Some quarters have been clamouring for state police but I think the demand is not actually for the benefit of common Nigeria. I have few reasons why the idea of state police should be aborted. 1. Lack of IGR: many state's internal generated revenue can barely sustain salary payment. 2. Conducive environment: some states lacks police infrastructures such as college, clinic and adequate resources to sustain the desired policing. 3. Owing of salary: not paying a policeman his salary as at when due can pose a security threat to civilians! U can submit ur idea |

Hotzone: But why are governors, especially Eastern ones always donating to Police? Or are you saying we need to go back to regional system that worked? 1 Like |

TheKingdom:Donating funds or manpower? Generally, our police should be supported like in Lagos where State and firms support and encourage Police both in funds and equipment which boost the morale of the policeman |

Counter argurments 1. Raise IGR no excuses. 2. You don't need college you need police academy. We are the federal police getting treated if states don't have clinics. 3. If they aren't paid they will strike. Every government that ever existed knows not to mess with pay of pay of essential services. I made a whole thread on how decentralised police force could work. Every state can figure out how they want to run theirs. These sort of issues should be written in stone in constitution. Summary: elect police chief to run police force as first option. Second option have local government chairman or commitee elect local government chairmam. Local government autonomy is required. You can choose wheather or not to have state police. The federal police can exist under some different specialised role. The legislative branch must have ability to remove chief/ Sheriff via impeachment. Lastly prison will also need to be decentralised. 4 Likes |

Blue3k:Really like ur comment but talking about college, I think u got it wrong. Without college, how can there be training and retraining. We need adequate college unlike what we have here such as in Ikeja, Oji where structures are like caves (death trap)! |

Hotzone: You're right college education should be a requirement to join police force. Where I live in Texas all you need is an associate degree (2yr). I would also like psychological test too many idiots join federal police force. I'm haven't researched Nigerian colleges so I don't know how to fix them. All the other things will be learned in the academy. |

Blue3k:Psychological test is good but there are underlying factors which might make it unnecessary efforts such as welfare, under payment and lack of refreshment causes. Officers with challenges whether family pressure or financial challenges should be internally managed to avoid eacalating to become psychology problem and as such, become unbalance for such individual to bear arms |

Hotzone: What should a policemen wage be? The refreshment courses can be managed internally. The rest I don't know how to help them in Nigeria. |

All over the World, effective policing comes about through good community effort. What is it having a Fulani police boss in say Benin city, while the officer neither understands, nor speaks the local language. A good police man/woman should be 100% conversant with the environment in terms of culture, language, and even body languages in order to solve crimes. If you hand over policing to local people in my town, they will tell you everything you need to know about policing with 1 hr! I mean, who is new to the town, who stole another's chicken, or insulted an elder. If you buy a new car without justifying the means, forget about it, within 10 minutes you'll be in police custody. That's why it works well in other places of the World, but in Nigeria were you have southern politicians profess their love for murderous Fulani herdsmen who are killing their own citizens, because they want to be in Buhari's good books, nobody will tell you the truth. 2 Likes |

Re: Disadvantages Of State Police by Ovamboland(m): 7:40am On Feb 11, 2018 |
paragon40: Are they not been misused at the federal level already? They are also human at FG level. If that is your argument safe guards like electing the police head and community chiefs, making it impossible for the governor to dismiss the police head alone will reduce tendency of misuse. And we still have the advantage of community policing using personnel with local knowledge and will not be transferred to another state anyhow. 1 Like |

Blue3k: All the states need not established police college or academy at the same time, the FG can continue to run it's police colleges and the state can sponsor candidates or individuals can attend to obtain a degree. If they are comfortable with the course content and teaching environment. Otherwise buoyant states like Lagos can start their own police academy and other states who find value in the school can send their cadets there. 2 Likes |

The police is independent of state. The police has to sack people not from their state. |

Hotzone:Good points, however the real bane is that due to our diverse culture and religous acclination as a people, upon the introduction of state police, you can't get justice anywhere. We are quick to draw parallel from what is obtainable in the USA & UK ,praising them for the success of state police, forgetting that they are a mono linguist nation and have moved far far away from religious divides that enabled state policing to thrive. For instance ,let's take this scenario, a yourba man buys a land in Kano and later there is an encroachment by a Hausa man on his property which leads to a dispute ,the case is reported to the police (state police) ,the Hausa man arrives the station and in one way or the other he is related either by bloodline or he is from the same village with state police I.P.O or the D.P.O(obivously 99% of recruitment into the state police will be indigenes from that particular state) and they begin to chant in their local dialect, do you think the Yoruba man will ever get justice as a complainant? Situations like this will be a re-occuring decimal all around the country . 1 Like |
