while he couldn’t resist a toothy grin after the Eagles downed Sudan, you can bet he won’t be getting carried away against Morocco.

While Okpotu may have drawn a blank against the Falcons, Yusuf has kept faith in his misfiring frontman—who has two goals in five games so far this tournament—insisting that he has faith that the Lobi Stars man will come good.

He rewarded his manager’s faith against Equatorial Guinea and, unforgettably, with the late equaliser against Sudan as, one again, Yusuf’s calm confidence that things will come good ultimately bore fruit.

This is a manager who has faith in his methods and in a logical approach to the game; if you do the right things consistently enough, success will follow.

“For the game against Morocco, every team is beatable,” he told journalists after the Sudan triumph. “If we do the right things, why not?
“We can beat Morocco.”

At this stage, even with heroes falling by the wayside, you wouldn’t bet against them.

Nigeria v Sudan: Fans happy with CHAN Super Eagles’ performance

Nigeria v Sudan: Football fans in Enugu say they are proud of the home-based Super Eagles’ performance at the ongoing 2018 African Nation Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.

The Eagles on Wednesday night booked their place at the final of the tournament after beating Sudan 1-0 to face hosts Morocco in the final.

The 2018 African Nations Championship, known as the Total African Nations Championship (also referred to as CHAN 2018) will be the 5th edition of the biennial football competition.

It is organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and exclusively featuring players from the respective national championships.

Nigeria ranked 51 in the world in the FIFA/Coca Cola is making its third appearance after finishing in the third place in 2014.

Some of the enthusiasts who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Thursday said the players had surpassed their predecessors’ achievement of third place finish.

A former Nigerian World Boxer, Ikechukwu Okoronkwo, said that the current players had surpassed everybody’s expectation.

“At the very beginning, I never thought that they will reach this level when they draw their first match against Rwanda.
“When I watched their first and second matches and saw how the players missed goal scoring chances, I did not expect them to go beyond the quarter-finals.
“I am happy that those lost scoring chances did not come back to hurt them and as a true Nigerian, the trophy will be a better compensation for the country,’’ he said.


Rangers Media Officer Norbert Okolie said that the players had proved that they were there for business.

“We have not touched this trophy since its inception and for Nigeria to reach the final in Morocco, it is a huge success,’’ he said.
He called on the players to give it one more push as they have 90 minutes separating them and the trophy.
Contributing, Enugu State Boxing Coach Blaise Ude prayed that the team would be successful in the final.

“It surprised me to see the players survive the remaining minutes of the game against Sudan after been reduced to 10 men with Ifeanyi ifeanyi sent off in the 59th minute.

“In fact, everything worked in our favour on Wednesday night against Sudan as Dele Ajiboye the second goalkeeper came in for the injured Ikechukwu Ezenwa and made several saves,’’ he said.


Austin Ezenwata, who runs a football show in Abakpa Nike, Enugu, said that Nigeria deserved to be in final and hoped that they lifted the trophy.
“All the players were not exposed to international football and besides, they have no room in the squad used by the Nigerian coach to prosecute the 2018 World Cup qualifier,’’ Ezenwa said.

He advised the players to go for the trophy against Morocco and to ensure they scored an early goal in the match to ease pressure of the home crowd. (NAN)

Nigerian youth coaches set for NPFL/LaLiga Coaching Clinic



As a follow-up to the success recorded during its first edition, and to reiterate commitments to the development of grassroots football in Nigeria, the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) and LaLiga have announced the second edition of their annual coaching clinic. The five-day clinic which is expected to have over 100 youth coaches in attendance will take place at the National Stadium, Abuja from the 7th - 11th of February, 2018.

The annual coaching clinic which will precede the NPFL U-15 Promises Tournament is designed to train youth coaches on how to properly develop young talents using the LaLiga methodology. The content of the clinic will be framed within a level 2 (intermediate) syllabus where coaches will learn more complex and technical aspects of LaLiga’s methodology as a continuation of the level 1 (beginner) training from the first edition.



LaLiga Sports Project Coordinator, Juan Zapata spoke about LaLiga projects in Nigeria and said “We are once again thrilled to have the opportunity to spread the LaLiga methodology across Nigeria and Africa. We are committed to each of our projects across Africa and sending LaLiga coaching instructors to train the youth coaches in Nigeria aims to further show our commitment to the development of football in the country through our longstanding partnership with the NPFL”.

“Last year, we had clinics for players and coaches in Kenya and we also have something coming up in South Africa soon. As for 2018, we hope to increase LaLiga's presence through our various sports-education projects all across the continent” he added.



Also speaking about the initiative, Assistant coach of the Nigerian U-17 National team, Bunmi Haruna said “Last year’s edition of the coaching clinic was very impactful. We were exposed to the Spanish methodology for training players. The Spanish model is unique and very technical, and I am grateful to LaLiga & the NPFL for giving me the opportunity to better my skills as a coach”.

The NPFL-LaLiga partnership was signed in 2016 and has since recorded a number of exchange projects between the two leagues, including a tour of Spain by an NPFL All-Star team, the opening of the LaLiga Nigeria office in Abuja.

Ex-PSG Teen Star Ogbeche Back On The Goal Trail For Willem II




Willem II Nigerian goal machine, Bartholomew Ogbeche is back in the groove for the Tricolores in their 2-2 quarterfinal Holland Cup clash draw with Roda Kerkrade on Thursday evening.

The 33-year old pulled Willem level after 39 minutes of the game after Simon Gustafson had earlier shot their visitors into the lead from the spot.

Donis Avdijaj profited from an Adil Auassar's assist to power Roda back in front three minutes after the restart but Kostantinos Tsimikas made sure the the Tilburg-based side would take the game to extra time as the battle for the last four heated up.

After the ensuing 30 minutes which failed to produce any goals, William Ndenge's miss in the shootout for Roda proved enough as Ogbeche and his side advanced to the next round.

For the former PSG whizkid, the goal was his ninth in all competitions for the club this season, a tally which continued one of the most productive campaigns for the journey man striker.

Willem II would meet either of Feyenoord, AZ Alkmaar or FC Twente in the semifinals of the competition.

Sir did you really played the game cos i realised those who played the game always understand it better,this is the advantage Guardiola had over Mourinho.

A good coach who knows what he is doing will only address where he is having issues in the team.The only success story in our Argentina match is the discovery of Idowu and Uzoho meaning LB is fix and likely goalkeeper issue.

WILFRIED NDIDI: AN EFFECTIVE REPLACEMENT FOR NGOLO KANTE





Many questions were asked of then Premier League champions Leicester City as they allowed one of the stars of their historic title-winning season in Ngolo Kante to move to Chelsea for £32m. Although The Foxes managed to keep hold of other crucial players like Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, the Leicester midfield began to show signs of weakness as the foxes endured a mixed season as they finished 12th in the defense of their title.
Although it is seemingly impossible to replace a player of Kante’s calibre, Wilfred Ndidi was brought in during the January transfer window of 2017 – signing from Belgian side Genk for £17m and helped steady the Leicester ship as they quickly eased any fears of a relegation battle.
At more or less the halfway mark in his first full season with the club, it’s clear to see Ndidi’s influence has grown into an important part in how the Foxes line-up.

Ndidi started out his career as a centre back playing for Nigerain side Nath Boys, but quickly showed the kind of shooting and passing ability that, combined with his strength and size, would be the makings of a powerful defensive midfilder. The 17/18 season has proven to be a strong one for Ndidi, as he has completed the most tackles so far with 101 in total, the highest in all of Europes Top 5 leagues. The Nigerian international also averages an impressive 64% tackle success rate in the Premier League this season.

His defensive importance is further highlighted by the fact that he has blocked 11 goal attempts, intercepted 32 passes and completed 68 clearances. This allows players like Harry Maguire to push forward from the back and join the attack as they know they have suitable cover in Ndidi behind them. On average, the defensive midfielder has a hand in 5 defensive actions per game which ranks him 7th in Leicesters rank, only two behind Danny Simpson on 7.

Pass accuracy is an area where he could look to improve, as he is currently ranked 13th with an average pass succession rate of 76%. But more often than not if he misplaces a pass, there’s a strong chance he’ll win it back for his side. Having said that, he has managed to bag 3 assists and play 55 successful long balls in-behind so far this season which is just proof of Leicester’s fondness of keeping possession and playing tidy football if his overall pass succesion rank is outside the top 10. Part of Kante’s success was his partnership with Danny Drinkwater, a player Ndidi only played less than half a season with before he departed to join Kante at Chelsea. Prior to the unveiling of Adrian Silva, there were a few make-shift midfield parings with the likes of Matty James and Andy King joining Ndidi in the middle of the park but neither really struck a strong partnership with him. However, in his early days at the club Silva has impressed and following his Premier League debut against Huddersfield has a 100% success rate in both pass completion and successful tackles. He seems to add that much needed bit of flair to complement Ndidi’s powerhouse playing style, which may have the makings of a solid midfield partnership as Leicester look to carry on their good form which sees them currently lie in 7th position in the Premier League.

At the age of 21, Ndidi has bags of potential and playing at the highest level will only aid in his development which may see him go on to be just as crucial as Ngolo Kante was as Leicester City look to push as high up the Premier League table as they can.

Uduokhai is a world class prospect and will improve the Nigerian team. He can potentially even be a starter.
