Zik's resting place in a mess Pelu Awofeso (Just back from Onitsha) A weather-beaten signpost in the compound , Abandoned, overgrown with weeds AS Nigeria's preparations for the celebration of its 50 Independence Anniversary gathers momentum, National Daily has stumbled on a mess that tends to suggest that labour of one of its foremost heroes may have been in vain. The first indigenous President and one of the country's most-celebrated founding fathers, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (1904-1996) gave much to the country, but in death appears to have got too little for all the sacrifices. In most overseas countries, the monuments of their past leaders are prime tourist attractions and the state even earn revenue from revellers that troop there. But that cannot be said of the famed “Zik of Africa” as the Mausoleum being constructed over his burial site at his Onitsha home (Anambra State) remains uncompleted and abandoned 14 years after his death. Worse still , the exact location where his remains were interred is over grown with weeds. “As a son of this town and a title holder, I feel very sad about the situation,” said Kpajie Nnamdi Ibegbu (SAN) on Awka Road, along which Azikiwe's residence is located. “People should put pressure on the Federal Government to come and complete it.” In another eye sore, Zik's compound is dotted by a couple of one-storey buildings, all weather-beaten and vandalised, by a group of MASSSOB youths during a protest gone awry few years ago. Locals say that the late politician's family may have chosen not to effect the necessary repairs since the property has been taken over by the federal government. “If the government wants to complete the structure in one month it can,” Ibegbu adds, “ After doing that It should then go ahead to renovate the whole compound and let it be a tourist attraction so that people can visit during the 50th independence anniversary and afterwards.” The federal government has approved the sum of N6.6 billion for the different aspects of the celebration lA lone tractor by the uncompleted Mausoleum eading up to October 1, 2010, the date 50 years ago when Nigeria was freed from British rule. Millions of Naira has been allocated to activities like Callisthenics, military parade, state banquette and a long list of other items; but there is no indication that the Zik's Mausoleum has been taken into account. Ziks statue (right) inan overgrown garden “The Minister of Works was here to inspect the project just two weeks ago,” an insider told National Daily, just metres from a tractor and concrete mixer left behind by the project handlers. “What we hear is they would mobilise the contractors to come and finish the job.” The burial spots of both Chief Obafemi Awolowo (late Premier of the Western Region) and Alhaji Tafawa Balewa (Nigeria's first Prime Minister), the two other founding fathers of independent Nigeria, are interred in more ceremonial settings in Ogun and Bauchi States respectively, even if modestly so.

Zik of Africa, The Owelle of Onitsha does not deserve this sort of treatment. We are to spend almost #7 billion for our 50th Independence Anniversary yet those who fought for this Independence have been forgotten. If they had behaved like the leaders of today who only know and care for their pockets, there wouldnt have been any independence for us to celerate.

That is what happened when you are called a Nigerian hero. But the good thing is that, as a dead man, Zik could hadly noticed what is happening. It shows there is no such thing as after life. When you die, you just return to dust where we all comes from. period. 1 Like |

babapupa: Jobless Senile Yoruba fool . . . . . Your are acting as Fashola's nairaland spin doctor with the hope that he would offer you an agbero job. Every body knows that you Yorubas were the ones that invented the worst aspect of kidnapping in Nigeria. I mean: GBOMOGBOMO. It is a legacy passed down to you eediots by your forefathers who kidnapped, maimed and raped women of all ages. No thanks to Yoruba people for inventing GBOMOGBOMO, money ritual, juju ijebu ode, burying their fake Obas (deji of Akure) with 1 dozen human skulls, etc. |

seanet02: Probably you're damn right that that can't happen to Awolowo, the reason being that AWOLOWO is Yoruba icon, idol, leader and hero, and Azikiwe? he is a Nigerian hero and that is how a Nigerian hero is treated either dead or alive by Nigeria. Wait till the day the real Igbo leader will die, you will notice the difference. 2 Likes |

@ezeachi, so AWOLOWO is not a Nigerian hero? Then whose party moved the motion for independence? Who was the leader of the party at the time? Who created the largest industrial estate in the whole of sub sahara africa? Who develop the most literate region of Nigeria? Who initiated the free education that turns the southwest to a region where the federal government can not do without its educational inputs? Dear friend (and if you want enemy) dont compare the paper weight zik to AWOLOWO again, they are miles apart, its like comparing a dummy to a guru |

seanet02: Before you post something try to read what you are arguing against first before posting, because not only that your last posting supports y argument but put manure into it. Yes Awo did all those wonderful things you listed but where did him sight them, built them or effect them? All in Yoruba land and for Yoruba people. He made many Yorubas like Abiola, Christopher Kolade, Eleganza, Oshopey over night millionaires during his brief period as Gowon’s finance minister by his crafty and well thought out indigenization policy of foreign companies. And can you say the sae for Azikiwe? Not at all. Like you have said both men are miles apart in everything. So stop arguing against your own point. So he is a Yoruba hero, even a god. The last thing anyone can accuse Awolowo is that he is a Nigerian hero. Every Yoruba who is what today owes him a great gratitude. Forget about your story of who moves the motion for independent, even an ant then can do it at the time. 1 Like |

seanet02: Are we talking about resting place or a museum? As every person, even a dead mad person has a resting place. People like you argue with tribal made up might and caannot recognise even when someone is agreeing with you. Awolowo is Yoruba icon, while Akintola/Fajuyi are both Nigeria heroes. So you can't tell the different, irrespective of the colour white washed graves? 1 Like |

Eziachi: Awo probably took note of the saying that Charity begins at home. Awo was premier of Western region while Zik was a President Most Yoruba politicians of old who took care of their people the Yorubas are always remembered fondly. OBJ is probably similar to Zik who cared more about Nigeria than his Backyard. In OBJ's Local Govt, I doubt he can win any credible election while Awolowos name still pull crowds almost 25yrs after the sage died |
Re: Zik's Final Resting Place In Ruins by seanet02: 10:42pm On Jul 30, 2010 |
@metalgong, Then why did ziks own version of free education failed within 2yrs at least his party was in control of the east? Why did you ibos fail to maintain acb bank that was own by the east? Remember their is still WEMA bank, where is all the companies established by your satanic leader? Why is the east lagging behind in all ramifications or you have more industries in the east (all added together) than half of what is in LAGOS? The reason we were able to maintain this heritage is because AWOLOWO studied law and utilize his reasoning to educate his people on how to manage their economy while your foolish lord studied political follow follow with a minor in stupidity and refuse to educate you that taking to kidnapping and fake production of goods and services wont take you to developed manner. Me a militant? Calculate the number of kidnappers and militants in the east and west and divide each region with its population you will see that majority of you people are either kidnappers or oil militants. Sorry for the advice our hero have in the civil war that ruin you fools. |

~Bluetooth:Have you been actually reading previous postings before you posted this? Who was it that was calling Azikiwe a hero of Ndigbo that you are quoting? And why would Ojukwu be doing something about a museum Nigeria claimed to be building for their hero? And th last I checked, Ojukwu is neither the first son nor the last son of Azikiwe. This thread is about a mesuem the Nigerian state supposed to be building for the man that got them independent from Britain. It is not an abandoned Igbo initiated project, and if it was, you are entitled to dance to the market with it. 1 Like |
