I am amazed why and how 'you and gang' think 'me' is of more importance than the subject-matter ( which makes me think y'all lack proper understanding of the subject-matter).

My life has been at least 3 times better under Buhari, I can't say for others (I wish everyone the best though, going forward) -- it made me stronger, dig deeper for opportunities, and I came out stronger -- my businesses too.

I pay more people either as full staff or commission workers ( about 40 now, from less than 10 some 2-3 years back).

I spend more time in the country now than overseas -- things are looking brighter. The hardship of running my businesses from overseas and the fear of it collapsing under the mess created by Jonathan and further deepened in 2015/2016 by Buhari made me leave my comfort zone -- it was a risk, but it worked for me.

Would I, and some others have even made far more progress with more brilliant minds running the economy of this country? Absolutely yes!

And of course I do feel for those whose stories are different, hence the collective call for accountability and capable economic administration.

Find something doing, if you're doing something constructive right now, add extra stuffs doing to that. #workharder

My 2 cents.

We are selling more crude than Jonathan right now at higher prices ($65+) than Jonathan did towards the tail end of his administration($50 thereabout), yet the exchange rate is more than twice.

Of course products are landing now at N180/litre (so you subsidize or 'under recover' . . . 'yada yada yada'), 'cause the rates are at N360 to a dollar, at N180 to a dollar PMS will be at lower than N90/litre.

We have ultimately put ourselves in an economic catch 22, while economies of other oil countries are looking up and exchange rates improving, ours is doing the opposite simply because higher crude prices causes pains to our Naira via excess liquidity (courtesy of our economically faulty allocation disbursement implementation).

And most importantly, via the greed and cluelessness of past and present administrators (politicians and civil servants) of this country who's fault it is our refineries won't work at even a third of their capacity, hence, our need to always use the same hard earned Forex to source for refined petroleum products!

Imagine doing that if crude pushes north of $90/$100 per barrel with a confused economic administration seeing N360/$ as an achievement, same team that believes foreign reserves figures that doesn't translate to reduced inflation on the streets mean anything to an average Joe -- then, we will buy fuel at N250/litre!

Mr. Analyst, the Dangote refinery is coming on-stream latest next year, Godwilling with capacity to meet Nigeria's local demand.

We are not having the best situation but it is something we are ultimately getting out of soon. Find new things to whine about.

The comprehension capabilities/objectivity of some of you guys on NL is just amazing, to say the least.

I've written a few about Dangote's refinery and a few others more coming up (how that will be our game changer . . . I've also written about its cons as well, and those are in the air till we see how we navigate those), but I wonder how in your brilliant mind that justifies government's incompetence and cluelessness in handling basic monetary and fiscal policies?

I raised this very important issue of the high Naira to dollar exchange rate some weeks ago when a thread about our foreign reserve hitting $40billion made it to the front page. It is good to build up foreign reserve but it is not enough. Prices of basic commodities that sustain the masses went up astronomically since 2016 and they are still not down. The masses don't care about GDP or foreign reserve figures. What matters to them are the prices of commodities like petrol and basic foodstuffs. If CBN refuse to crash the exchange rate to around N250, prices of basic commodities will still remain very high and an increase in petroleum pump price will be inevitable if the price of crude oil continue to go up. And trust me, this government will not get away scot free with another petroleum price increase.

We now have more dollars in our foreign reserve and the price of crude oil is really looking up. CBN should use what we have to crash the exchange rate now before it is too late. That to me is the only viable option in the short term.

The government should also immediately privatise those moribund refineries now. They will never work if they remain under the control of government.
it is right now not as straight as one would want.it is now exactly what choice we make that will determine how we come out of this scenario.

sell off the refineries as you suggested and expect recovery after a year.Get new refinery close to source and get product supply in a year time.three crash the dollar exchange and start fighting all over again.three continue the subsidy and live with the pains on federation accounts and budget.

all in all it shows the impact of pmb inactions on taking sustainable economic decision

Thank you my brother.

Are you minding the subjective minded minions, they claim some people are 'zombies', while they are the 'real-one-track-minded-ninnies' who can't reason beyond their emotions.

They always think every opinion or article's end game is to crucify/exonerate one party/individual or the other. They can't even think through about how policies benefit them financially or socially.

Their bereftness of factors affecting issues won't make them keep quiet, but only help their cranium redirect to same ol' crap/craft of pettiness.

I wonder if Dangote buys crude from Nigeria in dollars, if he won't have to sell refined products at profitable prices, or maybe he would subsidize the cost for Nigeria or fill up our tanks for free.
And if our monetary/fiscal policies are not set right, and the Naira is sh!tty, won't that affect pump prices regardless?

Fuel is a dollar denominated commodity, and the value you pay for it will always be affected by the value of your local currency.

Atimes folks on here just make you feel you're having convos with toddlers or semi-literates.

don't mind him jare. He is still one of the few that thinks the government has anything tangible to offer.

He forgot to ask himself why despite the fact that dangote produces enough cement to satisfy west Africa, cement still became expensive immediately naira went to shiiit.

Won't dangote be selling what he is receiving when his refinery come on board.

I'm sure there will be a way out, FG might create a special window for fuel importers to access FX at a lower rate than the N360/$, maybe N280/N250. This step will obviously create a rumble but it's achievable if they wanted.
The damage an increase in fuel price and the expected salary increase will caused on the economy & ordinary Nigerians should better not be imagined.

You!

I don't want to rub your nose in it, with the classic "I told you so."

What I do find interesting tho' is that many of you repentant Sai Babarians are diasporan.

About Dangote's refinery, your analysis is right on point. But it really isn't necessary. Dangote manufactures cement in Nigeria, pays a 1% effective tax rate, generates his own power on the cheap, and yet we pay over 200% higher than the going international price.

What makes you guys think it'd be different with his refinery, regardless of how favorable it'd be for him. This guy has sold his noodles business, divested from his SA cement ambitions, closed his tomato factory, and more. He's going all in on the refinery. That'd be his new cash cow. And our wallets will pay the price.

And finally seunmsg agrees that we need to sell the refineries, after he previously believed that Buhari would end the wastage there.

The way I see it, Nigeria has wasted the last three years. It might turn out to be 8 years of wastage if Buhari continues.

But we'd bounce back. We always do.

I think the only positive from Buhari's government is that finally, no body would say there's a saint somewhere in the Nigerian polity that'd end corruption in one fell swoop. And we can all focus on making tangible improvements on the economy, business, and standard of living, while designing & refining processes that'd limit corruption as we age.

For starters, we need an accountability commission (like the US GAO). We need to enact law that'd make it compulsory for all ministries to provide monthly (or quarterly) public updates for all capital projects. Amongst others. We need to focus more on preventing corruption than punishing corruption (GEJ famous yam and goat theory). Because in a heavily corrupt, heavily divisive nation, with a very faulty political system; it'd take decades to build strong institutions and wean us off our "my thief is better than yours" mentality. While it'd take less time to design and implement systems like the IPPIS, TSA, et cetera.

And rather than rely on strong men to wield the big stick, we should encourage more public discourse and outcry when a detestable action occurs. Cases in point, the Maina debacle, Stella Oduah scandal et al...

That said, @seunmsg; I think it's commendable that the reserve is rising, even though Buhari has zero economic sense and it "seemingly" has no effect on the economy. If that's the only good thing the dullard can bequeath as he leaves Aso Rock, better.

And who would count the votes?

Yakubu!

That one like Maina, Kingibe, Dambazau, and the others (cabal affiliates) are the serial corrupt Old Guard that are always close to the seat of power. Most of them were in Yar'Adua's government, some even in GEJ's government. They follow a core Northern agenda, helped install Buhari, and if he re-contests, they'd help keep him there.

Votes may not count (at least, from all available information) in 2019, and there's nothing you can do about it. Better become a diasporan. So you can shuttle in and out with ease.
